I'm Back! - Plans, Schedules, and Taking Suggestions

Hello!

To those who have recently so graciously decided to support my work and join: Welcome to the Supper Mario Broth Patreon! Here, you will see the full extent of my passion and dedication for Mario with long-form articles, podcasts, and other in-depth content! To those who have been members for a longer time and whose support has enabled me to get this far through my times of need: Welcome back to the Supper Mario Broth Patreon! I am so terribly sorry for not having had the ability to update it due to my real-life responsibilities, but now I am doing this full-time and you will see this space become as lively as my public accounts!

No matter whether you are a new or a long-time subscriber, the one thing I want to tell you all is: Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. You are the reason I have been able to work on Supper Mario Broth at all since 2018, you are the reason I have found purpose in the darkest hours as my family's health worsened and they passed away, and you are the reason I am able to dedicate all my waking life to the research, documentation and preservation of Mario now. You have saved my life, and I will do my best to make you proud for believing in me and giving me this miraculous chance.

For all announcement posts like this one, I will provide a summary near the beginning of the article that you can read if you are busy and are only interested in the main points of the message. Here is the summary for this post:
1. I am physically fine. I then go in-depth on the precautions I will take to protect my physical and mental health in these coming months while I am still affected by my mother's passing, so as to not risk overworking myself, so please do not worry about that possibility.
2. The first step is already taken - the restoration of all regular posting as it was before. This will be the baseline for the work I will provide in the future: the ten daily posts across all Supper Mario Broth websites. Now that I am doing this full-time, I will be able to multiply this output with greater frequency of regular posts, the addition of long-form Patreon content, and new accounts such as the Supper Mario Broth YouTube also receiving regular content.
3. Content will ramp up gradually. This is to both be able to gather accurate feedback on what kind of content you would like to see most, and to protect my health. Starting from next week, I will make one long-form Patreon article per week alongside adding more content to the regular output of the public sites, occasional experimental posts, and video content. By December, I plan the output to double, and finally, to reach a full realization of my potential in early 2025.
I finish the post by asking for feedback and suggestions for what kind of content you would like to see!

Now, if you would like to read about these in detail, here is the full message:

1. My Health and Steps I Will Take to Protect It Going Forward

One request I have received more than any other in all of your wonderful messages of support and well-wishes is that I should take care of my health in the wake of my mother's passing, and not let my enthusiasm for my new full-time work lead me down a path of overworking myself and suffering from burnout, mental fatigue, and other related issues. I agree completely. I have, in the past, been guilty of doing just that whenever I had pockets of free time and suffering from exactly those consequences, which I now have a duty to do my best to avoid to be able to bring you the most high-quality and consistent output I am capable of producing.

The last 10 days have been a blur, a whirlwind of emotion I am incapable of adequately describing. On one hand, the sheer shock of discovering my mother's passing, the stress of communicating with the hospital, morgue and funeral home, the difficulty of having to contact my remaining relatives and tell them of what happened, the responsibility to plan for the funeral, and the strain of trying to keep myself together during all of this. On the other hand, the fear of losing my only remaining purpose in life, and of my last memories of it being the ridicule of my audience as I am rightfully shamed for believing I deserved to be able to do my work as a job... which then through your incredible generosity have turned into elation, an outpouring of heartfelt messages of emotional support, and a desire to continue creating even during this time. This has been the most eventful time of my life, and I am so happy, so unimaginably grateful, that you were able to turn this tragedy into hope, and save my life.

Now, the funeral is over, and the visiting relatives have left. I am alone, and have all the time I need to start working on Supper Mario Broth. However, of course, being alone after losing someone this close to you is very often the catalyst of the tragedy truly "sinking in" and the grief taking a hold over you far in excess of anything you have felt immediately after the event due to the adrenaline release of the stressful situation dulling your deeper emotions to allow you to function. I am very aware of this, and so I will be very careful to listen to my feelings and - should a dark cloud form over my thoughts and prevent me from seeing the joy in my work - immediately contact local support groups that have been recommended to me by the funeral home, as well as seeking the emotional support of those readers who have contacted me and offered their time to talk to me privately over Discord messaging or similar services.

Another thing that I will make sure to follow is the rule that even though this is a full-time job, even full-time jobs give people time to rest, usually in the form of weekends off and vacation time. I will implement both concepts in my own way that I believe is most suitable for the operation of Supper Mario Broth: through quiet days and breaks.

Quiet days will be days on which I will minimize my active content output. I may (and in fact plan to) still make posts actively, so these are not true "days off" in that sense, but most content you will see on those days will have been scheduled in advance instead, and I may not respond to any private messages or Patreon comments until the next regular work day. Quiet days will not usually be consecutive like weekends are, but rather be distributed across the week with 2 per week, such as e.g. Tuesday and Friday one week, then Monday and Thursday the next etc. These are my equivalent to weekends; I hope this is acceptable!

Breaks are my equivalent to vacation time. From time to time, I will take a complete break from active posting and replying to messages for around 3 days. You will still see my regular scheduled content during this time, and some scheduled content will even be long-form so the output would be so similar to regular operation that you may not even realize I went on a break to begin with unless you happen to message me during that time! I do not see any good reasons to go on breaks of longer than 3 days at a time unless in emergencies, so doing one of these per 45-day period should give me enough time off to approximate regular vacation time afforded to employees around the world. And, of course, I hope it is acceptable for me to take unscheduled time off in case of illness or emergencies, which I will attempt to minimize as much as possible should those scenarios occur.

Perhaps you might be interested what I do in my free time. I believe that now that Mario is my full-time work, playing even more Mario during my quiet days or breaks - as much as I would want to - will not be productive as it would provide no time for my brain to rest from constant Mario input and could lead to mental fatigue. Instead, I will pursue another passion I have had for my entire life that I have had so far very little opportunity to do: nature walks. I love nature, and I love walking. However, due to my responsibilities as a caretaker for my family, I was unable to leave the house for more than a few hours at a time, as they required regular care to even be able to go to the bathroom and it would necessitate additional arrangements for me if I could not provide immediate assistance in those cases.

