Womble's Soapbox - DayZ Standalone - Update #2

Last week, with the completion of Random GTA Bullshittery, I decided to return to that DayZ standalone critique series that I had previously started in April.

This is a new format of videos that aren't really related to the bullshitteries. And I've given them the working title "Womble's Soapbox".

For those not up to speed, they're analysis videos, where I'm hoping to go into great depths talking about DayZ and it's themes, development problems etc. And I'm hoping (if you approve of them) to possibly talk about other franchises in the future, such as the incoming Battlefield 1.  These won't replace bullshitteries of course. But like the horror episodes, can be stuff on the side.

The previous two entries can be found here:

 - Womble's Soapbox - The DayZ Standalone - 01 Intro

 - Womble's Soapbox - The DayZ Standalone - 02 History

Last week & today I  was working on the third entry, titled '03 The activities problem'. It's very nearly complete, and I'm hoping to have it finished either tomorrow or wednesday. After which I'll probably make a start on the next section, which is much shorter, titled '04 The pvp balance'.

There are about nine sections in total for this critique. And I'll keep releasing them only to you,  my patrons and twitch subs, until they're all finished. And I could really use your critique & feedback if you have the time? So I can adjust and modify any arguments that you find weak or otherwise unconvincing.

Next week though, I'll return to a bullshittery episode :)

Womble's Soapbox - DayZ Standalone - Update #2

Comments

no no, you're not wrong. I missed that deadline.

SovietWomble

Sorry I misread your post and thought you would release the reviews/rants on Wednesday. Keep up the good work my favourite youtuber :D

Elbasan Kadrija

Still being worked on :S Going through some final QA renders to spot errors. On the 5th one now.

SovietWomble

What happened?

Elbasan Kadrija

I've never played DayZ and I was never fully aware of the history (other than "'t was once a mod, and now it's a standalone"). This video was very interesting to me, I'm very fond of the pace and how much information you manage to pack in a minute, whilst still being very funny. I never realized what has been bugging me about a lot of Early Access games until you pointed out the iterative criticism aspect of it. So yeah, please continue! I didn't think I was going to like this but I did.

Govert Versluis

I think it's save to say that they will become the greatest critique Videos on youtube. I#m not kidding. I mean come on a critique Video + Womble Humor? How can that go wrong? HOW? Anyway i dont have any other Feedback to because i watched them over and over again because they are great and also very understandable and on the point. Kepp the other episodes like this and they will later become one of the most seen critiques. Listen to my words and keep them in mind (even if i'm a german dude which cant argue good.......) :D Thanks for the awesome vids you make womble not only the critiques :)

LoneWolf38

Thanks. Oh they will. But before it gets posted up to reddit for all the standalone fan boys to rip every arguments to shreds, I need all the episodes to be finished and supporting each other. And I need feedback from you lot to spot any arguments where I may be barking up the wrong tree :)

SovietWomble

For an outsider to all of DayZ and Arma the two parts was fun watching. The cliffhanger at the end make me want more :)

miwi

You're doing a great job on these video's. They are fun to watch, give people a great overview about the game and it's history, and what it is about. But, why did you decide to only release this to twitch and patreon subs? It seems to me that the dayz community and people interested in starting to play dayz will benefit from this.

Wouter Stouten

Thank you kindly. And fingered crossed you like this one too. Greetings from the United Kingdom :)

SovietWomble

I can't really find anything worth critique, I'm just very much looking forward to the next part now.

Per Markus Edvardsen

I don't know how I only now stumbled upon this series. Of course I had to watch both videos in an instant and I love them. I am a big fan of anaytical videos, especially if they are about games or the gaming community. I played DayZ myself and I never could enjoy it completely because of the bad performance, which made me motionsick pretty fast, so I see forward to your series and see what content DayZ actually has in all the details and how the community and various updates affected the game itself. Thumbs up for this series and greetings from germany.

Jamie

It is also worth noting that i noticed it less in the second video, so maybe as you're getting more comfortable with this video style you're having to use jump cuts less.

GritzTheMarker

I don't think its necessarily any particular place, more so the frequency. Its a part of your videos, so never get rid of it entirely, especially when you're making a joke. its your style and adds to your bullshitteries, but it just doesn't flow the same when its one person talking about a subject as opposed to multiple people having a conversation over TS. keep it up, even with these being works in progress they were hugely entertaining, you colossal twat

GritzTheMarker

Sure. Thanks for the feedback. Though the speaking speed is unfortunately going to be part of it, as it's really the style, I'll try to include visual clues for some faster sections (like the lists). And also try to enunciate as clearly as possible.

SovietWomble

Will do :)

SovietWomble

Thanks! Aye, that software background becomes relevant in a later chapter. Where I talk about the development methodology they're using and how I feel they've made certain specific mistakes we're trained to avoid. I hope I get that chapter right, as it's a tricky one.

SovietWomble

Sounds good. Specifically do you know which parts of the jumps cuts you find unsatisfying? The jumps cuts will need to be part of the style, often with sentences. But in my opinion it's where the words end that I'm trying to smooth. For example, if a sentence ends of an S it's a bit of a pain to record. Or if my voice tone shifts between cuts and it's noticeable. Lots of rework. But can you think of anything else specifically that I may need to address?

SovietWomble

I feel the need to share a criticism. Its a small one, but as the only one I noticed IT IS MY DUTY TO VOICE. The jump cuts are very much a part of your style and that's fine. I just think you're so used to them in your bullshitteries that you structured your soapbox video the same way. The jump cuts are okay, just toning down on them a bit might make a bit of an improvement.

GritzTheMarker

Womble both parts were super fascinating especially with your software background. The patreon mini fridge bit got me as well. I love the different tone they have to bullshittery and im excited to see the rest

Davard

Good job so far Womble! Doing great on explaining the history of the game and what made it so damn good. Though one thing I'd like to suggest is either turning the music down a touch or making your voice a little louder. At the moment, the music is a touch loud and makes it a little hard to hear your lovely voice fully.

Emily Hendry

I've just watched the two of them, and you have done an amazing work, congrats ! If I had one (small) negative aspect to point out it's that I think you speak a bit too fast, but that can be only my impression. But that being said, these videos are really interesting, well made, and now we'll just have to wait for the next ones ! Good job Soviet !

Bastien Bonnefoy

I for one am anxious for this next Soapbox video, I myself have never played Dayz, but I really find the development of such a huge game interesting. Keep up the good work!

Leviticus Yeeticus

Personally I enjoy the videos regardless of what they are, so as long as you're having fun making them then that's the most important. They all have their own entertainment values, bullshitteries for the mindless fun, horror to see you piss yourself, etc. :D

Flan

I do like rampant cynicism! :)

SovietWomble

Aye. Though (and I know I keep mentioning it) I rather hope the soapbox ones turn out to be high-demand too. Because I'm having SO much fun making them!

SovietWomble

Yeah that's definitely understandable. Bullshitteries are what people are really following you for, for the most part.

Flan

Aye, it's been a while. A full hard drive put a stopper on that a while ago. But I have a new one now. But the demand for bullshitteries has been so much higher :)

SovietWomble

Speaking of the horror videos, any idea if/when you'll make one? Looking forward to whatever you put out either way, just thought it's been a while since a horror video.

Flan

Well, I did enjoy your rampant cynicism when you played the standalone recently on stream, so I'm looking forward to the next part!
