Ashes to Ashes Midnight Thoughts 2: Setbacks

Today was a particularly hard day.

Not posting this to garner sympathy, but just to show the ugly realities of what it's actually like to try to make a film, short or otherwise. Some days are up, and some days are down. Today was down.

Leave a comment if you'd like me to continue this (very lo-fi) series, or just get after making the movie?

Ashes to Ashes Midnight Thoughts 2: Setbacks

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I would like see more videos like this but only if it doesn't stress you out even further. Good luck with this project 🍀

I’m late to the game, but I wanted to say thank you for sharing this experience with us. As others have said, a big part of the reason we signed up was to see how things are made and this is the reality of it. I’m glad that you were brave enough to be vulnerable and honest, because you have an amazing team and we support you ❤️

“There is just news, there is no good or bad.” - Oogway We’re here through thick and thin. I believe we all appreciate how open you are with this process. Like others said, seeing this makes us appreciate movies this much more! Good luck, no matter what happens. You’ll always have my support because I know genuinely, you care so much about this and whatever you decide to do, I know you made a decision with passion and the love of being a film maker.

😖 ugghhhh Unknowns are always the absolute WORST! uugghhh 😖 Having no clear ‘right’ answer is a nightmare for my problem-solving-addicted brain. I hate seeing the stress. It truly pains me. As a semi-still-creative person I’m realistic that that pressure of squeezing a creative thing through the narrow walls of numbers and dates and reality sure does exist. And it can be soul-crushing. I’m trying to visualize the budget and time restraints as … like a crucible that will somehow force the last microscopic bits of muck out of this valuable thing you have created … making it somehow brighter. … It may not! 🙃But that doesn’t reflect on the value of the thing you have NOR the amazing work, time, sweat, and tears you put into it. (… But I *am* sticking with the crucible view for now and you can’t stop me ☺️) Regardless of any outcomes, I absolutely love the peeks inside with these updates. I feel more connected to ‘where the rubber meets the road’, getting to see these, even if there are times where the ‘rubber’ is flat, the spare is flat, and it’s a half mile back to the nearest station. 🤍 The journey is 1000x worth it! And, even project-wise, if I had the choice to be on a road that was clear sailing or in a patchy one with y’all driving, I’d absolutely pick this one! Godspeed. And wishing you rest and clarity. (And a minimum of ceiling-starting, when trying to rest 😌 🫂) Grateful for and just bafflingly impressed with all you do.

Hang in there, Alan and crew, we believe in you or we wouldn't be here. I don't know spit about film making but have been involved in multiple biotech startups so I know a bit about using what you got and making the money stretch where you can. Echoing the others' (much betterly(?) phrased) well wishes, encouragements and appreciation in all you do. Where possible, please do continue the video sharing. The peek behind the curtain is fascinating. And, as Zefram Cochrane would say, I love a good peep show. 😉

Gandalf's wizard senses were tingling. His human needed him! Again, a wizard arrives precisely when he means to.

Seeing the "ugly" side of film making is a good learning experience and makes me appreciate the end results even more. I appreciate the above and beyond you and the team are going for us and will watch all you post about the parts we don't normally see. I work in a large county hospital and am used to high stress. Movies and gaming have always been my escape and seeing the huge stress that my joy creates in those creatives is eye opening and humbling. I really appreciate this incite you have gifted.

Can’t say it better than TPK or Saucy. 💙💙 It’s never easy. Being creative and tying in the technicalities to bring a vision to life is never easy, and sometimes the version that makes it to reality isn’t the same as the vision you had in your head. Thank you for making this video—I love the honesty. As long as it’s feasible to keep making them, I love these little steps in the journey. Won’t they make the end product, whatever it may be, all the more meaningful…?

I’m 100% with Saucy. They’re pretty smart I think. Waiting is a risk. Going forward is a risk. There’s no right answer. And no matter the answer decided upon, new risks will come up. I’m a project manager by trade. Risks, money, time, materials that’s my life every day and I get it. Every decision, every day creates a whole new slew of problems to be dealt with, new decisions to make. It’s a vicious cycle. But, it’s just like Matt Damon’s character said in the Martian, “You solve one problem... and you solve the next one... and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home.” Only in this instance, you get to make a short film. No problem exists without a solution. Sometimes you just gotta get real creative. You have a huge support group of people who believe in you. You can do the thing.

Talk about being able to feel someone else's anxiety through a screen. Even without the music, I would have felt that. I'm going to offer my inputs and potential solutions in my next paragraph. Feel free to ignore them if you're not looking for that, and jump to my third paragraph instead. Okay, so. Keep talking it through with your team. Personally, I am totally fine if we need to wait longer for everything to really start. I know time is just as much the enemy as money, yes, especially since this is not the only project you have going on at the moment and weather is a concern, I'm sure. However, I would love for you to get the quality that you're dreaming of out of this since you have expressed multiple times over the years that the studio side of the house is your dream. Plus, if we waited a month or more, that could open the opportunity to raise the money through Kickstarter or whatever website would work best. You guys have a fairly steady community now, so it could be a practical way to raise more money to make this project happen. I'm just a random internet pleb, though, so I may be way off base here 🤷‍♀️. Thank you for sharing these videos with us, and I would love if you continue to do so. At the same time, I would love for you to be able to get the rest you need, so I certainly won't be constantly expecting these videos. Take the time you need, breathe, and work through it with your team and loved ones. It'll be figured out. Sending all the love and support I can ❤️.

SaucyJTD

Please continue these videos. I hope you get this figured out and can start filming.

Please continue. Big Hugs!
