More Things We Don't Understand

The girlies are back with more things they don't understand. Such as... how do GIANT boats float? What the fuck is a nitrate? Why do we have baby teeth? Was Trisha Paytas right all along? And more
Girlies I love you and these eps make me laugh but please please get you a stemtress friend 😭 I’d volunteer but I understand that this would never work because the friendship would be uneven seeing as there is a parasocial elephant in the room. But I sit here screaming the answers to these questions particularly because I got my masters in materials engineering with a focus on glass and ceramics, part because I also do a lot of fiber crafts and grew up sailing and part I love weird random facts so I read papers whenever I too have a silly question. All of this is to say I’d love a stemstress “interview” were you and the listeners can learn together. I think it would be so much fun to chat about because none of these need in depth research but would be fun to revisit with someone who knows enough about the subjects to give an answer. Anyways! Love the pod lots and I’ll catch yall in the next one - a stemstress <3

For the where does the weight go when you lose weight question I might have an answer.
This might be wrong but I remember in primary school when we were learning about healthy habits like eating and exercising etc. we were taught that we have same same number of fat cells our whole lives so when we gain or lose weight the fat cells get bigger or smaller instead of getting more or less fat cells. And I think the fat is expelled through stuff like sweating, breathing etc.

Okay, venues are in a place of vibe for their first concert. I saw Beyoncé’s husband perform at a N E W arena. He was the first performer ever to play there. Early in the show the entire sound system blew out. Mr. Beyoncé’s husband said “we broke the fucking sound system!”— it was 5+ minutes of panic for the arena staff with all lights on before he could get back on the mic. The concert went on without a hitch but it was noticeably very less loud than before.

the other planets (further from the sun) have ice as its core because it didn’t have enough pressure to retain its heat. remember, the universe kept cooling down as it expanded. it’s technically still happening to this day, so eventually the earth might become too light (/not dense enough) to retain to heat. the cycle of life that the sun goes through will probably beat it to the punch though… it’ll explode and just take the earth with it.
some of these parts were extremely simplified and i think i explained some stuff out of order but if you have any more questions feel free to ask!!!!! i was a major astrophysics nerd (to the point where i was on the board for the Undergraduate Astronomical Society at UCLA). i’m still interested but i don’t always keep up with all the news that comes out.

1. CORE OF THE EARTH: so this has to do with how the universe started from the big bang. it’s a theory so not “proven” but mathematically this is the only thing that makes sense so far. so everything in the whole universe started as a really fuckin dense point. like a DOT. a dot you can draw with a pencil. and it was hotter than anything ever imaginable because of how densely packed all the atoms were. the big bang is basically the massive event where that little ass dot exploded and started to expand at an exponential rate from all sides, into all directions. there was basically a bunch of hot soup that developed from the expansion. the mixing and expanding of this shit from a DOT then went on to produce hydrogen, then helium, then lithium, beryllium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluoride, etc. and all the other 100+ elements. the mixing of the atoms and resulting new elements were due to its electron and proton and neutron numbers (so this is happening at a MINUSCULE level while the whole universe—currently in the form of a boiling hot soup—is expanding from a dot). as the universe kept expanding, everything started to cool down. so now let’s think of
the universe as a giant sheet, where there are more dense areas and less dense areas. think of when you pull on slime in those ASMR videos, as it expands, some parts are still opaque and thicccc while other parts get stretched thin to the point where you can start to see through it. those thicc parts are more dense and at a certain point all the atoms were like “fuck it let’s ball” so they literally formed balls at the extremely dense points since the more dense areas pulled things (atoms) toward it. the densest parts were like, physically attractive to the lesser dense parts. they literally got pulled innnnn just like my stupid ass in a situationship three years ago! that’s where stars come from. the big pimps drew in a bunch of henchmen and maximized their joint slay to keep pulling smaller (less dense) bitches. basically the smaller, less dense (yet still very dense) parts that are close enough to the stars got sucked into its gravitational pull. (the denser a point, the stronger its gravitational pull.) one of the stars that formed was our SUN. OUR SON!!!! then the planets (including our earth) formed from the less-dense-but-still-dense areas and got caught in the gravitational pull of the sun. the earth pulled together more bitches that were smaller/less dense than it and got big enough to have its own gravitational pull to attract a big ass clump of iron, nickel, magnesium, silicon, oxygen, calcium, aluminum, etc. which formed our MOON!!!! back to the CORE of the question: what the hell is the earth’s core???? it’s hot as fuck because it started off hot as fuck from that universe-soup. it remains hot because all of the pressure from all the other layers it has creates heat. this part is a lil confusing so it’s easier for me to think of how friction produces heat. you rub your hands together quickly and it gets hot, right? well all the atoms bouncing back and forth in an excited state keep running into each other and getting hot from the friction it creates. this friction is happening in the core. that, plus the outside pressure from all the other layers of earth makes it remain hot!!!

