The problem with importance is that requires knowledge. Certainly, I could determine which characters have names and which don't without spoilers, but not which characters appear more than once, for example. So I don't forsee any real ability to be able to make changes based on that alone.

2025-03-06 19:08:04 +0000 UTCRegarding your post-episode discussion about not knowing if you're married to a Consort. Again I'll be referring to Imperial era China for this explanation. The Concubinage traditionally resembled marriage in that concubines were recognized sexual partners of a man and expected to bear children for him. For Imperial consorts (concubines of the Emperor), there was an official system in place to select concubines, and the Imperial consorts had different ranks based on anything from beauty to diplomatic connections of their families. So while a concubine wasn't a traditional wife (unless the Emperor decides to marry one of his concubines), they were still officially recognized as "his" under law. If the Emperor ever took a wife (either one of the concubines, or to someone else), the Empress would hold the highest rank, and be the Emperor's sole legal wife, as well as the chief of the Imperial harem. Traditionally, if the Emperor is unmarried at the time of the birth of his first male heir from a consort, the Emperor would marry that consort to make her Empress. All that being said, the anime doesn't go into this much detail about it so take the above with a grain of salt when applying it to the show.

One idea to reduce clutter is move characters that you believe aren't that important, or have only appeared in a single episode, to their own section. An example would be Concubine Fuyou that was given away to that military officer in episode 3. We're at episode 9 now, so it may be safe to move them off the main grid to a side-grid. If they reappear or become plot-relevant again, you can always move them back. That won't specifically help Maomao's portrait itself running out of connections. An idea to help that would be grouping the ladies-in-waiting together by their Pavilion. For example, you have lines from Maomao going to Hongming, Ailan, Yinghua, and Guiyuan. That's 4 dark green lines that could feasibly be made into a single line that then breaks off to the 4 ladies-in-waiting. The only reason to have them have their own line would be if at some point one of their relationship to Maomao changes to warrant a different color. You could do something similar with the High Consorts themselves. You have a light green line going from Maomao to Gyokuyou, and then another to Lihua. You could group those two into a single light green line.
