August Grab Bag of Mystery: Dream Casting Harry Potter

Comments

Poor Kitt Harrington passed over for Potter again 😞

Lenna

Dark horse pick for Lupin here: Thomas Brodie-Sangster. I KNOW, I KNOW, he’s still the kid from Nanny McPhee and Love, Actually for a lot of people, but by the time they’d be casting Lupin, he’d be over 40. Check out pictures of him with facial hair, add some scars and I think he’s got the look down. Plus I feel like he nicely treads the line between cool young teacher and proper British gentleman enough to differentiate him from Sirius. If not, Andrew Garfield works.

Luke

Michelle Gomez as McGonagall!!!

Luke

Or Dev Patel as Lupin!

Luke

Capaldi is my Dumbledore!!! His Doctor shows so much of what Dumbledore needs. That wacky mischeviousness with that kind heart at his core. Stephen Fry is my Slughorn!

Luke

I want David Tennant as Sir Cadogan! (deep cut)

Luke

Interesting, considering Andrew Garfield’s a popular choice for Lupin (the role I’d probably prefer him in). He’s my favorite actor of all time tho, so let’s please just get him in there somewhere

Luke

Nick Frost is my choice for Hagrid too!!! Simon Pegg as Dumbledore is wild tho😭 I want Simon Pegg as Peeves and Peter Capaldi as Dumbledore!!

Luke

Love this!!! I’ve been rereading the books with the new series in mind, outlining how I think they should divide up the episodes and making notes on casting. I actually really love Brett Goldstein as Sirius, which is funny because I’d considered him as Snape, but I honestly think I might like this more! I’ve just been dream casting as many Ted Lasso and Doctor Who actors as I can😂 (Nick Mohammed as Peter Pettigrew, anyone?)

Luke

Idris Elba could be Kingsley Shacklebolt.

Hannah Vaughn

Mad Mikelson would play such an amazing Lucius Malfoy tho...

Megha Suresh

Oh, and for Peter Pettigrew, Toby Jones would be BANG ON. Just awesomeness.

Megha Suresh

For Sirius, I think the best option would be Andrew Garfield. Sirius becomes cynical and miserable only in Azkaban, but is otherwise portrayed as a handsome, loveable goof who has an amazing dynamic with James. Andrew Garfield is exactly that. BINGO.

Megha Suresh

Toby Stephens would make a good Sirius as well - definitely pulls off the rage/paternal combination. And he’s Maggie Smith’s son to boot

Sam Johnson

Oh my goodness, Noel Fielding as Filch is genius! 😂 Trying to think of a good spot for Idris Elba... hmm. Might have to think about that a bit and come back to it, because he's incredible.

Cinema Therapy

I ADORE Davide Tennant! But he was Barty Crouch Jr. in the movies, and I was trying to avoid re-casting people from the originals. That said, he could do something very interesting with Voldemort. Or any number of other characters. Because he is amazing! -- Megan

Cinema Therapy

waw Megan is really talented at this game. I love the choices she made. Adam Driver as Snape and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are my favorite. I would add Oscar Isaac as Sirius Black.

Meilin

The funniest thing about these dream castings are Allan's reactions.

Heather George

Very good casting! Can we somehow make room for Idris Elba? And somehow I’m feeling Noel Fielding as Filch, but I think that might just be because you mentioned the IT Crowd 😂 He’d probably have more fun as Peeves though.

Sara Wagiström

Not HP, but dream casting related: My perfect Pride and Prejudice (2005) dream casting for Mr Bennet (originally played by Donald Sutherland) is none other than our dear Alan Seawright. I think it’s because of my favourite scene from the movie at the end when he gives his blessing to Elizabeth and Darcy and cries happy tears. 🥲❤️

Ana Bulat

Where is David Tennant is all this? He would be great as Voldemort.

Nancyjane Bailey

Yay, Megan! More Megan. More David. Maybe a grab bag of mystery with Megan AND David. 🤯 I now realize how greedy this sounds. 😄😁

Elizabeth

My brother in Curze, that is EXACTLY the role I was thinking of.

beckerboopin

Yesssss! In my opinion, his performance in V for Vendetta showcases his range from cheeky to deathly serious so well

Konrad Curze

Douglas Hodge as Aberforth Dumbledore 😭

Melissa

100% agree on Jude Law! He is a wonderful Dumbledore

Kate Ackerley

David at the end. xD Got me good. I started giggling. I agree with Megan’s choices. 💙💙

IndyDraws

Taylor Swift as Rita Skeeter haha 😜

Ana Bulat

Coming back to say that Robert Carlisle would make an astonishing Olivander!

