June Grab Bag of Mystery: Director's Cut from the Archives - ZOOTOPIA

Each month, you get a random piece of exclusive bonus content as a thank you for supporting us on Patreon. June's Grab Bag of Mystery perk is a new thing!! Well, an old thing that's a new thing! Some episodes are too old to have director's cuts... until now. Enjoy this director's cut from the archives of "Therapist Reacts to Implicit Bias in ZOOTOPIA," originally released on YouTube on June 30, 2020.

P.S. Because a director's cut is being released as a Grab Bag, Sidekicks get their first taste of the DCs. Yay! Tell us what you think of it in the comments below!

June Grab Bag of Mystery: Director's Cut from the Archives - ZOOTOPIA

Comments

What is that project they worked on, that they don't think is okay anymore and wanted to make an episode about?

Imogen Heiden

I really loved this episode!! Brand new patron (ever!! I made a patreon just so i could support you guys), so this was my first directors cut and I loved it. What a fascinating, deep, thought-provoking conversation. The amount of vulnerability it takes to openly admit to your implicit bias is really something, so kudos to you Jono. Also a conversation that isn't had nearly often enough is the implicit bias within minorities themselves, especially against other minorities. I'm half Hispanic and the amount of times my mother and everyone from that side of the family will be outright racist, especially with the implicit bias, saying a lot of the things Jono's former friend said (eg. my mom says she will only allow a Vietnamese person to do her nails) is just baffling. Assuming it's just a white issue is ignoring the societal issue as a whole. Stereotypes exist everywhere. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Lovely episode, I enjoyed it a lot.

Imo white privilage isn't quite what people make it out to be. On the one hand, some people overcompensate and hire way too far over based on dei, and then again, white privilege definitely exists. I feel like we're caught in a false dichotomy where either white privilege exists or it doesn't, and we make that a defining feature between republican and democratic, and that just isn't true.

I love this movie - not because of its allegory about racism though. I do wonder if predators Vs prey is a useful analogy for explaining racism. I think this film was in part inspired by a manga called Beastars which is a murder mystery set in a high school where the population is comprised of humanoid animals. The dynamic of predator Vs prey is a dominant theme especially as predators pose a serious threat to smaller animals. The way this films tries to present the dynamic is that it's racist to be wary of a predator because those predatory instincts have gone. However, being wary of a predator isn't racism - it is rooted in the history of that world. Therefore, being wary is not racism, it is prejudice. Prejudice is not great but it is not the same as racism. And I now realize that is what this film addresses - prejudice not racism.

I honestly can't think of anything specific! But hey, I'm an aspiring filmmaker. Maybe I need to make one!!

I absolutely love this episode and am so happy to have this extended DC version! I agree with all that you say on implicit, explicit, and confirmation biases and love your insights and advice on how to address biases of our own. Fantastic!! One moment in the video I want to note: When you guys are talking about the false narrative or bias which attributes violence and crime to race rather than socioeconomic status (spot on!!), Alan uses the phrase, "Frickin' Karens." I first remember hearing people start the name 'Karen' to imply someone who was overly difficult, racist, entitled, or unintelligent in 2018-2020, around the time of the pandemic (though it could have originated longer ago.) I, as I'm sure many people do, know a couple of kind, mindful, smart women who are named Karen. And I've often wondered what it must feel like to have your given name currently used in popular culture as a slur. What is it like to have your name become a derogatory term? And how does the use of their name in this way shape how we react or treat the next person we meet named Karen? I'm sure Alan meant no harm or insult in his comment toward "actual" Karens; I speak more to our cultural use of 'Karen' as pejorative slang, than calling out Alan individually. Just some food for thought in the vein of biases.

I loved reading this comment. Thank you so much!

Thank you for this.

Jono here. I'd love to address this. Alan and I are both men of faith with disdain for judgmental religionists. We'd need just the right movie, because we A) don't want to push our beliefs on people B) don't want to be insensitive to people of faith C) don't want to be insensitive to people who are not religious. Frollo in Hunchback was a perfect fit to finally address spiritual abuse, because he's countered by the kind bishop who gives Esmerelda sanctuary. Any ideas for a good film along the lines you're thinking?

