Plans for 2018.

Hey folks. For next year I'm consider my upping my game on my videos. I'm starting to feel like mine are falling behind the standard that people expect, and whilst I've always gone for a one take/upload approach rather than candy coloured in your face youtuber branding, editing and thumbnailing, mostly cause of time, but partly cause I find that stuff annoying, however, maybe it's time to bite the bullet and put a bit more polish into my videos, so I'd be interested to hear your thoughts, what I should do to make them slicker, what I should definitely NOT do cause it's god awful annoying when other people do it.

Generally, after watching a few older videos back, sometimes delivery is just not up to shape, so I might start doing some edits here and there to make everything more punchy, and begin to move away from the man having a beer at his computer.

Also, I will parrot what everybody else is saying...keep doing what you are doing, but just a bit more...polished in a manner that YOU are cool with. (and maybe more zoomy bits when you are clicking around like a monster).

"Hello, and welcome to my new video. And what is this video about?" No better words of comfort and elegance have been spoken.

judd meng

That's cool 😃

Yes, well this is sometimes a little tricky to work out also. Most of the videos are riffs on an idea, I'll start with a basic concept then run with it until I think I've had enough, so sometimes it's hard to come up with catchy titles. I've never been a fan of doing straight up tutorials "here's how to make your mix sound fat", because stuff like that is way to subjective, but at the same time its hard to narrow down 25 mins of me fiddling around with with a drum loop into something that fits into a 4 word title, but this is all good feedback for me. :)

Ned Rush

But seriously, you're the first person I've even considered doing the patreon thing for. The only quibble is that sometimes your titles are "Ned Rush does a thing" and I don't know what that thing is (perhaps you don't know what that thing is either), but that thing is always an awesome thing that if people knew what that thing was they'd more likely click on your video to see you do a thing.

Dan Gayle

You clearly saw through my plan to make my channel cool with 13 years old.

Ned Rush

Please start every video with “What’s up, ninjas?!” That’s how all the cool kids do it.

Dan Gayle

They say the best edits are the ones you don't notice, so you can all play a drinking game where you drink if you spot one. 😉

Ned Rush

I'd say only worrying about editing out any long pauses where you forget what you're doing or to add in something cool you thought of at the end would be enough to add polish without changing the whole feel of your videos. Also I wouldn't necessarily mind an intro, as long as it's not this big flashy loud thing like so many employ.

Grimmie XII

Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate it and it's helping work out where to go.

Ned Rush

😂😂

Ned Rush

Don’t be an asshole! I’m not paying you $5 USD/mo to edit out the shit that makes you relatable. Robot!

William Lombardelli

I'll just list a few more here; not all of them production-related: Adam Neely, FrankJavCee, That Pedal Show, Pedals and Effects, Sonic State (when they don't spam my feed with freakin NAMM videos), LurkNYC, Rainfall Projects, Dead End HipHop, Knobs

DD

I don't want to screw with the formula. I just want to pimp it a bit.

Ned Rush

I like Produce Like A Pro too. In fact I'd be interested to hear any other channels people like as most I watch are dreadful.

Ned Rush

You’re fine. Don’t sweat it. The only thing I can think of as far as making them slicker is maybe a thumbnail cover for each video. Visually that would be appealing but even this isn’t necessary. However you do have a visual skill set that you don’t show off as much so maybe this can be an area to explore and fuse in.

Funky Animal

If you want to make video production a bit more slick (some edits here and there, maybe an intro or something...?!) I wouldn't mind that at all. However, as others have already said, your "formula" as it were, is pure gold. Personally, I learn way more stuff watching one of your videos a few times than I would watching ten different run-of-the-mill presentation type tutorials on the same topic. Plus I get inspired, which is arguably more important, right? Anyway, if you want more views, it seems like there's little way around some of the youtube bullshit. Maybe try some of that on your next couple videos and see how people respond. Some of my favourite channels (AvE, Janek Gwizdala's vlog, Produce Lika A Pro, to name a few) had to resort to things like dumb thumbnails and quasi-misleading hype videos titles to raise their clicks. As a viewer, I'm ready to look past that stuff if the content itself doesn't suffer.

DD

Two of my comments have not been posted. This Patreon app is so shit.

Ned Rush

Ok well back to the drawing board for now.

Ned Rush

😔

Ned Rush

Pretty much

Funky Animal

So basically, everyone is saying "Do nothing".

Ned Rush

I agree with everyone else here. In fact, I’d say drink even more beer and see what happens. You’re video’s are unique and original.

Funky Animal

I've been thinking about introducing the videos with my face, only it's been all glitched up using max patches. 😂

Ned Rush

I think you should keep doing it the way you did it until now. That's what makes them so awesome!

Sascha Be

Errrrr. I hereby demand that the beer stays with the man at the computer

Tebbisimo

I'd never edit out the bits where it goes wrong.

Ned Rush

What about if I design some opening titles and we vote in the best one? Or we all design one together?

Ned Rush

I've got the be honest, I've wanted to make an opening ident for years.

Ned Rush

For what it's worth, the man having a beer at his computer was one of things that stood out when I first started watching your videos. The chaoticness and where it continually goes wrong until you figure out how to achieve what it was you were trying to do is really helpful for me. Much better than a "here's one I prepared earlier" video where it all goes swimmingly, as that doesn't represent my music-making.

Mark Delaney

That sounds good. What would make your videos slicker is having a better view on push. But that's just me, I don't know that controller so well - for others it may be overkill.

Splinters

I wouldn't do it for all my videos, perhaps for certain ones. Perhaps I would give the "beer at the computer" type ones their own show or series title.

Ned Rush

The "man having a beer at his computer" approach is what makes your videos both entertaining and educational. I don't know if a flashy intro and a cleanly cut video would kill the appeal for me. Maybe you can start on some topics with that but ask you to not stray too far away from your current content - because that's just Ned and his toys and that is what I like :P