I am blessed to live on the outskirts of a metropolitan city, just on the boundary of where the city buildings end and the outlying satellite settlements (what would be called "suburbs" in the US) begin. As such, I have access to a forest very close to my home, and can continue walking through it to reach the surrounding countryside that contains fields, rivers, lakes and more forests.

I am particularly fascinated with transmission towers, also known as electricity pylons. The way they criss-cross the landscape and create these imposing and beautiful rows of towers growing ever smaller and disappearing behind the horizon is, to me, a perfect example of the joy and wonder of discovery that I love so much from Mario games, being realized in the physical world.

I love to follow the pylons and see where they bring me, through what fields and forests they run as they continue seemingly infinitely, over the next hill, past the next village, spanning the sky. Many people need to hike through dangerous or exotic terrain or climb tall mountains to feel a sense of adventure; I just need to follow the pylons.

I hope you forgive this sentimental aside, but my point is that this is exactly what I plan to do on my quiet days and breaks: to leave the house with just a small backpack with food and water and to try to follow the pylons and see as much of this beautiful country I live in as I can. I hope this will help me keep my mind fresh when I return back home to make Mario content!

2. Regular Posting and How It Will Continue

Those familiar with my sites will know that I have always done my best in all circumstances to post at least 1 Twitter/X post, at least 3 Supper Mario Broth Tumblr (also known as "the main site", suppermariobroth.com) posts, and at least 5 Small Mario Findings posts every day, and more whenever possible, ever since the launch of the Patreon in 2018. This is what I consider my "baseline" content and which I feel like I have the highest duty to provide, as this is the content my readers have always appreciated the most. I am glad to announce that this content is already being produced again at the same rate as before the recent events, and will remain to be produced indefinitely for as long as physically possible for me. Also, please be advised that I do now have a Bluesky account that, for the time being, is reposting Twitter/X content for those unwiling or unable to visit that platform, but will also evolve to include its own specific content over time depending on the coming development of the Bluesky platform itself.

I plan to slowly ramp up the regular content in addition to all of the Patreon content that will be discussed in Section 3 below. It will begin with additional Twitter/X posts, particularly experimental ones, on top of the regular content, as well as additional Tumblr posts also on top of the regular content, before graduating from occasional to regular increases of the post frequency. Please let me know if you believe any of my regular public sites is in particular need of having its frequency increased and I will concentrate my efforts on that site!

In general, I would like to again and specially reassure you that all the regular content you have come to Supper Mario Broth for all these years will continue being made and will remain my main priority no matter what other content I will add on top of it due to my full-time work. Even if you end up appreciating my new forms of content less than my traditional content, the traditional content will continue to receive the same level of effort, care and attention to accuracy as it always has.

3. Gradual Ramp-Up of New Content and Patreon Content

As I am sure many of you have subscribed to the Patreon not merely to support my regular work but also to receive my exclusive long-form content, I am happy to announce that it will start being made immediately. I will start off cautiously with one Supper Mario Broth: Special Zone post per week for the rest of October and November, as well as one new Supper Mario Broth: Supper Show podcast in November, but this will increase in December and finally hopefully allow me to reach my full creation potential in early 2025.

In case you are wondering what my full potential is, here is what I believe I would be able to create as a full-time work at my maximum capacity:

-20 regular public posts per day (twice what I did before)
-1 long-form Patreon articles per week
-2 long-form Patreon podcasts per month
-1-2 scripted high-edit videos for the Supper Mario Broth YouTube per month
-Additional low-edit video content like Twitch streams or Let's Play videos
-Additional Patreon content like the PDF guides I have always planned to do
-Finally, background work on large projects such as the Supper Mario Broth Database, which will serve as a nexus and documentation for all Supper Mario Broth content, allowing everyone to see every post I have ever made on a specific topic at a glance. This is a monumental task and will require months of background work but will completely transform the Supper Mario Broth ease of information access and help me evolve from being merely a "blog that posts fun facts" into a true institution of knowledge repository and archival.

Please note that the above is based on the kind of content I have done in the past and does not reflect any changes I make to my plans based on your feedback, which brings me to this:

I would like to ask you all to please give me feedback on what kind of content you would like to see from me going forward. You can leave it here in the comments of this post, or you can use the Patreon private messages or email me at suppermariobroth@gmail.com. I will record, consider and evaluate all of your comments, suggestions and criticism to hopefully be able to put together a program that will provide the most value and most desired content to as many of you as I can.

Please feel free to leave any suggestions no matter how far removed they are from my regular content - I just need to get a good idea of what kind of posts you believe you would enjoy seeing from me! Even e.g. if you saw my "Yummy Nikki" post and want more of that, or if you believe I would make great TikTok videos, or want me to make my own illustrations for posts more often, I would like to hear all of it if you are willing to share your thoughts!

Thank you again so much for everything, and I hope you will enjoy what's coming! My next post here on Patreon will be a Supper Mario Broth: Special Zone next week!

With unending gratitude,
Supper Mario Broth

I didn't realize before that I could comment... I wanted to say it makes me really happy that you love transmission towers, as I really love them too! Everyone thinks it's a bit strange and funny, so it fills me with joy that you also enjoy them. :)

sher

Hey friend, Have you considered using Bluesky in addition (or perhaps a replacement) to Twitter? It's a solid platform and I'm hearing folks are having better engagement and response over there. Please consider it for us folks who refuse to use Twitter as well. :)

Chris Koerner

This is all great to hear! For a suggestion, I would he interested in seeing what Mario trivia you can find at Super Nintendo World and the new Nintendo Museum. Obviously photography isn’t allowed at the latter, but I would be interested in either graphical recreations or simply descriptions of what you would notice! Of course, not everyone has been or can go to these places, and I’m sure there are some easter eggs that even some of the biggest Mario fans may not spot if they have the chance to visit them regardless. This may be a bit too far out of the usual scope of your content, but that was the first thought I had! If I come up with anything else I’ll be sure to mention it. Thanks for everything you do!

Seándwalsh

If that's what you want for the project, I fully support it. Good luck!

Thank you for your years of effort put into Mario universe analysis! Your Twitter account is a breath of fresh air and nostalgia fulfillment. Take care of yourself and know we got your back!

