That said, it's totally possible that girls do bunch up as a result of a self protection instinct, even if they don't realizes that. Guys actually do pose a potential threat girls (at least historically) need to be weary of until they know the guy better. Jordan Peterson (regardless of what you think of his other opinions) has some very interesting things to say about the kinds of social interactions people have dealt with for thousands of years.
