Do you use Renoise?

I haven't used Renoise since 2009 but have just seen I can upgrade to the newest version for a very reasonable fee so I've been reteaching myself. Please respond to the poll regarding future Renoise content.

Is this still in the pipeline, Ned? Thanks!

Tom Hayes

Yeah what Ned said too. Missed his reply. Rewire tho. Makes Live and renoise is a nice combo.

Its pretty easy once you wrap yr head around hexadecimal. As for its use if you use Live, I only got it last year cuz I d just never used a tracker previously. And due to its connection to early iterations of break core, and the tendency of that scene to have a purist attitude towards them, like acid purists with 303's and Atari ST's , and is seen by many as tracer produced break core is the he only true break core. Personally I dont have that kind of purist mentality toward any thing. They're just known for easy break chop sequencing, especially once you get the hang of it. So I just wanted to have it as another option for beat sequencing in my arsenal. So Im not intending on using it in a DAW multi channel.Just for beat sequencing. If you DL propellorhead's rewire extension, you can launch renoise slaved to Live and have it coming through a Live channel as an audio input device. You can purchase a VST version of renoise, but its much better this way cuz the plugin is the same price as full renoise, but with limited features. Just wanted to mix up by beat making a bit, but I cant fafford a CIRKLON, and electron devices are just too small screen menu dive. Renoise was only $100AUD. Ive got the basics sorted, and ive seen a few tutorials, But I have a feeling Ned's take will be more my ally. Wasn't sure he used it, but of course he knows tracer sequencing. He was probable mucking about on the Amega trackers back in the day. And due to the overwhelmingly positive praise for the PollyEnd tracker box, especially, the bogdan and Stazma material they've done to promote it, Im super keen to get back int it again. Like gave Ned the Idea to suggest it. And I say YES NED please share your hexadecimal knowledge with us.

The workflow of trackers is different to other softwares including Ableton, which lends itself nicely to certain genres like techno and Breakcore, as you can lay down patterns very very quickly, and microedit with extreme precision, often using only keyboard commands and very little mouse clicks. Whilst trackers have been around since the late 80s, perhaps they were popularised by the demo scene and artists like Venetian snares, bogdan raczynski and the Aphex twin album druqs. I wanted to give a more detailed response earlier but was busy so used my standard “google it” response. Personally, it’s the static nature of the step sequencer that’s super interesting. You place the place head where you want and adjust stuff and it’s done. No automation windows. If you’ve used elektron gear then the p-locks concept borrows a lot from that. I think “latch” automation in other programs is similar. Here’s a link with similar explanation. https://primeloops.com/blog/blog/post/slug/trackers-a-different-way-of-making-music/

Well yea, googling "renoise" and "Tracker DAW" were literally the first things I did. But I don't feel like I'm any closer to understanding what a tracker is... E.g.: from wikipedia "Its primary use is the composition of music using sound samples, soft synths, and effects plug-ins." and "The main difference between Renoise and other music software is the characteristic vertical timeline sequencer used by tracking software" but... Well the first thing I feel is exactly what Ableton does, and the second thing, while a differentiating characteristic, doesn't really help me understanding the whys and the wherefores... (I did learn all about OSC and TUIO though!) Besides, you usually have an interesting take on the topic du juor, which is why we're all here anyway. :)

Look up trackers.

What is Renoise? Why would I want a "tracker" vs "whatever is ableton" daw?

Qu

It’s gonna take me a while before I feel confident enough to do a video that’s interesting as I’m basically relearning the basics that I basically learnt 10 years ago.

I used to use Impulse Tracker and Buzz Tracker, but I could never get my head around Renoise. I’d gladly watch videos taking me through it.

Upgraded to 3.2.1. Will get the basics down then maybe do some videos.

Been using renoise for all my tunes since 2014. Its super fun especially if you microedit. Workflow is super fast and you can do all sorts of modulation on sample based instruments. Very advanced since 2009.

I bought 1.9 and think the last version I DLd was 2.0 but never took to it. Its like Euro59 for me to upgrade so if you do decide to go ahead I'll upgrade too to play along :-)

👍🏻

Renoise was the DAW that got me into music production. I would certainly love to see more of it.