Ooooo i for a non-profit that focuses on ethical sourcing of raw materials for textiles! Each materials has a very unique process to become fabric/clothing.
Leather is often a “by-product” of the meat industry, but still is a very profitable market on its own and can drive increased meat production. Leather doesn’t just come from cows but also sheep, goats, etc. Lotsa negative effects, especially around deforestation.
Fabrics from recycled plastic feedstocks are created by melting tiny pieces of plastic into a spinnable “pellet” that turns into a yarn.
A SOLUTION is recycled materials from old clothing (textile to textile recycling) because it does not have to go through this crazy energy intensive process and uses resources we already have (:

When you lose weight your fat molecules are literally being turned into energy on a cellular level via various chemical processes and here’s the brain fuck it’s because literally everything is energy and don’t ask me why it’s quantum mechanics I’m not prepared to answer but trust me everything is energy, everything is a wave, I took a class on this, I’m just confused as you are

fashion girlie here re: mixed fabrics- they different fibers (imagine a bunch of strings of lint) are spun together to make a thread and the tension from its roughness is what holds it together, then it gets woven and knitted into fabric. the stretchiness of plastic fabrics (polyester, acrylic) is based on if it’s woven or knitted: woven has no stretch, but knitted allows for stretch. synthetic fibers like nylon or rayon/viscose (semi-synthetic, made of cellulose) really starts as a liquid and they shoot out of a tiny hole to create the tiny strands to then spin into thread. (i could talk about this forever, this was what half my major was about)

I don’t think it’s fair to say that Eliza and Julia are not curious about how the world works (pretty insulting thing to say tbh). They are just interested in exploring that through a social sciences lens (history, psychology, sociology, and culture) not physical sciences which is the umbrella under which many of these questions fall, hence the topics usually covered in the pod.

I’m a dental student! so basically you do have “two rows of teeth” because your adult teeth grow right behind your baby teeth for the majority of teeth (some of your adult teeth don’t actually replace a baby tooth bc you have less baby teeth) and this is why some kids may have teeth grow in behind their teeth. It’s not an abnormality it’s just their baby teeth haven’t fallen out before the big teeth erupt. For the most part, baby teeth fall out bc the replacing tooth wear on the roots and loosens them until they eventually fall out

Also you lose most weight through your breath - 86% of all weight lost is done via breathing out! Kinda crazy right? it’s a misconception that you lose most weight by going to the bathroom or sweating… you use the bathroom to expel toxins and waste and sweating is mainly to regulate body heat (you lose almost no weight by pooping but you lose 14% of any weight lost via peeing and sweating) but mostly you expel carbon dioxide molecules by breathing out and that equals bodyweight somehow. Also blood comes from hematopoietic stem cells in bone marrow (that spongy stuff in bones), they can later differentiate into red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells! Also the body removes old blood cells, they last a lil over 100 days if I remember correctly.

WHOA wait you mentioning the stomach lining just reminded me that he also couldn’t drink coffee for a while post-chemo because it made him sick, and he’d always been a big coffee drinker before. Wild.
And thank you so much! He’s been in remission for five years now and is doing great. It always feels ridiculous to say that “we’re so lucky” when he literally got cancer at 22, but we’re really really lucky :)
Emily
2024-09-06 04:29:42 +0000 UTC
Yes it can change the hair follicles temporarily! Basically your body will reset again after going through chemotherapy and will return to its old hair texture. Hair texture is funky too bc there is a lot of genetic & hormonal things that can influence it changing over time too! And it is initially affected (as are skin cells and stomach lining cells ) bc those are naturally rapidly dividing cells in our body so they kinda catch a stray bc whilst targeting fast growing cancer cells they also get caught up. Hope your husband is doing well!!

