FLYER PROCESS

So here is the finished flyer I mentioned in my last post. This took me long (too long) to do, and sometimes I got discouraged because my tools weren’t working in the way I wanted. Still, I’m going to take you on a quick step-by-step process of the building of this!
Basically, the layout is exactly what I had in mind initially: a girl dancing, with her right leg crossing down the page in front of a non-binary person, who is just kinda chillin’ lookin’ cool, while a mohawk-punk’s head pops down from the top left corner.

The difference, tho, was my original intent with use of color. I was trying to utilize all the colors represented in the inclusive pride flag. So the image would be full color, except for these shapes that would be flying around the page (essentially just the a shaped formed as a frame, with nothing filling it in, and each frame was one color of the flag). Now, when a border interacted with one of the people, the area it crosses over would NOT be filled in with color, and the linework in that area would become the color of the frame (if this sounds confusing, it’s because I am terrible at explaining it).
Eventually I decided against that, because I didn’t want my nice drawing to have these thick frames getting in the way of detail. I also came to realize that it was a bad idea to have areas where the colorful frames were interacting with the art remove the color from that sectoon, because what did that say about pride? That it’s lifeless? Nah, I’m not about that. And so instead I changed it so that it was just a light version of each color of the flag used as a filled in space in the picture with NO border around it, and those areas where they interact with the art would be the only spots with color. Still didn’t hit the final version, though, because while those areas would be full color, the linework in said areas would be the full-color version of the background color in a given space, like this:

(Sorry for the shoddy pic).
As I was working, though, I was like, “Fuck that, because all those colors are going to clash really hard.” So instead I just hoped that people recognized each background color as that of a more transparent version of its respective flag color.
The only major problem I was having after that was realizing that my Wacom tablet was on the fritz, and so I didn’t get to do this in the “full-color” way I had hoped, meaning that I stayed away from adding highlights and low-lights. I was definitely frustrated, but also considering how much I was to be paid, I think my work here more than covered that.
In any case, I was really fortunate to be able to work on something that was as freeing and as fun as this!!! My next project will either be a movie poster or the beginnings of my my comic (fucking FINALLY). I am v stoked!!!
