Encumbrenumbra - Bestiary Entry 004

Hey everyone,

Here's the first monster this week — the encumbrenumbra. 

"Encumbrenumbras are demonic vessels possessed by many minor fiendish spirits at once, in amounts ranging from several dozen to a few hundred. Also called “abyss eaters,” these demons feast on other, lesser demons within the Abyss. Each time they feed, a fragment of their prey’s spirit remains inside them. The will of an encumbrenumbra is in constant battle with those of the spirits that possess it as a result of its feeding."

Awesome feedback, and thanks for the kind words - it's good to know there are multiple people who still would like to see "normal" monsters. One thing we should definitely make clearer is that the breakable parts stuff is entirely optional, the monsters are balanced with or without them. Good to know we've at least succeeded in making rhe witcher vibe :) We're not committing ourselves entirely to any certain direction, so again, thanks for the feedback and we'll be thinking about how we want to keep giving people a good spread of options.

What I dig about your stuff is combat was always interesting, the monsters were cool. But they had abilities, bonus actions, or legendary actions that made them seem more than a pile of hit points. I think this new system makes them almost too complicated unless I'm looking for folk-lorey monsters edit: And again to be clear I actually love these style monsters. I run a witcher-style game and they work well. But in my other games, i need different styles of monsters as well. I used your "four-finger" boss and reskinned it to be a giant statue last weekend. One of the best combats I've ever run ( and I run 3 or more games a week for a living.)

So I have a few thoughts on the new format of monster design. It gives off very witchery vibes and for folklore monsters this is perfect. With the harvest tables, unique weaknesses and such. However, I feel like it makes the chance of me using the monsters less like as sometimes i just need normal monsters. And the "breakable parts" just slows combat down on my side. I do want these folklore monsters! Just not only these folklore style monsters, maybe you give us 1 or 2 normal ( old style ) monsters, 1 boss, and 1 folk lore monster a week? Just a thought.
