When I started coloring, I realized that the orange/red warm hue wasn’t really contributing to the mood here. My initial thought was to give a “sad moment/expression” something “warm/beautiful” but let’s be honest… there isn’t much happiness with Touya. Instead, I gave him some “lively” eyes – something I didn’t do in the sketch on purpose. I really wanted the contrast of “sad and happy” So I changed the color *again*
First I wanted to try green or violet, but it didn’t fit well… also, as always, it made his scars and wounds look muddy. I love esp. the borders of his healthy and burned skin!
I tried to keep the saturation down though and I even layered a skin tone at the very end over it. I thought it would be more fitting. Somewhat healed, yet still rough/open and very tender. Scar tissue should be resembling more of a skin tone than a fleshy one, but I figured his wounds are so bad, that they never healed properly?
The scars really bothered me for a long time and I changed them quite a lot, mainly because the entire piece was lacking detail. I tried to texture them with different methods or highlight the ridges. I ended up just using a rough pencil brush and my shadow layer to scribble some lines over them.
