A poll about themes and the direction of Questiary

Hey everyone,

We're tinkering away behind the scenes, as usual.

One thing we're considering is having a certain theme last for longer than a week. For example, we might do "shadowfell undead" or just "undead" for a whole month rather than a week. Or maybe we'd do it for two weeks instead of one week.

We want to know what people think of that. Do you want a bigger variety of themed sets that are smaller, like we do currently, or do you want themes that run for longer, giving you more monsters of a single sort of variety?

Either direction would result in the same amount of overall monsters being made.

This poll doesn't guarantee we'll change anything, by the way. Just doing some thinkin', y'know?

If you give me a bunch of content in a theme, i can still pick and choose what i want if i just need a standalone encounter or sidequest, but i can also, as Erik said excellently, implement the content smoothly into the world without so much work. It makes me a lot more likely to use stuff if i can do either-or just as easily.

I think a more comprehensive exploration of a theme enables a good balance of story and usability. With only 7 monsters, it feels like you have to choose between having a rich and unique theme (e.g. yokai, druid lich, shadowfel creations) and having a set of monsters that can be applied to a wider range of campaigns (e.g. useful humanoids, city of Dis, shackled king). With another week, you would have the time to make in depth unique monsters to shape an arc or a few sessions around, but back them up with monsters that are more flexible. Another thing to consider is easy it is to implement your content. With only a week's worth of content, its hard to use it for a main quest rather than a side quest. That is to say, my players could stop by the shackled king's fortress to steal some loot, but it would take a lot of work on my end for my players to truly face Karkes as the primary villain of an arc. This would be somewhat alleviated by an additional week of monsters/content, especially because I would still be able to only implement a portion of it if I only wanted to use it for a little driveby sidequest. An alternative solution would be to have connected themes. Like having monthly meta-themes with each week covering a theme within that theme, like a Mount Kunlun meta-theme with the themes "Wu Shamans", "Xian Immortals", "The Langgan Tree", and "The Palace of Xiwangmu", or a "Corrupt City" meta-theme with the themes "Dirty Townsguard", "Draconic Mafia", "Lovecraftian Sewer Cult", and "Resilient Tradespeople". A less extreme implementation would just be to connect themes on a case-by-case basis, like another theme set in the feygloam or another group affected by the War of Wills. Maybe we can look forward to a post credits scene hinting about the future of the Questiary Literary Universe hehe
