Feedback and Half Life: Alyx - Jeff

Thank you very much for all your feedback on the last post, everyone. I promise I have read it all, even though I can't respond to everything I'm afraid. Thank you for being so understanding and supportive.

I don't necessarily want to abort the Sons of the Forest video follow up.

But I do think I should take a second stab at a script. Greatly streamlining the setup and focusing on what matters. With the goal of making it much more to the point. There's no need to try to remake another Forest video. I've done that. This one needs to be purely on the comparison/new quirk. Something to plan for the future.

For now though, with the wind taken out of my sails, I've decided to steer the ship in a fresh direction. I've made a start on 'Half Life: Alyx - Jeff only'. A project I know I can execute efficiently and have a high likelihood of making a strong delivery. And I've already been making headway.

For those unfamiliar with that, there was a segment in the VR Half Life: Alyx playthrough which became a sudden and unexpected horror/survival level in a game otherwise filled with gunplay.

It is particularly ripe for editing as its highly-immersive nature and unexpected presence led to a return of a format from the days of Alien Isolation. Frequent utterances of panic and mistakes being made under pressure, whilst a powerful creature hunts the player.

I'm hoping to edit it as a standalone episode, separate from the vods.

I'm currently going through the 3 hour livestream, identifying useful moments with the standard Adobe Premiere scrubbing tools. And I've decided not to do the usual clip system, as I can't really move things out of their context.

Once I have something watchable in a couple of days, I'll start making decisions concerning where the animated text needs to go.

So please bear with me. I'll see if I can make something entertaining with this footage and then get back to you. Thank you all.

Some things need to finish on a back burner because they need some time to simmer or marinate; that’s why stoves have back burners that don’t run as hot. It also means you can do something else without pulling everything off that’s already in progress. The analogy works well enough here as well.

Abort does ring of finality, I suppose. Rapid temporary disengagement? In any case it sounds like you have a workable solution, you’re making head[crab]way, seems to be a positive pivot.

This sounds like a fantastic project to pivot to and build up new momentum. I agree that you don't need to throw away the entire Sons of the Forest project. While there may not be the right amount of material for another full fledged video essay, there's still plenty of good content even in what you've already completed to make a smaller scale video. In the meantime, another Halflife Alyx video is really exciting!

Glad to hear you're getting back on the horse.

Good luck.

Excited to see this one! Have fun tracking all that VR footage, I know it can be a pain sometimes

Loved your entire Half-Life Alyx run and wished for an Alien: Isolation-style video because of how well you immerse yourself into stories, particularly horror. But since you've already said you'd only do the Jeff section, I'm just glad it's still top of mind. Cheers and good luck!