Moon7Willow

Thanks Alan and Megan for responding. I was just making suggestions. I like the Bridgeston vibe with the multi-racial casting. One of my theatre mentors said, “Casting is half the battle. If you have a good script and cast that makes the production that much easier.” But Warner Brothers might not want to do that. 🤔

Lucinda Sage-Midgorden

THANDIE NEWTON FOR TRELAWNEY! - Jono

Cinema Therapy

Don't know if he would do it, but it would be PERFECT.

Cinema Therapy

Nicholas Hoult as Lupin could be amazing! And Michael Sheen for everything, always.

Cinema Therapy

Henry Golding as Lockhart?? (he's definitely charming enough!) Chiwetel Ejiofor as Madeye could be really fun. Or maybe Barty Crouch Sr? Gugu Mbatha Raw I could potentially see as Madam Hooch or Madam Pomfrey - no-nonsense, highly competent, but still kind. I'm not as familiar with Thandiwe Newton, so I'd have to think about that a bit... - Megan

Cinema Therapy

Richard Ayoade for Dumbledore, if you please! And Michael Sheen for Fudge is *inspired!* -alan

Cinema Therapy

Honestly, all 4 should be in it. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mad-Eye Moody could be a TON of fun. Thandiwe Newton as Rita Skeeter? I'm not as good at this as Megan is. -alan

Cinema Therapy

Well, that's true. I didn't think of that. I might be naiivi but somehow I believe that it's possible for people to read books without engagin very much with the author. Also I personally disagree strongly with Rowlings wiews on things but still think that Harry Potter is one of the greatest fantacy crearions. These aren't mutually exclusive things.

Seldanz_

My point isn't that watching the video is somehow equal to supporting Rowling, but that keeping her work popular continues to amplify her voice. If Harry Potter weren't still talked about, Rowling wouldn't be famous enough for people to care what she has to say.

tiassa

So many of us agree to Adam Driver as Snape. At this point, if they don’t cast him, it’ll feel deliberate. 😂

GrangerDanger

Okay, but this is basically Megan and Alan playing Megan's favourite game Alan getting excited about how fast she is able to come up with good actors/actresses for the roles and Jono also throwing succestions into the mix. It's not like Megan is actually casting anyone and J.K.Rowling isn't getting a penny from this. I'm not looking to argue. You don't have to watch this video. I'm just offering my wiew of how watching this video is not suppoeting Rowlings wiews even if reading her books or watching the movies would be which I don't think it is.

Seldanz_

I honestly think he would make an excellent Rufus Scrimgeour, but if you listened to the autobooks, he's SO GOOD at Kreature.

Holly✌️

Ok I was prepared to be utterly offended that no one nominated Stephen Fry for anything, but this is an inspired choice

LynnCaster

Hear me out: Aubrey Plaza for Umbridge. Umbridge is like mid thirties in the books, and Plaza is 40. While it is pretty far from her normal typecast, I think she would have a ton of fun in the role, as well as add depth to the very realistic threat that Umbridge imposes on the children.

tres 🫶🏻

In response to more actors of color, is there a role for Chiwetel Ejiofor? I love him! Also Thandiwe Newton, Guru Mbatha Raw or Henry Golding? I do like your picks though.

Lucinda Sage-Midgorden

I feel we are missing an opportunity with Lupin, and I humbly nominate Nicholas Hoult. He could be bumbling and awkward, but with those shimmery, wolfy eyes. Plus, more of a charismatic pull between him and Florence Pugh as Tonks. Matt Smith as Voldemort, because we know he can pull off a terrifying megalomaniac. Michael Sheen for Cornelius Fudge. Also, MORE. PEOPLE. OF. COLOR. PLEASE!! Perhaps Sophie Okonedo as Professor McGonagall, or Madam Hooch. Ncuti Gatwa as Sirius Black, for that warmth & mischievous spirit. Richard Ayoade for Professor Quirrell.

Manic Thiccsy Dream Girl

I agree that she cannot and will not ever influence me to believe in or support her hateful viewpoints. However, said viewpoints only have a platform because her work is popular enough that people pay attention to her, so I personally choose not to give her that attention or amplify her relevance in popular culture. (This is not intended as a criticism toward CT or anyone else who still engages with Harry Potter, because how someone else chooses to engage with fiction that has significance in their life/heart is up to them, it's simply how I feel about it and why I won't be watching the video.)

tiassa

Hey! That's awesome!

Cinema Therapy

You've got some great ideas in here!! Rowan Atkinson as Peeves would be incredible. So many phenomenal actors, where to put them all??

