Wendigo History Pt. 2 The Druid War

The Druid War: The Enslavement of the Wendigo

291 FA - The Tension Builds

Seventeen years after the end of the long and brutal war with the humans, the wendigo found themselves in a period of recovery. The victory at Stonefang had solidified their control over Yuhia, and the wendigo were beginning to rebuild their society under the leadership of Hjalti Kinshalbur. However, the peace was fragile, as the druids—once co-inhabitants of the forest—began to assert their power more aggressively. The wendigo, still wary of the druids and their mysterious ways, saw this as a growing threat.

292 FA - The Druids' Ambition

The druids, led by the powerful Jarl Sigtrygg, had grown in numbers and influence during the human-wendigo war. They viewed the wendigo as rivals, not only for the control of the sacred forests but also in the eyes of the Forest Father, whom they believed they had a special connection with. Tensions escalated as the druids began to encroach on wendigo territory, performing rituals and taking resources without permission. The wendigo, still recovering from their previous war, were hesitant to engage in another conflict, but the druids’ actions could not be ignored.

293 FA - The Spark of War

In 293 FA, the druids made a bold move, claiming a sacred grove deep within wendigo territory as their own. This grove, known as Gladsheim, was believed to be where the Forest Father first descended from the Higher Planes. The desecration of such a holy site was an unforgivable offense to the wendigo. Hjalti Kinshalbur, who had become the wendigo Great Warlord, saw no choice but to defend their sacred lands. Thus, the war with the druids began.

296 FA - The Battle of Gladsheim

Three years into the war, the wendigo launched a massive assault to reclaim Gladsheim. The battle was fierce, with the druids calling upon the power of the forest and the elements to defend their claim. The wendigo, led by Hjalti and his most trusted warriors, fought valiantly, but the druids’ mastery of nature magic proved overwhelming. The battle ended in a stalemate, with both sides suffering heavy losses, and the grove remained under druid control.

302 FA - The Death of Hjalti Kinshalbur

The war dragged on for years, with neither side able to gain a decisive advantage. In 302 FA, tragedy struck the wendigo as Great Warlord Hjalti, the legendary leader who had guided them through the human war, fell in battle. His death was a devastating blow to the wendigo, who revered him as the last Great Warlord of the old guard. Without Hjalti’s leadership, the wendigo struggled to maintain their cohesion, and the druids began to press their advantage.

309 FA - The Fall of Fyrnviðr

In 309 FA, after years of attrition, the druids launched a final, coordinated assault on Fyrnviðr, the largest wendigo stronghold. The druids, now fully united under Jarl Sigtrygg, unleashed the full force of their nature magic, summoning powerful storms, and even awakening the ancient trees to fight alongside them. The wendigo, despite their fierce resistance, were overwhelmed. Fyrnviðr fell, marking the beginning of the end for the wendigo’s independence.

323 FA - The Enslavement of the Wendigo

The war officially ended in 323 FA, 32 years after it began, with the druids emerging victorious. The once-proud wendigo were enslaved, their warriors shackled and forced to serve the druids as laborers and soldiers. The druids, believing themselves to be the true heirs of the Forest Father’s legacy, used the wendigo’s strength to further their own ambitions, exploiting their former rivals to expand their influence across the land.

The Long Night of Slavery

324 FA - The First Chains

With the fall of Fyrnviðr and the conclusion of the Druidic War, the wendigo were shackled and forced into servitude. The druids, seeing themselves as the rightful rulers of the forests, used the wendigo's immense strength for their own purposes. Wendigo warriors, once feared for their prowess in battle, were now reduced to laboring in the fields, building druidic strongholds, and fighting in wars not of their own choosing. This period marked the beginning of what the wendigo would later call the Long Night—a time of darkness and despair.

400 FA - The March of the Endless Oaks

As the centuries passed, the druids tightened their grip on the wendigo. One of the most infamous events during this period was the March of the Endless Oaks in 400 FA. The druids, wishing to expand their influence, ordered thousands of wendigo to clear vast swaths of the sacred forest for new settlements. The wendigo, forced to destroy the very lands they once protected, were haunted by this act of sacrilege. Many wendigo died from exhaustion or the sorrow of betraying their ancestral home.

512 FA - The Rise of the Stone Druids

In 512 FA, a new faction within the druidic order, known as the Stone Druids, rose to prominence. They believed in harnessing the elemental power of the ground beneath their feet, and they saw the wendigo as a means to achieve this. The Stone Druids forced the wendigo to work in quarries and mines, extracting rare minerals and stones for their rituals. The wendigo, already broken in spirit, now faced the harshest conditions imaginable, toiling in darkness and isolation.

600 FA - The Revolt of Skaldor

In 600 FA, a wendigo named Skaldor, who had earned a reputation as a fierce and defiant worker, led a brief but significant revolt against the druids. Skaldor and a group of wendigo attempted to escape their captors, striking out against their oppressors with the fury of their ancestors. The revolt was brutally crushed by the druids, but it ignited a spark of hope among the wendigo. Skaldor was captured and executed, but his name became a symbol of resistance, whispered among the wendigo as they endured their servitude.