Raltide

Thank you very much for your advice! I would be interested in collaborating with someone to create a back-end for the database as I have very little experience in programming, but I would like to - at least for this first large project - do all the actual work of entering information into the database by myself. After it is finished, I believe I would be ready to start collaborating on such complex tasks as crossposting the information to the wiki, but I must ask you to please understand that I would like to first finish a project like that on my own to gain enough confidence in my ability to start working with others in this manner. I hope this is acceptable!

Supper Mario Broth

I'm very glad to know you are safe and prioritizing your health! Regarding the Supper Mario Broth Database, it sounds very useful for the Mario community to have, but also like a very ambitious and monumental task to accomplish, especially alone. The amount of work you have already done by yourself is outstanding, but I hope you don't intend to create the Database without any assistance. I'm sure there are people willing to help work on a project like that, whether it be categorizing data for the front-end or coding the back-end. That kind of community volunteering is exactly what goes on every day in the Super Mario Wiki. As you start the planning phases of this project, one concern I have is parity between your database and the Wiki, as they are the largest repository of Mario content on the web. This isn't to say that the Wiki would outmode a Database if you were to make one, however. The Database would be a wonderful way to browse all content that you specifically have shared across your blogs. In the process of creating it, however, I would want there to be some sort of way to track whether the information has been included on the Super Mario Wiki. Because the Wiki already uses formal citations in their articles (many of which I'm certain already point back to your content), it would be straightforward enough to track parity between the two data sources using Mario Wiki citations of Database pages. Much like the Wiki itself, I would think this would be an ongoing process. As content is uploaded to the Database, there should just be some way to confirm that the Mario Wiki is linking to that page after it's created. Incentivizing this would even bring more viewers to your site by clicking on the references on the Wiki. I've been editing the Mario Wiki since 2021 and am on their Discord server. I would be happy to try and connect you to their staff if you are also interested in the issue of parity. Best of luck with all of your new content!

"Supper Mario Broth: Cold Soup"

Sleep Deprived

As long as you're continuously taking care of yourself and placing your health above all else (nature walks are a great idea!), that's what matters most. Like I said, no matter what it takes, your fans will understand. All my best.

T

Thank you very much for your concern! I have arrived at the 3 day figure by taking typical vacation time afforded to employees yearly and dividing it by the amount of time I want to spend before taking a break (45 days), resulting in less than 3 days - so deciding on 3 is actually resulting in above average vacation time! I personally value being able to take a break more often compared to being able to take longer breaks, so if there are any problems I will discover with this arrangement, I will discuss this further with my readers and then recalculate it, to perhaps have breaks of a slightly different length at a different frequency, however, please be assured that I have spend a very long time considering my personal history of preferences for breaks, and what I believe would be best for both my work and my health! I promise I will not endanger myself!

Supper Mario Broth

Hello! You are the best, it's so glad to read all of this. I just want to strongly urge you, as a supporter and big fan of your work, to consider taking breaks of longer than 3 days. Everyone needs a real vacations—even if you don't leave your home or city, it's crucial to unplug for extended periods. Please please prioritize taking care of yourself. It's easy to burn out on the internet! I promise you all of your supporters will understand.

T

Ah, yes, that would be a good idea for a post, to try to put together a complete list of such instances in the Mario + Rabbids games! Thank you for your suggestion! And I am so happy you like my examples of this in my comic; it might be just a touch further than Nintendo would be willing to go, but I hope it still captures the whimsy of the Mario universe the way I implement it!

Supper Mario Broth

I agree with the sentiment. For example, as I recall the Mario Rabbids games occasionally use very mild profanity in their marketing and in-game dialogue - which would be completely unremarkable in many games, but in this context makes me go "Whoa, in a mario game?! Cool!" In a similar vein, the occasional Marvelous Compass jokes that include substitutions for swear words, like "Go to L" or "Bastar child", put a smile on my face.

Thank you very much for your kind words! I will definitely try to protect my health as much as possible, but I would be lying if I said I am not feeling a lot of pressure to deliver my maximum potential due to the sheer number of people willing to so generously support me. I really appreciate your (and everyone else's who left similar messages) assurance that I should pace myself and not concentrate only on output at the cost of everything else, and I will try to do my best to not let my anxiety about my performance lead me to neglect my health!

Supper Mario Broth

What a well-written and well-thought post. Thank you for all that you do. I am so relieved to hear that you are prioritizing your health (mental, physical, emotional) during this time and I hope that this continues to be a priority for you. We all enjoy the content and what you've laid out here sounds amazing, but pace yourself (it sounds like you will) and don't necessarily feel that you need to hit your "maximum output" potential in order to be a worthwhile investment for patrons. We mostly enjoy the consistency of content - it doesn't need to be constant - and I can say that I just enjoy learning about historical quirks and interesting facts mixed in with other content I consume (i.e., on Twitter). Please always take care of yourself, understand that everything you do is worthwhile, and don't succumb to (or impose on yourself) immense pressure to deliver with any certain frequency (or to your "maximum"). I think we are all so grateful for the work you have done to date and just want to support a fellow enthusiast who has a real knack for researching and presenting interesting content. Enjoy your nature walks - my continued thoughts and prayers for you and your family during a difficult time, but always remember that you have a community of fellow gamers and internet supporters who believe in you. <3

Giovanni D'Amico

Thank you so much for your kind words and your generous support! I understand completely what you mean; there is a certain appeal to seeing just how much Nintendo is willing to get away with in this capacity, or how something that they were *not* willing to get away with managed to slip past the review process. I will definitely consider putting together all my findings of this kind into a single post, and title it "Supper Mario Broth After Dark" as per your suggestion! However, it may take me a while to find everything I ever posted about it, particularly the ones I unfortunately had to delete, but I am putting it on my list of things to work on! I hope you will like it when it is posted!

