Yeah, why I put a "100% Wrong" over my camera when I said Thunderbolt was next, lol. Honestly, what we'll prolly do... as is the way we tend to do things around here... is just watch ALL of it, lol.

2025-05-28 20:32:47 +0000 UTCI know Thunderbolt isn’t next but since it was brought up at the end, I thought I should mention this since it’s near. There are 2 versions of Thunderbolt. The first version is the 4 episode ONA 2015 release. Then there’s the 2016 film compilation version, which is the best way to experience Thunderbolt and I’ll explain why without spoilers. Back in 2014, Sunrise had just finished a four year OVA project, with each episode being over an hour long. The studio in charge of that show were incredibly exhausted and looking to work on something a lot shorter for their next anime adaptation. So in 2015, Sunrise Studio 1 decided to adapt a successful manga series from around that time and that was Gundam Thunderbolt. This time though, they were gonna approach this project a little differently. They decided to make it an ONA (Original Net Animation) that would be significantly shorter than their last project, making Thunderbolt only 4 episodes long with each episode being around 15 minutes long (same episode count and runtime for S2 of the ONA, so overall a total of 8 episodes were made). Sunrise released the ONA only in Japan during 2015 through an online paying service and its reception was much greater than what Sunrise had planned for. They immediately began to work on a re-release for theaters and to expand the anime into the west by including a dub since Thunderbolt never released overseas and all we had were fan translations. With that in mind, Sunrise released the compilation film 2016 with a new title, Mobile Suit Gundam December Sky. This version would make improvements over the ONA release, with them fixing animations errors, adding more variety to the soundtrack, and creating new gorgeous animation scenes that are only be available for the film. The compilation film also doesn’t cut out anything, you get the whole ONA experience and more. Seriously nothing cut out. The ONAs released without OPs or EDs due to Sunrise trimming down on time, so you won’t miss out on that. Also, no re-contextualization like the 0079 trilogy either, everything stays the same. The compilation films are also the only version that’s available when trying to watch or buy Thunderbolt since Sunrise took down the ONA versions, making them unavailable for purchase, and completely replaced it with the movies, since it’s the most accessible version to people outside of Japan and it’s also their definitive version due to the improvements they made. Hence, it’s also the version most people are familiar with since the ONAs had a short run online before being replaced. The second part/season of the ONA release went through the exact same thing with Sunrise creating a compilation movie for that called Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt Bandit Flower in 2017. Damn, long post but I just had to let you know about the film version since Thunderbolt is a really unique entry for the UC timeline and it’s also Sunrise’s last anime project that’s completely hand drawn, with some extra beautiful work available only in the films. I truly think Thunderbolt December Sky (2016) & Thunderbolt Bandit Flower (2017) are the way to best way to experience Thunderbolt’s chaotic worldview.
