Poor, poor Anaïs! 😭😭😭
When I originally was concocting this book, I figured that the Agent character would basically talk about how the public was turning against Anaïs and that she didn’t realize that she was falling apart (which thus in turn would make her realize she was, in fact, falling apart); but then I was like, “Oh, Resident Evil,” and gave him some syringe of shit that would poison her body, instead. I was going to try to do something Crepax-y with this one page of eyes and like have her vision of him start to blur and stuff, but I didn’t have the space.
The silhouettes at the bottom of page 10 were made because I had to appropriately change her position between pages 10 and 11 (since I drew page eleven like a month before these other ones), and also because there needed to be some kind of beat between the injection and the realization. I don’t know how successful those silhouettes are in creating that beat, though, because my eyes personally all glaze over them every time I read it. But also I know they are there, so I am really interested in what other people think when they see them for the first time haha.
Also I had to redraw the original top panel of page 10 (below) because it fucking sucked in comparison hahahahaha

Page 12 is interesting because I originally had the lights with the eyes on them on a different page (below), which I drew before I realized I couldn’t fit it into the 24-page limit; also the idea that it broaches just isn’t something I had space for either. So I recycled the visual metaphor and put it here, instead.

If there is one thing I find maybe slightly annoying about this book, it’s how I handled the page turns. They all ARE page-turns, with bold, bold images every time you flip, but I think I might burn people out on big splashes by the time a big splash is actually important later on. I also feel like this book could have been greatly condensed… but that’s just not what I wanted to do haha.
I really like page 13. Both the top two panels are some of my favorites of their faces in the book (especially the Agent’s eyelids behind his sunglasses??? DELICIOUS!!!). Honestly it’s probably just one of my favorite pages in the book, period; I think it flows super well. Also I love that he calls her “mademoiselle” with such asshole disdain hahaha. What a piece of shit this mother-fucker is! 😂
