[SILVER] Gundam SEED Destiny (Episode 37) "Thunder in the Dark"

Comments

It'll be interesting seeing your reactions to the next few episodes. Here's my comments for this episode: -regarding why Shinn said he got revenge for Athrun, I believe it's meant to be revenge for the Savior being destroyed by the Freedom. -In the last pair of episodes Theta mentioned he was perfectly fine with Shinn seeking revenge because that's just the human condition and part of the message of the show is "hurt people hurt people", and while Theta is correct that the show doesn't offer a definitive answer, part of the show's message is that people have to be willing to actively step out of the cycle of vengeance in order to prevent the cycle from spinning out of control and right now Shinn is guilty of contributing to the cycle instead of trying to end it. -with respect to the explosion that occurred when Shinn destroyed the Freedom, the size of explosion led many people to conclude (including me for years) that it was caused by the Freedom's nuclear reactor detonating (like how Athrun used his to destroy Genesis at the end of Season 1) and the fact that Kira not only survived that but also somehow turned off the reactor helped contribute to the Jesus Yamato Meme. What actually is supposed to happen (and I believe this was very poorly executed) the Minerva's positron cannon shot is the actual cause of the explosion and there is a single frame shot in the episode where the Minerva is turning from the explosion but traces of the positron blast still remain in the air and point directly at the explosion. -when Athrun was talking with Durandal his glancing at Meer was meant to subtlety signal to Durandal that the fake Lacus was the cause of why they didn't trust him without revealing the deception to Shinn. This was meant to demonstrate that while Athrun disagreed with what Durandal ordered and had serious doubts he was trying to understand him and why he did what he did, but all Durandal did was further gaslight Shinn by making it appear that if even Lacus supported him there must have been something wrong with the Archangel for refusing to either talk or support him. Athrun is not thinking about playing Durandal because he currently has no plans to leave Zaft and he genuinely wants to try and understand what is going on as his previous impression of the chairman has been seriously challenged. -Remember that when Athrun tried to bring Meer with him that she declared that "I'm Lacus" to Athrun and she seems to believe she is "Lacus Clyne". -Lacus has not just been "sitting around" but I can't say anything without spoiling -the beach scene Theta referenced that Athrun remembered when talking with Durandal, I believe we are supposed to understand that Athrun is remembering that he (Athrun) ignored the concerns Kira and the Archangel had about Durandal and those concerns may be valid and he was not thinking about how Kira and the others didn't listen to him. -I think Ray accusing Athrun of betraying Durandal is absurd since Athrun only acted after learning that they were planning to arrest him on false charges and likely kill him to prevent him from revealing anything inconvenient like how Meer is impersonating Lacus. -I think Athrun's survival is either tied or just behind Mu's as the worst survival in Gundam Seed as even though the Destiny's Sword didn't pierce the center of the Gouf's cockpit, the Gouf still exploded as a result and the sword was at least slightly in or adjacent to the cockpit -remember there were people in Zaft uniforms who helped Stella, Sting and Auel get to the Gundam hangar and get access. -Also, if you pay close attention to Rey's language he is clearly playing/manipulating Shinn by playing on his fears, desires, and insecurities to get him to try and kill Athrun.

Know Your Roll

This is a turning point for the series, it's interesting to reflect on how many great moments have been in the recent episodes that somehow fall flat... great buildup with empty delivery. It's worth spending time going over them before seeing the rest play out.