Supper Mario Broth

Hello Supper Mario Broth. I have been a fan from Tumblr for some time and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support you. I understand that my suggestion may be outlandish or impossible, but as you have requested honesty about what we desire to see, I believe it my duty to provide that honesty. I have always derived deep enjoyment from some of the, shall we say, naughtier SMB posts, such as the ones that end up deleted for referencing 'unfortunate' implications- the example which comes to mind was a Twitter post of official art which appeared to feature a character in a compromising position. I understand a desire to keep the main feeds free from content that could be an issue-things that are not safe for work, or inappropriate for children, or could draw unwanted legal action. However, I am a simple woman, and when Wario makes a fart joke, I laugh, and when Supper Mario Broth posts detailed analysis of that fart joke, or of a Nintendo character saying a swear word, I laugh even harder. I love this stuff- the stuff that skirts the line of what Nintendo would normally do, that winks and nudges at our bawdier sensibilities. Perhaps some of these old deleted posts could see the light of day in a collected, separate form- Supper Mario Broth After Dark, or something along those lines, to separate it from the main feed, like DC Comics does with their Vertigo line for adults. Please know, despite the amount of words I've written on this topic, that action on this is not a major sticking point in my support for you and this project- I am here primarily to support your work. Long live Supper Mario Broth!

HollyDeer

the new photo also looks great too

Carl Hughes

oh no worries, it's a nice photo so you picked a good one

Carl Hughes

Thank you very much for your kind words, and your suggestion! I will definitely at least experiment with streaming myself simply playing a game and offering all the facts I can about it while playing, as I believe it will give me an unprecedented opportunity to point out details that are too small to receive dedicated posts even on the Small Mario Findings blog. I will also consider possibly making more posts about non-Mario topics as this has also been requested by a number of readers, but these will all of course be in addition to my Mario content instead of in any way replacing it!

Supper Mario Broth

I have edited the post to include a photo I have taken myself. Please excuse its very amateurish quality but this is currently the best I can do with my level of photography skill and my current phone. I will do my best to take better photos in the future. You can see the image if you reload this page. Again, my apologies.

Supper Mario Broth

I am so, so terribly sorry; I simply grabbed a stock photo from the Internet to represent the emotion I felt the best, it is not actually my own photo (and I would never be able to take it anyway as it appears to be taken from above the ground). I feel so ashamed that I invest so much time and diligence into sourcing Mario images but the moment the image I use is no longer Mario-related I somehow thought it would be OK to just use a stock photo without finding out who took it. After some searching, it appears it was taken by Instagram user "jplenio" and then sold to stock photo sites. I myself am very bad at photographing, but I will try to do my best to take good photos of my walks for those readers who are interested! I must please ask you to excuse this lapse in my judgement and I will endeavor to never again leave an image unsourced even if it is "incidental" and has nothing to do with Mario. My deepest apologies.

Supper Mario Broth

The photo of the transmission towers is so good. I saved the photo for myself. You seem like a great photographer so more photos from your walks would be really nice

Carl Hughes

I'm happy to hear that you truly will be following the best work system for you! After all we all function different in that matter! I totally understand about you don't wanting to do Brothership as your first gaming stream. Actually, I might feel similar if I've never streamed before. But if you stream anything you are already familiar with, me and -rest assured- more people would love to watch you! Oh and totally, the convention thing was a proposition for anything but the near future. Of course not soon, but if you consider to do it eventually, I would be thrilled to meet you in person!

Geo Pyro

Glad to hear you're taking care of your well-being! And as much as I appreciate the passion for Mario and all your wonderful posts about it, I'm glad you've got something outside of that you're into, especially since this is basically your job now. TBH I totally get what you're saying about pylons. They're kind of entrancing, in a way? I was surprisingly delighted to just read your thoughts on pylons, so thank you for sharing them. Something about the way you convey your thoughts and describe things is very pleasing. Anyway, I'm interested in all of the things you mentioned in some way or another. And even though twitch/playthroughs are not the *most* engaging things on the list compared to your regular stuff and deep-dives, I have a big soft spot for those and I'd definitely enjoy them here and there, especially if it's something you haven't experienced in a while, are playing for the first time, or are just really excited to talk about! I know you mentioned that some of your other series of interests are things like Zelda and Yume Nikki - I'd totally get if you felt they were too outside the Mario focus, but I'm also very interested in factoids/thoughts on those if you happen to be inclined. :) Wishing you all the best, Broth!

thatdamnrookie

Thank you very much for your kind words! I am so happy I was able to convey a bit of my enthusiasm for this through my words! Thank you for your suggestion, I could try inserting a picture into this bonus segment at the end of some other post and see what my readers' reception is; if there is enough interest I can then provide more pictures in the future! I hope you will like my content!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much for your feedback! If you enjoyed my Debug Mode video, I hope you will like my extended video version of the Yoshi's Safari anti-piracy screen post I made (that also features the same console and cartridge with eyes), which I am currently in the process of writing the script for! Hm, I see the database issue is really complex, so polls, perhaps even several polls for each aspect of the project, will be necessary! I will, of course, continue the comic because it is very important to me, but not at the expense of any of my actual Supper Mario Broth work. I can, however, assure you that it will now be updated again, I simply do not yet know what the schedule on that will be (at least at first before I become accustomed to my new workload)!

Supper Mario Broth

thank you for such a detailed and thought-out update! it has brought me great joy to see you get the resources and support to carry you through such a rough time and into the future, and even greater joy that i get to be even a small part of that. those nature walks sound especially wonderful, and your description of "follow the pylons" was evocative and lovely - i don't mean to add to your already considerable workload, but if you wanted to post any pictures taken during your walks, i'd love to see them. perhaps as an aside or a "bonus" post? up to you, of course, since i imagine it would be unrelated to the mario-based subjects of any posts/uploads. your enthusiasm is always infectious, whether it relates to the wonders of mario's world or the wonders of our own. :-) either way, i'm excited and grateful to get to follow you as you delve even deeper into mario's worlds, lands, galaxies, odysseys, and everything between and beyond!

the cooler lockon stratos

I'm very much looking forward to seeing you branch out to other forms of content. I've always been a fan of your experimental posts (standouts off the top of my head include the SMB3 debug mode video and the Life Anecdotes post), so now that you have more time, I'd be interested in seeing them pop up more than once a month. I see other people discussing the priority of making the wiki/database versus your goal of increasing your usual output. Personally, I am less interested in the database than I am in seeing more overall content. I understand the importance others feel for the database though (and it is a big important thing to work toward, of course), so I'll support whatever decision you reach! I know it's not directly related to this project, but what will this mean for the Marvelous Compass comic? I'm a big fan, so I hope it doesn't completely get pushed to the side, as much as I'm looking forward to all the new broth content.