716 FA - The Birth of Hjalmar Kinshalbur

In 716 FA, amidst the despair of slavery, a child was born who would change the course of wendigo history. Hjalmar Kinshalbur, a wendigo of remarkable strength and cunning, came into the world as the wendigo's suffering reached its peak. Though born into bondage, Hjalmar carried within him the legacy of his ancestors, and the spirit of the Forest Father seemed to stir once more with his birth.

As Hjalmar grew, so did the hope of the wendigo people. The Long Night had lasted for centuries, but with the birth of Hjalmar, a new dawn was on the horizon. The wendigo whispered of a prophecy, of a leader who would rise to shatter their chains and lead them to freedom. Hjalmar’s life would become the turning point in their long struggle, as he prepared to challenge the druids and reclaim the destiny of his people.

779 FA - Birth of Astrid of Direwood

In 779 FA, Astrid Jónsdóttir of Direwood was born into a prominent wendigo clan. She grew into a fierce warrior, eventually earning the title of "Warlord" due to her unmatched combat skills and loyal following. Her leadership and strategic brilliance caught the attention of Hjalmar Kinshalbur, and she became his consort. Their union later led to her becoming Queen of Yuhia, where she played a crucial role in the kingdom's governance.

The Rise of Hjalmar Kinshalbur and the Liberation of the Wendigo

788 FA - The Blessing of the Forest Father

As the wendigo's servitude reached its seventh century, the druids, now at the height of their power, grew increasingly complacent. Their internal strife between the Stone Druids, who sought to harness the raw power of the planet, and the Traditional Druids, who revered the natural balance, began to weaken their once-unified front. Amidst this growing discord, Hjalmar Kinshalbur, born into slavery yet destined for greatness, began to emerge as a leader among his people.

In 788 FA, as the tensions among the druids escalated, Hjalmar received a vision from the Forest Father. In this vision, he was called to the sacred grove of Gladsheim, the very place where the druids had first claimed their dominance over the wendigo. There, the Forest Father blessed Hjalmar, transforming him into a Nature's Wrath—a being imbued with the primal fury of the natural world and the divine will of the Forest Father. This newfound power marked the beginning of Hjalmar's journey toward liberation.

789 FA - The Gathering Storm

Empowered by the Forest Father, Hjalmar began to secretly gather support among the wendigo. The druids, distracted by their internal conflict, failed to notice the growing unrest among their slaves. Hjalmar's charisma and strength inspired the wendigo to believe in the possibility of freedom. He forged alliances with other wendigo leaders and began to lay the groundwork for a rebellion that would shake the foundations of the druidic order.

As the Stone Druids and Traditional Druids clashed over their differing visions for the future, Hjalmar saw the perfect opportunity to strike. The druids' divided attention left them vulnerable, and Hjalmar knew that the time for action was near.

791 FA - The Rebellion Begins

In 791 FA, the rebellion began in earnest. Hjalmar led a surprise attack on a major druidic stronghold, utilizing his powers as a Nature's Wrath to unleash the fury of the forest upon the unsuspecting druids. Trees came to life, roots tore through the ground, and the very elements seemed to bend to Hjalmar's will. The wendigo, inspired by their leader's divine power, fought with a renewed vigor, taking back what had been stolen from them centuries before.

The initial victories of the wendigo were swift and decisive. The Stone Druids, focused on their own internal power struggle, were caught off guard and suffered heavy losses. Hjalmar's forces moved quickly, liberating wendigo across the region and dismantling the infrastructure of their oppressors.

795 FA - The Fall of the Stone Druids

The rebellion reached its climax in 795 FA with the Battle of Bifröst Vale, where the Stone Druids made their final stand. Hjalmar, now fully embracing his role as Nature's Wrath, led the wendigo into battle with a fury unmatched by any before him. The Stone Druids, despite their mastery of rock and stone, were no match for the combined might of Hjalmar and the wendigo forces.

The battle was fierce, but the outcome was never in doubt. Hjalmar personally confronted Jarl Lir, the leader of the Stone Druids, in a duel that became the stuff of legend. With the power of the Forest Father flowing through him, Hjalmar struck down Sigtrygg, shattering the Stone Druids' leadership and breaking their hold over the wendigo.

With the death of Lir and the destruction of the Stone Druids' order, the rebellion was effectively won. The Traditional Druids, seeing the writing on the wall, retreated into the deepest parts of the forest, leaving the wendigo to reclaim their lands.

804 FA - The Dawn of a New Era

In 804 FA, after 716 years of enslavement, the wendigo were finally free. Hjalmar, now revered as a hero and a demigod among his people, declared the establishment of the wendigo Kingdom of Yuhia. Gladsheim, once a battleground, was consecrated as the heart of the new kingdom, a symbol of the wendigo's resilience and the Forest Father's enduring protection. The Holy Land would be renamed the Diredain Forest.