Cinema Therapy

I'd really like Charles Dance either as Voldemort or as Dumbledore. He's obviously great at evil manipulators (and he might have a bit less maniac and more manipulative approach to voldemort in later books) but I'd also really like him once as really kind character, it could either be really bad or it could be absolutely briliant to have him play Dumbledore. Even Tywin and Vetinari had some pretty good guy moments though they were still bit edgy for Dumbledore. Also what about Cumberbatch as voldemort? Hidleston should also get some role. Capaldi could be cool Dumbledore. Rowan Atkinson as Peeves. Maybe Jude Law could play even old Dumbledore he was great as young version. Ben Kingsley would be great Dumbledore. Or Patrick Stewart he would have hair for once :D Stephen Fry would be also great Dumbledore if he was a bit thinner, but maybe some digital help?

BlackAdder

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Dumbledore and Hagrid? Yes please!

Beutimus

Someone should AI generate the images of all the casting and share.

Kate Ackerley

Great choices!! I don't really see Rupert Grint being the Lupin for Florence Pugh's Tonks... Ben Barnes or Jamie Campbell Bower seem better suited for that. I love Benedict Cumberbatch as Quirrell, however I was just thinking of the book's description of Dumbledore's eyes as "piercing blue".... he might make a great Dumbledore.

Kate Ackerley

Agreed! After watching him in Split I fully understood what one of my psych teacher's used to say, that good actors sometimes border in psychosis.... I never knew if she meant it as a joke or not... but seriously, James McAvoy could play Umbridge, Harry, Hermione or bartender Tom if he wanted to.

Kate Ackerley

If you watch the mini series Children of Dune, MacAvoy definitely shows shades of that lazy exultation!

Moon7Willow

Dev Patel as Sirius would be serious.

Alan Seawright

Ooh, that’s good! I’d thought about John Boyega, but Kaluuya can bring the menace too.

Alan Seawright

We don’t need her permission! Swap away!!!

Alan Seawright

Well, I choose not to believe that. She can’t tell me what to believe or support.

Alan Seawright

Yaaaaaaaaaay!!! The first Mistborn trilogy is in my top 10 favorite books of all time!

SaucyJTD

I love these dream casting videos!! And the last one got me to read Mistborn - loved it!!!

Rachel Jones

He's so good!!

Cinema Therapy

I squealed with glee with your pick for Dumbledore and Hagrid! Also, Stephen Fry as Kreature?

Holly✌️

Ah! Whoops musta missed it! I think he'd be a fantastic Dumbledore, though. He's got that soft and nurturing side down pat, but it always feels like there's a secret there somewhere, ya know? Not to mention he can flip to stone-cold serious at the drop of a hat too.

beckerboopin

Oh my goodness, yes, please!

Desireé (Speak91)

I feel like he would be able to capture the regality that Voldemort had in the books, cause he's described in his first true scene in Goblet of Fire as having a sort of lazy exultantness in how he carried himself and spoke, and no shade to Ralph Fiennes, his performance was really good, but I didn't really get the same feel as book Voldemort tbh

Ravenclaw 14

Given that JK Rowling has stated multiple times that she believes that people continuing to support her work means that they also support her transphobic ideals, I prefer not to have conversations about Harry Potter, no matter how much the books meant to me in the past.

tiassa

Well Cate Blanchett would be good for McGonagall, because I don't think she was very old in the books, she's described as having black hair after all

Ravenclaw 14

Or Tom Hiddleston as every character! He's amazing. 😁

Cinema Therapy

There was a little note on screen toward the end that Stephen Fry would be a great option for Dumbledore! (we forgot to mention it while we were filming)

Cinema Therapy

His role in Split has convinced me that James McAvoy is actually just a walking mimic roaming the earth. That man has so much range that I'm not even sure he knows there's supposed to be a limit lol.

SaucyJTD

Okay but we GOTTA have Stephen Fry in there somewhere.

beckerboopin

Honestly, for as good of a performance as he would put in, I wasn’t convinced on the look of James McAvoy as Lucius until I imagined him playing Lucius opposite of Michael Fassbender playing Voldemort. As soon as that was in my head, I was completely on board.

Catherine Ginn

Sally Hawkins is definitely a good call for Trelawney, but I can’t help but think that Maya Hawk would be awesome - if only she were older.

Catherine Ginn

Such a great dream cast. Hope some executives are watching.

McLovinPopeIII

James McAvoy playing Voldemort would be delightfully ironic given his role as a young Professor X.

Desireé (Speak91)

I love Ben Wishaw, he is so darn good. I could truly see him as either Sirius or Snape actually (since Driver is american :P)

Frida

That was perfect. I would love to have Tom Hiddleston as Remus though.