Hi med school binch here: on allergies to make it short there are a bunch of signals and cascades that result from the body misinterpreting soemthing harmless as harmful so the body goes into overdrive trying to get rid of it. Long story long: at first u are exposed to something and it doesn’t cause a response but causes T cells (TH2) which are immune cells to be created. Then those TH2 cells give off cells signals to another kind of immune cell (B cell) to switch to IgE (an antibody). This antibody coats mast cells which are sensitized and will activate if they encounter an allergen. Mast cells r immune cells as well that contain a bunch of diff substances like histamine and cytokines that they’ll release to tell the body to mount an immune response when an “invader” such as an infection or in this case, an allergen is found.

wait binches i have a little smidge of information about blood! your bone marrow and kidneys regenerate blood. obviously it’s more complicated than that but basically your bone marrow creates stem cells and your kidneys send out a hormone that turns those stem cells into red blood cells. your body makes MILLIONS of red blood cells a day. they lives for around 115 days. there are also certain blood diseases that shorten the lifespan of your red blood cells and give you issues like jaundice and fatigue (shoutout to myself bc i’ve got spherocytosis 💔). i hope this made at least SOME sense.

SPF stands for sun protection factor and when you multiply it by 10 that’s the number of minutes you’re protected from dangerous rays. For example 40SPF = 400 minutes of protection (but that’s assuming you don’t sweat or go in water at all so you should definitely be reapplying)

About how they decide which chemicals are toxic to humans - the EPA looks at the cost of not using the chemical (or taking lead out of pipes, etc) and compares it to the cost of illnesses and deaths and then decides on a number based on that benefit-cost analysis 🫠 so people who have pre-existing illnesses (and women - who have more sensitive reproductive systems) should have even LESS then the “healthy limit” of pfas, arsenic, etc. filter your water ladies!!

Weirdly when my husband went through chemo his previously curly hair came back way straighter, and I couldn’t find any explanation online as to why the opposite of normal “chemo curls” happened. It’s been five years and it’s only started to go back to normal in the last year or so. (He also had insanely good skin the whole time—would not recommend getting cancer in order to get beautiful glowing skin, but it was a nice perk at the time.)

I can answer the blood question!
So inside your bone marrow is where haematopoesis occurs. All your blood cells start as stem cells inside the marrow and grow and mature into your various blood cells (red cells white cells etc). This could be stimulated by a drop in your haemoglobin/infections/cuts/menstruation/low iron (you need iron to make haemoglobin). Red blood cells can either be lost by bleeding or they die and your body metabolises and excretes them as waste. Leukaemia occurs when there's too many leukaemia cells (blasts) inside the bone marrow so stem cells don't have room to grow and mature and do their job in the body.

Also they have a weak gag reflex which keeps them from throwing up and then they colic (essentially a blockage in their digestive system) which can be fatal but it's fairly common so it often isn't.

Horses are not suffering haha they can comfortably carry around 20% of their body weight. They are extremely domesticated animals, in North America there are no truly "wild" horses because they were domesticated before being brought over. It causes a lot of controversy because "wild" American horses are technically feral and an invasive species which is why they get rounded up to be sold and trained as working horses. Horses also only work for around an hour a day if even that, and we put special boots on them to keep them from getting injuries and don't ride them if they show any signs of an injury. Most horses are extremely spoiled! My horse has a chiropractor and saddle fitter, gets his feet trimmed and shod every 6 weeks, regular vet appointments, a pile of supplements, and eats 3x a day. Their domesticity (especially in the US where they are not native) has caused them to be extremely reliant on humans. It's only extreme PETA people that are against equestrian sport and its mostly because they don't know anything lol

Silica packets are a desiccant which dries things which prevents bacteria from growing/things from smelling musty which is why it'll be in things you buy. Similarly salt dries things which is why it can preserve things, it keeps bacteria from growing (all living things need water you know). You can't eat raw chicken because of something with the structure of the proteins and bacteria. Listening on my way to work as a science teacher to pregame explaining things

here to speak on the faux-crochet debate! currently there is no technology or machinery to replicate crochet exactly. there has been a knit/stitch style that looks enough like crochet to someone who doesn’t know better that they’re doing that now and calling it crochet to sell at target when they aren’t just using crochet slave labor. it’s because of dexterity and the complexity of a crochet stitch vs a knit stitch. a knit stitch is just one loop where even the simplest crochet stitches are a combination of multiple “loops and pulls”
