The Black Canary Collection

I think the main drawing here is my second most-recent Black Canary, but otherwise they flow in backward order like the Black Cat collection.

Many of you may know (tho many may also NOT!) that the very last drawing in this collection was the first to make my twitter following explode; I watched as the numbers just rose and rose all day while I was at work, eventually hitting sixteen-thousand likes and rocking me to my core. I drew the next drawing a week later and got another five-thousand likes, adding even more new followers. I’ll be forever grateful to those two drawings; they were some of the first pieces for which I used actual reference, which as you may know, I only like to do so much; but when it works, it works, and when the audience stumbles upon it, that makes everything that much more exciting! ☺️☺️☺️

I didn’t draw her for another couple of years, and when I did, I was using even MORE direct reference - but I liked the results! I put a ton of focus on the jacket in particular, primarily because I think a lot of artists just…don’t always care to make their vinyl look like vinyl, their leather like leather, their latex like latex, etc. I do care about that, and I want that to always come through in every piece that I do 🙂

Eventually I stopped drawing so much using reference, and that produced the last few drawings here. I’ll probably draw her again soon, primarily because I am having a fucking blast drawing curlier/wavier hair of late, and I wanna keep going with that thickness!

Tbh, she has been one of my most popular character to draw, and one of my most-drawn characters period (apart from Mary Jane); I am still a little dismayed that I have never been asked to draw a cover for her, but it doesn’t help that most books she was in are no longer running (and by the time I got around to asking to do a cover for the upcoming Sirens book, all of those covers had been finished long ago).

But, as is always the case, I’ll likely get a chance in the future! I just hope her outfit at the time is one I will enjoy drawing hahahaha.
