It is unthinkable that we rely mostly on charities to develop better prophylaxis and treatment and, ultimately, vaccine against malaria. Since environment in Europe and North america became less suitable for proliferation of malaria carrying mosquitos, we, "civilized West", lost interest. Now most of the research is funded by a handful of billionaires as a salve for their guilty conscience (much like all those US universities founded by various kinds of robber barons.)

2022-12-23 07:08:11 +0000 UTCA 2010 study found that it evolved right around the same time as modern humans - and that it likely travelled out of Africa with them. And because malaria was super prevalent in Europe back in the day, it would not be surprising if humans passed it along to the Neanderthals they interacted with. (And chimps can get malaria, so it's likely our much closer relatives could get it too)