Colonel Mustache

Thank you very much for the feedback! I have corrected the link; I apologize, Patreon simply auto-generated the link by itself and apparently that has issues. In the future, I will not let links be auto-generated and insert my own proper links instead, thank you for bringing this to my attention! As for the name, you may call me Supper, Broth or Mario Broth, though if I had to pick one it would probably be Broth because that is the one most commonly used, and the one Wikipedia uses for me! I will note your desire to see more Mario & Sonic content; there is definitely less documentation on that series than many others, but still enough to make a large number of posts!

Supper Mario Broth

Sorry I kept editing this, I thought it was like Twitter and clicking enter would lead me to the next line, I promise that's the whole message.

Lovepreet Singh

I'm so happy for you, I truly am. We talked in Twitter DM's already but I really am so happy for you. I'm glad you get to pursue your dreams and passions. Three things I'd like to add. First, for some reason the link you added for the main page of the Blog, it doesn't really work, apparently the link only works if you add www. but that may just be on my end. Second, is there a nickname you go by? Like Broth, or Supper, or Mario? Third, I'd really like to see maybe more info on the Mario & Sonic collaboration games, if that's info you're able to find out about.

Lovepreet Singh

Thank you very much for your feedback! I see there is already a sentiment developing that I should perhaps emphasize working on the database more in the foreground rather than in the background; I will take special care to explain this and ask for feedback on it when I make my first post about the concept for the database in November! As for the overwhelming number of posts, I had not thought about the fact that it may actually put off new readers, so I will put the final number of daily posts I should be working towards to a poll as well at some point! I hope we all will be able to work towards a solution that both provides the desired value to you while making the workload feasible for me!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! Particularly Yoshi's Island has had so much development content revealed with the 2020 leaks that I will be able to continue posting about just that for years, and that is not even getting into programming quirks I can now document due to access to a level editor! For Super Mario Bros. 2, there are always the absolute wealth of glitches in that game, which I also have yet to cover, so there will be plenty of content for both games!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much for your genuine concern, but I have thought a lot about this and due to the fact that I live alone and am not required to sync up my free time with anyone around me, and the fact that my ability to make live posts and respond to messages would be much more affected by consecutive days off than non-consecutive, I have decided in favor of the system I have outlined in my post. It is genuinely this way because it is both more convenient to me and more in line with what I would want to pick for myself, rather than a "concession" I am making while actually wanting to have regular weekends and vacations. I actually was thinking of streaming Mario & Luigi: Brothership, but decided it would be too large a project to take on as my first foray into streaming. The game is likely 40+ hours long, and I have truly never streamed before, so committing to that would make me very anxious when I have no idea if I can do even one hour of streaming without issues beforehand. However, I would absolutely love streaming new releases later, when I have gotten used to it! I also do not know when I would be able to go to a convention - I have never flown in an airplane, so to me going to the US would be a very big step and I want to first become comfortable with my work before even attempting such a thing; I hope you understand! Again, I would love to do it eventually, but this is definitely not something I can take lightly and I will need a lot of time to prepare myself for this!

Supper Mario Broth

first of all I’m absolutely thrilled to see that the patreon is back up and running! I love the articles you’ve written and look forward to more in the future. as for uploads, you mentioned wanting to eventually double your upload rate. I feel like this may be slightly excessive when you consider all of the other content plans you have for the future. I agree with another reader who said that they’d prefer work on a database/wiki of your previous posts rather than a higher volume of new posts. of course, I and many others LOVE supper mario broth and look forward to your posts, but my worry is that so many posts may lead to things getting overwhelming for readers. just something to think about! I know that you prioritize quality and have extremely high standards for yourself, so I have complete faith that future posts will continue to be similarly great :] as an aside, I love that you mention nature walks! I find them extremely grounding, and your description of them in this post was quite lovely <3 anyway that’s all of my thoughts! sending lots of love :]

halfyou

The more rare SMB2 and Yoshi's Island stuff you post the happier I am

Max Oakland

Thank you for the update and sharing your plans! What I'm concerned about is that, even though this is your full time job now, it does sound like a lot of work! It's hard for me to measure what goals are too ambitious and how much rest time would be appropriate, but you seem to have all of this very calculated. I personally would get into a more traditional work week, which would be creating and posting content 5 consecutive days and then taking 2 consecutive days off, then after a year, taking 2 to 3 weeks off every year (or taking 1 or 2 weeks off every 6 months). I would also take into account any holidays in your country. Also, I would completely take 2 days off per week against doing "quiet days", as I think it's important to completely take your mind off your job at least once or twice per week. However, I know you are quite passionate for your work and you seem to have all of this very calculated! I'm just concerned that your work and rest time is not well balanced enough and you might run into a burnout, but if you believe you can manage it the way you stated, please go ahead! I'm specially delighted to hear about your other passion of nature walks! I have to say I'm a bit jealous even, as I live on a large and bustling city. I hope you enjoy your own Super Broth adventures during your breaks! As for feedback about the kind of content I would love to see, I mentioned this before, but would be delighted to watch you streaming Mario games. I don't know if it's too soon for you at the time being, but I'm sure all of us would love to watch you play Mario & Luigi: Brothership while commenting on the game and/or mildly interacting with your watchers. I'm happy you mentioned you will be making video content for YouTube as that's something I would like to see from you the most! Also, this might be better for sometime in the future mid future, but I think it would be amazing if you could meet in real life with your readers somehow, like in a convention (San Diego Comic-Con, maybe?), where we could greet you and have your autograph. However, that's completely up to you and how comfortable you would feel doing that.

Geo Pyro

I just have to say the nature walk sounds amazing

Jack

I actually do know what they interesect with, as one I live near intersects with a park, while a slightly more distant one intersects with a local, exceptionally long trail!

e

Absolutely! You dont have to be held to what every single person wants! Do what is best for you and if you do this type of content I will be pleasently surprised and if not I will still be happy. Im very excited about any video content you make and I think working up to longer videos is smart! But even if I wasn't OK with it you dont have to fufil every persons greatest hopes! Theres a lot of us and you are one person, none of us expect you to cater to every one of us individually.