I always loved this video! I have sent it to friends who struggled to understand that racism comes in many forms, not just burning crosses. I really admire the accountability of your own implicit bias Jonathan. Its gives me alot of hope to see such honesty, as a person of African decent I too need to address my own implicit biases! Fantastic video guys

Watching the old stuff like this really drives home how much better you've gotten at this. :-) Way more time talking about America, fairly little about the movie itself. Still enjoyed it though. What you didn't touch on, and what really made Zootopia a great movie for me, is the reversal. Through the first 2 acts, the story is mainly presented as Judy overcoming anti-bunny bias and having to prove herself. Her own bias is there, but ti's a lot more subtle. Then at the press conference you get hit with her bias square in the face at the same time she is, and the 3rd act is her coming to terms with it and trying to make things right. Its that "you can be discriminated against and still have unwanted biases of your own at the same time" factor that really makes the movie.

Indeed but I was wanting to see Twilight and New Moon in that regard lol

zachary slatton

Eclipse and Breaking dawn have at least and you can find them from the director's cut collection.

Seldanz_

Do the Twilight movies have director cuts? Really hoping those see the light of day lol

zachary slatton

Thanks for your support!!

Caressa Taylor

i followed you guys since day one, yours was the first youtube channel i ever subscribed - you helped me a lot through difficult times, and i´m looking forward to see the older episodes in a shining new garment - ah... directors cut

zeklama

I wish I could share this with more people. It's enlightening.

Thank you so much for going into the archives and bringing us this! I love hearing your expanded thoughts and now have more things to self-examine 😊

Another reason why people of color don't "call" you on your behavior is we're tired. It's like having to provide free unsolicited therapy to anyone who hurts you. Jono, you know how well therapy the patient doesn't want or think they need goes. We already have to live our lives like everyone, endure discrimination and oppression, psych ourselves to deal with it,, and now we're offered job #4, teach the unaware privileged. Sometimes we just sigh, endure, and hope the next person they hurt has the time, will, and energy to be the teacher/unsolicited therapist.

Deb

Yay! Thank you for extra Zootopia content! Loved doing a rewatch of this.

Emily Snell-Salvaggio

Ahh thank you! It was a lot of things to be honest. I had been struggling to go to church for quite a while after suffering a lot of religious abuse for years. One of my best friends encouraged me to go to a church completely different from what I grew up in to try to help me separate Jesus from cruel people who claim to reflect Him. After some time to reflect, conversations with some people from just such a church, and an invitation to attend with them, I started going and it was exactly what I needed. God is using some incredible people to heal my heart

Kate Larson

They talked about it a little bit in their episode on Frollo. Great episode.

Gabe Vermund

Bring on the Serenity director's cuts!

Gabe Vermund

I love director's cuts so much. This was a treat. ❤️

I worked with learning disabled children. One of the kids was black. I talked to all of my kids to get to know them. One day as we were working he asked how old he had to be to go to juvie. Until that day I hadn't understood what it meant to be a black child in today's society. We talked about it of course but white privilege really struck me at that point.

Linda Herbert

I don't remember the whole quote, but there's a concept I heard similar to your race analogy. It's not about making good choices, it's about whether you've been given good choices. If you don't have good choices to choose from you can't get to the same places as someone who was given those options... 🤷‍♀️ Poorly explained by me. But it makes sense in my head.

WhoDat

This was great! Loved hearing all the extra conversation on implicit and explicit bias. I'm sure it took a bit of work to go back and patch this together from older footage, so thank you guys for doing so!

SaucyJTD

I always hate it when people try to discredit the themes of zootopia without realizing the bigger picture of what it represent/trying to tell. You're analysis of the film is probably my favorite of what you guys said!

allell

Can I ask the impetus for your switch? Also, hello, complete stranger, I'm proud of you for following your heart so bravely! 🥰

Smidge

I would disagree with you and say that you do need to be respected. You deserve it because you are a human being and you are trying to better yourself. I love this episode thank you.

Brenda Moctezuma

Things are so different now! What a blast from the past! I think I found this page in June or July 2020. I love this movie so much and love the message it sends

Holly✌️

My extremely religious dad and relatives have tried to say that we know we're in the end times because the world is getting so much worse. (I know I know.) And I just pointed out that it's been really easy to be a white man in America for a long time. Of course you don't see faults that have been around forever. That also brings up a point, have you ever considered addressing religious prejudice? Like not just between religions but denominations. Like my uncle and aunt basically assume that anyone who is from a different denomination isn't really a Christian. Or at least isn't really worshiping God. So let's just say they aren't going to be thrilled when they find out that I switched denominations.

Kate Larson

I'll hop right on it! 🐰

Smidge

Oh my gosh!! A director’s cut for Zootopia?? What a day, what a lovely day!! (Sorry, wrong movie. But I’m excited!!)
