AHE: Emily designs NSFW
Added 2021-10-31 13:20:04 +0000 UTCOctober in its entirety was an attempt to pull Dsconocido away from working a tiny bit on every design at once and instead work through one character design and two illustrations in a month, to see if she could at least keep up to the basic monthly standard I tried to hold Zaph to and so that I'm able to regularly post game progress for all of you.

I picked the Emily character design for her to finish to completion, as she's the first girl that appears in game, and we'd been impressed with her (abandoned) previous Emily design. Had Dscono give her a tighter shirt and reduce the length of her arms slightly, but overall didn't want to frustrate her with too many big redraws.

From there I asked her to then do a sexy Emily illustration using the finished Emily design, and we went with the looking-back-over-shoulder teasing pose that's probably the most iconic for her from the story.

It turned out... okay. I think going through this process with Dscono made me realize that I don't like the way she "finishes" her colors and shading in that specific faux-realistic lighting style as it makes all of the facial features except the eyes hard to make out--then the eyes aren't in that realistic style which makes them stand out in a jarring way. In general I preferred the each of the WIP early sketch versions to the finished results.
The second illustration for the month was to be a version of Emily handing Brian the charm to see how Dscono handled drawing her previous designs in new posings, and... well, she just didn't.

I've talked with her some about how I preferred the sketchier look with the more clearly defined lines and how not going through her full final coloring could save time, but so far nothing. Frustrating month overall with Basem still on break from taking commissions and my enthusiasm having Dscono as our lead artist has again cooled some. Going to adopt a wait-and-see and if Dscono actually finishes the second Emily illustration and it impresses, we'll consider keeping her. She's already paid for that, in the meantime for November I'll likely just focus on hiring Tennessee and Yee as they've both been doing amazing.

Forget cats, this sounds like herding MMO players. Edit: I wasn’t certain at all what you meant about the faces, then on the most recent pass-over it clicked. Emily’s face can look incredibly flat depending on the angle, but her eyes pop regardless. I kind of like the effect for her. It seems thematic of her history and traumas (small, looked over, hidden, buried secrets), but that seems more accidental than by design.