Chase Curtin

Thank you very much for your suggestion! I do not know if I currently have the ability to create such long scripted videos; I would first need to upgrade my computer to be able to handle editing something this long without crashing (which I now have the budget for thanks to all of your amazing support, but which will still take some time to pick out new parts, wait for them to arrive, install them etc.), and then learn a new editing program because the one I have been using up until this point is very primitive in its functionality. However, once I do all of this, I believe I can make long-form video content like this, though I would prefer to gradually work my way up in length to 1 hour instead of diving into it. For example, the next video I have in mind would be about 10 minutes long; I hope this is acceptable as a beginning project! I hope you will like my videos as I learn how to make them longer and more elaborate!

Supper Mario Broth

Im really happy to see this update! I hope you have fun on your nature walks. I would really enjoy Defunctland of even unraveled style videos of deep dives into mario content. Like if you put out an hour long video with light comedic elements on the history of the goomba and its variations, or a video cataloging every mario cart item and ranking how effective or well designed they are. Even if it is info you already posted seeing it in a video format with commentary would be really cool!

Chase Curtin

You absolutely didn't come off that way! I didn't mean for my response to sound like i thought you'd do such a thing - I'm sorry for that. Ultimately, yes, I think it'd be acceptable for you to post clearly indicated speculation!

Marie McCarthy

Oh, I hope I did not come off as though I was in any way implying I would want to *pass off* speculation as facts, I was merely curious whether it would be in any way acceptable at all to include it even if it is clearly indicated that it is speculation! Thank you very much for your interest in my theories!

Supper Mario Broth

I would be interested in both! I think your theories/speculation on design inspiration would make for good video topics. With that being said, I (personally) would consider it important for theories to be clearly kept separate from your factual research, for the benefit of people who may also be researching Mario-related topics in the future.

Marie McCarthy

I do have a Discord account, but I only use it for one-on-one conversations with people who contact me, not to join and certainly not run any servers, at least at the moment. Also, as an aside, anyone who reads this is welcome to private message me and ask me for my Discord data if you wish to talk to me in that manner, as well! I can handle being in several conversations at once, I just do not think I am ready for a conversation with dozens of active participants and the duties of being an administrator and moderator for such a community. I hope this is understandable!

Supper Mario Broth

I thought that you might have already had a discord when you mentioned talking to people for support, but if you don't have one don't worry about it! People having access to you 24/7 is a huge responsibility and you deserve breaks, maybe streams are better for checking in every now and then but you do you whenever you're ready

awesometownrocks

Thank you very much for your suggestion! Do you believe it would be a good idea for me to try to offer educated guesses on the inspirations for certain things, or should I stick entirely to things either said directly by the developers or so similar that an inspiration is beyond reasonable doubt? If speculation is on the table, I can offer a variety of suggestions for what I believe based on clues, hints and circumstantial evidence about origins of designs in that manner!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much for all your suggestions! I am so surprised and honored by the positive reception of my bits of personal life and opinions I share, I can only hope that the other details I will share in the future will be of interest, as well! A weekly roundup sounds great, but I am afraid I might be bothering the subscribers too much with repeat content. I will think of ways to add extra value to the roundup that would not feel like mere reposting, and put it to a poll later!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! I will keep that in mind for when I feel ready to do it, but again, I hope you understand that I simply do not believe I am currently ready to take on the responsibility of leading a community when I just started taking on all these new responsibilities of a full-time job! I will do my best to get to the point where I can open it up as soon as possible, of course!

Supper Mario Broth

I'm most excited for your scripted YouTube content and your podcasts, and the increasing posts to the tumblr/website. As far as specific content goes, I personally enjoy learning about early designs of characters/environments, and also learning where the developers may have gotten inspiration for said design choices from. Honestly, though, I'm excited to see anything and everything you have to share!

Marie McCarthy

If you do decide to create a discord, it may be good to only open it to Patreon supporters, even if only at first. A smaller community would make it easier to handle and moderate, I’d think. Thank you for everything that you’ve done and for your amazing archival work!

Shariah Alvarenga

Hello Mr broth, thank you for your thorough post. I'm glad you have strong plans in place to look after your health going forward. I did have a couple of suggestions. I saw that some people asked you to talk about your nature walks, and you said you may incorporate this into your longform posts going forward. Perhaps you could also include a few other personal touches, like movies you watched recently, and some personal comments related to the subject of your deep dive article. For example, if you were talking about enemy ai behaviour in mario 64, you could talk about which are your favourite enemies, and what memories you have of first encountering them. My other suggestion was for a weekly roundup here on patreon of all of your posts across twitter, tumblr, and any other platforms with unique content. I love to see all of your posts, but your output is already so large that I miss some. If it were possible for you to make a patreon post that can be seen by even non-subscribers, it could help draw people to your page, where they may be tempted to pledge! Thank you for taking the time to read my comment.

RainbowBatsuit

Thank you for the update, I'm glad you're doing well/better! I would be interested in your opinion on various topics, be it about games themselves, popular theories, making game reviews... Your content is already awesome though !

Stylish

Thank you very much for the suggestion! I do not know if I am ready to add information to the database that isn't actually part of a post until it already covers all posts, at which point I will gladly consider having a "material that is of interest but was never in a post" section! However, please understand it will take a long time to get to that point, several months at least, so I hope it will be worth the wait! I do in fact have a large collection of material, and I would love to be able to put it in a repository, so I really appreciate this idea!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much for your feedback! I will definitely make a post about the database and my plans regarding it in November, and I will be taking all suggestions about it, including to what degree I should prioritize it! If more readers share your opinion that it is more important than increasing my daily output, I would gladly work on it in a more active manner! I hope you will be there and offer your opinions on my detailed plan for it when I make the post!

