EARLY ACCESS - DayZ Critique 7/10

All done!  This is part 7/10 of the DayZ critique, in which I look at something I call hero "decay" as a way of explaining why games like DayZ become shoot-on-sight affairs.

These are the points I'm trying to make:

Let me know how well you think I've hit these points. And whether you find yourself super-convinced/unconvinced at certain parts. So I can make adaptions and revisions accordingly to get my points across. And thank you for the feedback and your patronage as always :)

RIght, next up...a bullshittery! Probably Arma. Not sure yet, let me have a look through the hard drives today and get back to you.

All the best,

Soviet

Wow Soviet, didn't have you down as a M.I.A fan

Bit late to the party with this update. But I really must commend you on the Westworld comparison, I had never seen the hero decay aspect in that light before and it was extremely intriguing to listen too, great installment overall. Like some others pointed out, the music at 12:22 was a tad too loud, though I assume you've heard enough of that now and are in the process of fixing it. Just thought I'd say the same to show it was universal to most people.

Yes! Still one of my favorite series. I read every book which has Raistlin in it.

FWIW, ~9:02 could potentially be a massive spoiler. That's a huge reveal in the later episodes of WW... Also, contrary to what folks are saying about the music at ~11:30-14:00, I thought it worked well. In fact, I'd almost suggest making the music continually louder until we can't hear your voice, and then do a record scratch and say "see what I mean?" Might make your point more...pointed. Other than that, excellent as always.

Soviet, i haven't seen westworld (I know I know) so I had to stop halfway through this because I didn't want any spoilers (I like going into a series knowing absolutely nothing) so I'm sorry I have nothing insightful to add. But if you need more dumb jokes for your twitch stream titles I got you. "I went to the zoo expecting to see lots of animals but there was only one. It was a shih tzu."

Is your user handle a reference to dragonlance? I loved those books when I read them ages ago

Thought it was too much to compare dayz with westworld at first but after you explained it, great video. Well done Womble, well done.

Raistlin

As somebody completely unfamiliar with DayZ, the standalone, Westworld, etc, I'm finding this series very interesting! I think you nailed all of those points except maybe this one : "Shooting on sight was also more likely in DayZ due to Arma's unforgiving engine." Do you mean that Arma's engine was unstable or something? Because I didn't get that message from the video.

MikeBurnFire

Damn Soviet I nearly got hard when you referenced Westworld.

Hey Womble, great video. The Westworld comparison is completely apt, works really well. At 19:10 where the Hero Decay definition comes back on screen, 'Phenomenon" is spelled incorrectly as 'Phenominom'. Not sure if that is present through the other. It is present in the placard at 0:39 as well. Not sure if it's intentional and I'm missing a joke or not, so figured I'd point out just in case.

These videos are really interesting to a person like me, that's never played Arma or DayZ. The Westworld comparison is on point - people eventually just turn awful. We've all seen it. Being good isn't fun when everyone else is being bad haha. Also, good job using the FF9 soundtrack for the ending there haha.

Find these videos absolutely fascinating. There used to be tonnes of great dayz-mod story videos on youtube, on peoples experiences and stories on what was happening...Which barely show up anymore. These videos is helping with understanding what happened and why. Also a little sidenote, the description of the video still have the Part 6 Link and Part 7 as "TO DO".

Wow, this is great, like really great. I absolutely agree with you. I think you did a great job explaining the concepts behind survival games. I really love this. Keep up the good work.

Gah. I must have turned it up a tad too much. I'll turn that down.

The music that starts at 11:30, is ok to begin with, but from 12:22 onwards seems too loud, especially with the gunshot sounds.
