I love these early episodes, but Crunchyroll for some reason has problems buffering some episodes split around 80 or so through 150. For those episodes that freeze up on you, know that it is a global problem for everyone, and you may need to find a new medium to watch the show.

When a man challenges another man over a woman, it's not meant as treating her like a prize. It's meant as a way to prove himself to the woman. Like, it's not like she would have been forced to be with Kondo if he won, but he wanted to beat Gin to prove that he's better and get Gin to back down.

Fun facts: This era and this whole mess actually happened in real life. But it wasn't the Amanto/Aliens of course, it was the arrive of the USA and other contries that forced Japan into the "Globalization". This gave the first steps to enter a era of wars, crimal groups, and groups of japanese people who tought this change was happenening too fast or it shouldn't be. But it was also about the people who were trying to adapt to these changes in the middle of the whole caoz. This is what is Gintama kinda about. They mention and use characters that did actually existed in japan Story. Like okita Sougo, katsura, the Shingengumi group and others you will met in further episodes. This anime is more realistic than it looks like in so many levels.
