Filmmaking Deep Dive: Building a Camera

Jonathan and Alan take a field trip to visit Philip at Enigma 3 to "play" with expensive camera equipment. Enjoy Jonathan's general ineptitude while learning how to build a camera that you would use to shoot movie films!

Jono reminds me of me when my husband and I built our gaming computers together. I was so done by the end of the process that I started making all kinds of stupid puns and jokes. Bless those with enough patience to work with those of us who are not technically savvy 😂.

Dream job, since I was like 5.

Ooh, good question. I'm not totally sure. I'll have to think about that, and talk to some crew folks.

Alan Seawright

What’s the most complex thing you can build camera wise that’s not specialist or niche?

Pam Jackson

I think we might have Jono build a camera dolly next time. They're CRAZY complicated (if you're using a high-end one) but super-powerful.

Alan Seawright

Neat!

This was fascinating! Thank you for the Deep Dive ❤

You may never know! Maybe one day you’ll get a group gift from some people who knows you’ve dreamt of getting this for yourself, or give you an opportunity to “rent to own”! Dont sell yourself short :) I wish you luck in having this dream of yours come true one day

Hikari Yamato

Thank you for teaching us about cameras! That was so cool

All I can think while watching this is how tired we were. This was the last thing we shot during a shoot week.

Thank you for these extra tidbits! So much more to explore on here that I didn't know about! :D

RED does sell kits, like the RED Raven, which comes with everything you need minus the lenses, but generally you buy the specific components that you need for your job. I've been dreaming of owning a RED camera for years, but in lieu of a lottery win or selling an organ, it's likely to stay a dream. Haha!

Oh my goodness, thank you for showing me just how intense cameras and their assembly are. I genuinely had no idea. And kudos to Jono for being game! And uh... I would now like pizza.

This was so fun to watch! Thank you for the fun content

Came for the deep dive. Stayed for the torture. Also learned some things. Thanks :)

Cameras are so fascinatingly technologically sophisticated and sensitive! I always thought that the main camera body comes already pre-assembled with the knobs, and the other “external” connectors were just accessories. I never knew how intricate and similar to Lego a professional film camera can get. Thanks to the crew, guests, and Enigma 3 for allowing us to get a glimpse into the vast industry that is filmmaking

Hikari Yamato

After watching this I finally understand why movie cameras are so expensive