Loki Dokey

If Ms. Rowling were ok with genderswapping a character or two, Freddie Highmore would be stunning as Trelawney.

Moon7Willow

Rhys Ifans could do Pettigrew!

Frida

Agreed! This could be a whole subcategory lol.

SaucyJTD

Please do more of these dream cast videos!

Tiffany

I've always read Kingsley Shacklebolt as older, maybe Daniel Kaluuya. 🤔

Moon7Willow

I thought of Tilda to, but for Umbridge! She has a knack for making menacing appearenses

Frida

Ooh, Gwendoline Christie would also be fantastic! And I'm kind of loving the idea of Benedict Cumberbatch as Quirrell.

Cinema Therapy

Oh yes, Benedict definitely has the range to play either part!

Moon7Willow

Gwendoline Christie would rock the hell out of Madame Maxime! That was my suggestion, too ❤️. I love Benedict Cumberbatch, but I think it would actually be fun if he played Quirrell! He could easily do Snape or Voldemort, too, though those would be on the more darker side of his personality 😊.

SaucyJTD

Alr, it is kinda of a stupid joke, but that was my honest reaction right there hahaha

Ian prieto

Oh my!, My lovely wife Meghan?! 🤯😱✨

Ian prieto

Some of my ideas: Gwendolyn Christy as Madame Maxime. I agree with others, Ben Barnes as Sirius. Benedict Cumberbatch as Lupin. Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes/Carson from Downton Abbey) as Madam Pomfrey. Jamie Campbell Bower as either Lupin, Quirrell or Lucius Malfoy. Jack Whitehall as Quirrell. Ewan McGregor as Sir Cadogan. Chewitel Ejiofor as Firenze. Noel Fielding as the Knight Bus driver.

Moon7Willow

Karen Gillan would also be a solid pick for Lily!

SaucyJTD

Some solid picks, although not all British! My other pick instead of Cate Blanchet is Tilda Swinton (although I think she turned HP down when making the films because she hated bording school). And for Kingsley Shuttlecomb (I think that's his name) I would put the current Doctor from Doctor Who. And for McGonigal I would have Karen Gillian.

HollyHollz

That was soooooo good! Can't wait to watch that!!!

Woodwind

these ideas were so fun omg love them (especially sally hawkins like she's always a win to me). it would be interesting to consider casting actors of colour in some of these roles, considering there are so many talented British poc actors to choose from - dev patel comes to mind (a lot of people see him as james potter but i think he could pull off 3/4 of the marauders tbh)

simdoodles

Olivia Coleman is the ultimate card to play in just about any role. Matt Barry always plays characters you love to hate, so it would be interesting to see how he would take on Vernon. I can accept Cate Blanchett as successor to Dame Maggie Smith! I actually like Ewan McGregor more for Lockhart. Adam Driver is the only answer to play Snape in my mind, for sure. I'm not familiar with Sally Hawkins and Hugh Bonneville, but the clips look promising! Ooooh... I would love to see Jessica Hines and Martin Freeman together as Molly and Arthur! YES. PLEASE. I need Roy (Brett Goldstein) as Sirius Black. Please. Pretty please. I would love the hell out of that. Oooh... I think I lean more toward Tom Holland and Saoirse Ronan. YES! I've wanted Rupert Grint to come back as Lupin forever now! Florence Pugh could pull off Tonks, easily. I'm not sure about Peter Pettigrew.... it is a shame that Tom Hollander is out of the age range now. I'll take James McAvoy any time and anywhere. I love the hell out of him. Stellar actor. YES. MICHAEL FASSBENDER as Voldemort. Yes, please. Another fantastic actor. I would love to see an unhinged Kate Winslet. Daniel Radcliffe as either Peeves or Nearly-Headless Nick would be awesome. I want Anya Taylor Joy for Rita... but I would want Gwendoline Christie to play as the headmistress of Beauxbatons. ... I love the idea of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg together again... but as Hagrid and Dumbledore? Man, I really don't know. I so don't know about that 😅. Would it be fun? Absolutely lol. Ah, but then again, Simon Pegg and Adam Driver playing off one another.... crap, that could be good. True fancasting: Jono as Lockhart, Alan as Snape, Megan as McGonagall, and David can play literally every other character. Let's make it happen 🤣.

SaucyJTD

For real, I can't wait to watch this

Holly✌️

Oh boy... I'll come back and edit this comment after watching, but this is gonna be interesting 🤣. Edit - It's long and full of spoilers, so I'm going to reply to my own comment instead. TL;DR: My actual dream casting would be Jono as Lockhart, Alan as Snape, Megan as McGonagall, and David as literally every other character. Let's make it happen 🤣.
