MY LIFE TO LIVE (comic cover and process)

Hi y’all! I recently finished the cover to my upcoming comic book, MY LIFE TO LIVE, which is premiering at STAPLE! on October 12-13. The book is twenty pages, and I hope you’ll find it super worthwhile!

The cover is based off this super famous photograph of Jean-Luc Godard. I had thought about doing the cover like this months ago, but for whatever reason, I ended up deciding against it; then like a week or two ago, I changed my mind simply because I felt it actually dealt very well with the themes of the book (both in terms of the image itself, and how it was colored.

I threw the pencils together quite quickly, because I had plenty of easy reference.

The inks were, like always, a bitch!! For whatever reason, I can never care to ACTUALLY figure out what leather looks like (even tho I was initially planning to use a lot more shadow detail) - my goal is just this: What looks fucking cool? Does it look like leather? Nah. But does it look siccc af??? Certainly! So...yeah!

Coloring was dummmmmmb. I need to learn how to better use my tools. When I finished the coloring, my friend Tamra was like, lHow long did this take you?” And I was like, “All night.” And she was just like, “Chloe, do you know what the magic wand tool is?” And then I wanted to cry!!

Anyway, the goal of the color was to break everything down to just a CMYK color scheme (with white, or course), because I have a tendency of liking to break down form to its most basic as a way of creating an understanding of how the functions of said form actually work. Unfortunately, I am not sure the comic itself addresses things with as much meta-detail as I have in previous works (mostly movies), but it definitely hits at how art affects us, and so I still think the basic color technique is appropriate!

Anyway, have to finish the final inks on this thing, but I am so, so very excited for y’all to read it when you do!! Should have some more posts the closer I get to finishing it! Thanks to y’all for your support!!