Supper Mario Broth

I really appreciate the update, and am so glad you're doing as well as you can be during this time 💕 I'm very excited to see what Supper Mario Broth full time will look like in the coming year! For my part, I would honestly totally support and emphasize the utility and effort to prioritize the compilation of your facts and findings in a database, and would argue the preservation of the work you have done so far might be worth focusing on first before doubling your posts per day? I think your archival quality is one of the most important qualities of Supper Mario Broth, and I would love to have that archive accessible, especially during this tumultuous time in video game preservation. Also, I would love any more illustrations from you in your experimental content, they're great!

pickledragon

I'm excited to see it, regardless of what the final product will be like. Could you consider adding a section for illustrated/rendered promo art? The official Mario Wiki has something similar to this but it's missing a considerable amount of deep cuts (like the Super Mario RPG soundtrack art, as a random example) and you have to look at it by game. I like collecting niche Mario art and having something like that would be a great resource; I'm sure you have a stash greater than mine by an order of magnitude

Devin

I would like to do it all on my own because as much as I appreciate the help from my readers, I think it would be nothing but preposterous to receive enough support from your generous contributions to work on Supper Mario Broth full-time and then go on to crowdsource the work I should be doing. No, this is my website and I will put in all the time and effort I have to document everything by myself - as a side effect, readers also get the assurance that the database is up to the exact same quality standards that my posts are (note that while I do trust most of my readers to also work to the same if not a higher standard, there is always a risk of bad faith actors inserting themselves into crowdsourced projects; I hope you understand my hesitation). As for your question - I do want it to be more like TCRF with one page per game/topic, subdivided by aspect (e.g. Glitches, Hidden Details, Promotional Material etc.) and each post being summarized alongside a small preview image linking to the actual post. I will post a mock-up of my vision in an update in November, where I will take feedback on the site to refine it before I start working on it! I hope you will like it!

Supper Mario Broth

Earlier you mentioned a "Broth Wiki" of sorts; any plan to crowdsource writing for that, or would you be filling that out yourself? Also, would it be similar to TCRF with pages for each game / subpages where more detail is required, or something more like a booru with tags / albums per factoid?

Devin

Thank you very much for your suggestion! I do plan to try out livestreams, at least just to see what it feels like and what my readers' reception of them is! I do not know about being able to make a community Discord just yet as my personality always compels me to try to answer questions and I feel I would spend 24 hours a day in the server just replying to messages! I first need to get used to my increased workload and get into a more comfortable mindset before attempting such large-scale community interaction, I hope you understand! However, I would like to do something of that kind in the future!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you so much, I am so happy that I was able to convey just a little bit of why I love walking and following pylons so much! If this can motivate anyone else to go outside and simply take a walk through a forest - no matter if you like pylons or not - I would be delighted! With all the information overload of the Internet, we all need a walk from time to time!

Supper Mario Broth

You are very welcome! You're a fantastic writer. Keep it up, Broth!!

Robotortoise

Thank you! I do not believe many of my readers would appreciate me putting a personal project like the Paper Luigi comic on my Patreon, as they are supporting me to document factual Mario information, not fan projects of that kind. However, I will continue reblogging the pages from the comic's Twitter and Tumblr accounts on the main Supper Mario Broth Twitter and Tumblr accounts, respectively, for the benefit of those readers who do not wish to follow the dedicated comic accounts! I hope this is acceptable!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! I am so happy that my posts can not only provide information about game development to players, but also inspire actual game developers! I can only hope that now that I am able to do this full-time, I can dig even deeper into the programming side of the games and uncover even more interesting details like this!

Supper Mario Broth

Hello you beautiful carrot 🥕 The content that I would like to see the most would be the live streams, or anything more community based like having a discord or doing polls or something like that I recommend this because you mentioned spending a lot of time indoors due to your caretaking responsibilities, and with those responsibilities gone and working alone just remember that we're here and you don't have to do everything alone. Maybe something Halloween related would be fun, I really liked that primer video and the fort francis music just happened to work as a Halloween song so I added it to my Halloween music playlist

awesometownrocks

I'm so glad you're putting things in place to look after your health, that reassures me a lot! After joining the patreon just recently, I very much enjoyed listening to the 5 podcast episodes that are on the podcast feed! I find your voice very relaxing to listen to, and your formatting and thoroughness are impeccable! I'd love some new podcast episodes, but other than that I'm happy for you to continue with a similar level of content as you used to! The more you pace yourself, the less risk of any future drying up of content! (even though the well you draw from is vast!) Finally thank you for sharing your walking hobby! I must confess it was written in such a wonderful way that it brought a tear to my eye! Keep following your passions! <3

Jonathan Stone

Thank you for all the work you do! As a question, do you plan on including anything pertaining to Paper Luigi and the Marvellous Compass here? Or is that separate entirely from Supper Mario Broth?

donutpastry

This is fantastic. You hadn't posted about yourself very much in the past, so it's endearing to hear about your interests beyond Mario, and I'm genuinely glad you're setting boundaries for yourself and your work. All of your logic is extremely thorough and logical, and I'm extremely grateful to have your posts. I said this on your video, but your posts constantly inspire me as a game dev — the "Bowser's true nose size" in New Super Mario Bros was genuinely super inspiring for my visual novel, and how "janky" programming or writing is sometimes okay and no one will notice. Thanks for all you do, truly.

Robotortoise

Thank you very much for your suggestion! I am currently in the process of deliberating whether I want such videos to be scripted or not. I feel that if they are scripted, obviously there is more interesting content per minute of watch time, but I would be forced to not mention details that are only very mildly interesting since that would make the effort to edit the content exponentially larger. However, if I simply record long-form unedited gameplay (or stream it), I would have the opportunity to point out absolutely everything I know about the game, even the tiniest details, without it needing to increase the ensuing workload. I will, of course, put this all up to a poll later once I have clearer ideas of what I could see myself doing! I hope you will like the resulting content!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! You are now the second person to suggest that I should share what I see on my walks, so I will definitely do that, though I am not certain if this deserves its own dedicated post. I will keep it as something to add on to the end of a different post for now! And I am so glad I was able to inspire you to try it out yourself! My suggestion is to first use Google Maps satellite view or something similar to see them from above and determine if there are even any paths going near them at all - you probably wouldn't want to be walking straight across a privately-owned field with crops. If they go through a forest, and there is a path that connects them (which there should be so technicians can access them easier), that is the best scenario as it will give you amazing scenery while you follow them! I wish you all the best in your pursuit of this!

Supper Mario Broth

Glad to hear you have a plan for moving forward! Thank you for the years of entertainment. I would certainly be a fan of slightly longer-form (but understandably less frequent) analysis videos on Mario and Mario-adjacent games, along the lines of 2CPhoenix’s recent Mario sunshine series, with a focus on showcasing interesting trivia chronologically through the game. Food for thought, though I’m very happy with the type of content you produce today and plan to produce.

