I have to disagree with you that the show doesn't address Rudy's detachment from his parents. He clearly says, "It makes me sad how little I loved my parents back then." And he says later to Roxy, "I've made more of the same mistakes I can't take back again." Referring to how he treated his parents in this life and the last. So he is obviously regretting his actions and reflecting on his detachment from his parents in his past life and this one. And I know you hadn't seen it at this point but the last scene Rudy says, "But I think of myself as Paul Greyrat's son now." Showing his growth towards Paul's relationship, even though he is already dead. I also really love the last line, "I've realized I was still a kid, just a brat using old memories to act grown-up." it recontectualizes the whole idea that he's an old man in a child's body. That's what he thought of himself and it wasn't really true. But it explains his inner voice and his perspective up until that point.
