COMPO_1

(Update, rescheduled to Saturday, Nov 25th!)

Hey gang!

The first monthly COMPO will be on November 25th at noon PST.  COMPOs are basically track/beat-making challenges based on certain rules. Typically the main rule is that you can only use the samples included in the compo sample pack, and the competition is usually on a short time limit (2-3 hours). All submissions are anonymous and only the compo moderator knows the identity behind each track.

I will also be taking part in the COMPO live on YouTube and streaming the entries. There will be public voting via social media (Discord, YouTube, Twitter, etc). The winning song will be featured on my SoundCloud along with various other prizes.

Some context on where this idea came from: Recently, I’ve been tapping into my origins of music production and community by looking back on my past experiences with trackers and the tracker community.  As you may or may not know, my most recent EP is dedicated to #trax, a channel on IRC (EFNET specifically).  I spent quite a lot of time in this channel in the '90s and early 2000s. It was a place for people to trade their tracks (usually in IT, XM, or s3m format), give feedback, collaborate, start netlabels, and throw competitions called COMPOs (a term created within the demoscene if my memory serves me correctly. More on the demoscene later).

Someone would announce something along the lines of “compo in #compofuntime tomorrow at noon” or something like that, people would join, the mod would stipulate the rules/time limit, post the zip file with the samples, and then the compo would begin.  After the time limit was up everyone would send their submissions to the mod and the mod would post a zip with all the entries making sure they were anonymous. Everyone would vote on their fave, I’m pretty sure you know how competitions work lol.

Anyhow, I’m very excited to start doing these monthly! As a patron, your vote will have more weight and other perks that will give you an advantage (extra time, additional samples, exclusion of rules, etc). More details soon x

See you Nov 25th!

most likely the same day! the fun of it is seeing what everyone can do with the same sounds/constraints in a short amount of time

What’s the timeline going to be for submissions? Are they going to be due to the same day?

I've just had a weekend open up and have moved this to November 25th :)