Andrew

You know, your talk of following the pylons makes me want to follow pylons myself. There are two rows reasonably close to where I am, so I'll check and see if it's safe to walk alongside those. If you find anything interesting on your nature walks, feel free to share!

e

Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I will look into what kind of content YouTube creators recommend to be separated out into different channels in this manner!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! However, I am terribly sorry, but due to very negative experiences trying to collaborate with some content creators in the past (having my money stolen, being ghosted, being insulted behind my back), I have developed an anxiety about committing to such events and cross-overs so I am afraid it will take me quite some time to be able to gather up the courage to attempt something like this again. I will have to spend a lot of time with them beforehand to truly make sure I can trust them, I hope you understand. However, I do wish to do this at some point, I merely do not know when that would be possible, and it will not be very soon. I apologize.

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! Oh, I have played B3313 when it was released and have kept up with all its updates - it is my single favorite piece of fan-created Mario content due to just how masterfully it blends the mythos of Super Mario 64's dark side with the exploration-based Yume Nikki-like gameplay while creating a unique experience! I can only hope I will ever experience anything else that will make me feel the same way B3313 did, because is a masterpiece!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much! Yes, the database has been a plan of mine since pretty much 2016, when I took over as the sole author of the blog, but it is such a grand undertaking that I simply could not muster up the strength to even start it. However, now that the incredible support from my readers has allowed it, I will make this database a reality, no matter how many hours I need to put into it! I hope you will enjoy browsing through it when it is operational!

Supper Mario Broth

I am so glad that there are other people who share this kind of passion, because I honestly felt very silly writing it and was wondering if anyone would be able to relate at all! I hope you will get to follow the pylons soon, as well!

Supper Mario Broth

I will definitely prioritize quality of my posts to remain on the same level it has always has versus simply increasing output at the cost of that quality. I will only take on more responsibilities when it is clear that I trust myself to fully live up to the ones I already have! Thank you for your concern!

Supper Mario Broth

Thank you very much for your suggestion, I do not know how many of my readers would appreciate such non-Mario content but I will perhaps try to insert it at the end of other posts or updates here on Patreon as a kind of bonus story for whose who are interested!

Supper Mario Broth

On the topic of low-edit content, it may be a good idea to create a separate Youtube channel for those depending on the format (algorithm reasons). I personally prefer longer form content (like live streams or hour+ long videos) to something like 15 minute long episodes of lets plays (but shorter episodes can be better for showing very specific segments of a game)

You'll figure it out

Happy to hear you're taking care of yourself! Please enjoy those nature walks and I'm excited to see what you make in the future!!

purples

I'm glad you're doing well and taking care of yourself! Don't be afraid to adjust your quiet days and vacation time if you find that your current schedule proves to be too much!! As for suggestions - I think it would be super cool to see you interact with other Mario enthusiasts and personalities occasionally, to have a sense of community! Even if it's just twitch streams with your followers playing a Mario game, or if you got invited to a podcast with others to talk about your findings - I notice you seem to be very independent, and I think lots of people would be overjoyed to hear you'd like to collaborate with others once in awhile! Unless you don't want to of course : )

TidalWave

very difficult upload schedule, but the work ethic for the last few years gives me confidence.

John Smith

You're awesome, Broth! Happy to be a patron. I've enjoyed your posts since the beginning so when I saw your plea it was a no-brainer. As an aside, if you love both Mario and Yume Nikki, I recommend the romhack B3313, if you haven't already played it

Rosetta Stephens

Really glad to hear things are going your way and I'm excited to see your content going forward! Especially that Supper Mario Broth Database! Being able to glance at any piece of Mario trivia whenever in an easy to read sounds amazing! I will wait patiently to see whatever it is you put out! Keep up the great work!

BAZO27L

While not pertaining to the main points of this update, I was very happy to read about your enthusiasm for electricity pylons, because I also share that enthusiasm! It's a dream of mine to someday explore the landscape of where I live to see how far they go, so to know that I'm not alone in that dream has made my day! Thank you for everything you've done, I look forward to everything you plan to do, and I hope you enjoy your walks following those pylons!

TaphWithNoLastName

it’s most important to me to hear that you’ll be taking care of your health!

Max Fawcett

I'm so glad to hear about your plans to take care of yourself. Following the pylons reminds me of the skyboxes in Super Mario 64 - what's out there beyond the level's edge? Sounds like a great way to spend a Quiet Day. :) I'd be happy to subscribe here if all you did was keep up your regular content as-is, so getting all this extra awesome stuff too is frosting as far as I'm concerned! I can't wait. <3

Tom

For years I loved the little Mario posts from a certain Twitter account never knowing it was Supper Mario Broth until you shared your most vulnerable day with the world. I saw your 6min video not too long after and I didn’t know much of you yet still knew you gave me a lot of smiles and interesting facts. Since then I’ve been following your work and signed up for Patreon solely for it and I’m glad to hear you’re doing good. Best wishes for you and I’m excited for all that you have in store 🥕

Ruben

Thanks for the update, and I appreciate the transparency. But please remember that your health and wellbeing is the most important thing. Though it can be good to have goals, please don't feel too bad in case you're not able to meet them. Also, quality is more important than quantity. With that said, I look forward to all the great content you'll be producing!

Leon Byford

Your work is invaluable to the mario community, i look forward to whatever you do!

Ammaregg

Thank you for the update!! Glad to hear you'll be taking care of yourself. I'm looking forward to seeing everything that'll come next

Thomas Townsend

thank you mr. broth for all your hard work! i loved especially your aside about nature walks and the pylons and if you ever posted any fun observations from those, i think those would be very interesting too even if it is rather different from your other content ☺️

Ebii

You are the reason I downloaded Patreon, Mr. Broth. Thank you so much for doing what you do and for being such an unchanging beacon of hope in an otherwise pretty rubbish world.

Gammonboi

I’ll absolutely get the chance to read it all— thank you for updating us! Super glad to know you’re taking the steps to care for yourself as well. Wishing all the best and I very much look forward to new posts! 🌟
