NEW VIDEO: 3 Reasons Why Marijuana Should Stay Illegal
Added 2018-06-10 12:30:27 +0000 UTC
Hey Patrons! New video for you, this time about the cons of Marijuana legalization. We wanted to take a fair look at counter arguments in depth and see how they hold up in review.
Unfortunately the video was immediately demonized by Youtube, which means there will be little to no ad revenue from it – and there is nothing we can do about it.
As you may guess we did take the project very seriously and worked for months and months to make a fair and fact based video, that hopefully also educates and changes a few minds.
We included most of our extensive research in the pinned comment under the video, if you want to take a look at our sources!
It is a bit discouraging to have your work devalued like this, especially since all the big media companies have easy ways to just avoid this happening to them. Sometimes Youtube does feel like an unsafe place to do your work and today is one of these days.
While we did get financial support from FUNK for this video, we did factor in things like ads for the English video to cover the costs of production.
This does not feel great if you are responsible for the salaries of such a great team. Real people with real lives work on these videos.
All of this makes me feel intense gratitude for your guys and your support here. Your help on Patreon gives us the security to not let our topics be dictated by advertisers but what feels right.
Thank you so much for that. -Philipp
Anyone know where I can find the sources of this video?
Please help, I will appreciate it very much);

If it's "a street drug" it's illegal. If it's a money-maker for companies and investors: it's medicine. It's good to see this shown in this video. People never use drugs for "benefits" or health improvement. They use them to get high.

Stupid idea. The title is likely to anger rather than intrigue the potential viewer.

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that this video got demonetized. Just know that this only guarantees that I won't be quitting my pledge to you guys since we need more people to become curious about science and critical thinking!

I hadn't noticed until now how much the words "demonetized" and "demonized" have in common.

Loved the video, and enjoyed the phrasing of the title, quite brave really, brings in the opposing side and makes their assertions, then dissects it. Cleverclogs!

Another great video. And it didn’t even mention the war on drugs which is lost and generates so much social unrest and crime. Well you did make a video about that which was awesome too.

The potency argument is fairly debunked; prior to the 90s, officials tested entire loads, without taking care to isolate the resin or buds like users would. What this means is that the drug isn't stronger, just that preparation has gotten better. A purchased ounce takes less preparation to use than before, not that it's more strong. It's ready to smoke instead of needing to be pinched and concentrated. That undermines many of the points made in the video.

Really great video, with nuance. I am disappointed by the clickbait title. You want people on both sides to watch? Then give a neutral title, for instance: "About Cannabis Legalization". YouTube want to avoid being accused to monetize on controversial topics. I guess the keyword "cannabis" was the trigger. In Switzerland, only cannabis with extremely limited THC is illegal, you can get as much CBD as you want.

Great video. Despite my opinion about how approach this topic in my personal life, for public decisions and politics a rational and research based discussion is needed. It would be awesome if you guys go deep in the negative effects of marijuana too or maybe talk about how Uruguay is doing with his legalization policy, does marijuana has a social impariment effect? maybe talk about the neurobiology of the 'reward' circuity of the ventral limbic stream in the basal ganglia. I think so much more can be said in this important topic. As always, thanks for your top notch videos.

If you mean the title is, then yes. But I would rather it be a clickbait to garner more views since Marijuana is a touchy subject especially in the West. I agree that Marijuana should be legal when more potent, commercially available drugs like smoking and alcohol are available. However, there should be rehabilitation facilities to allow addicts to treat themselves and get better.
Overall, society's mindset has to change if we want progress.

"Legalizing marijuana doesn't mean endorsing it, it's accepting responsibility for the risk it poses" is the best part of this entire video. I support legalization, but as a pharmacist, I'm sick of pro-legalization groups who downplay the very real problems marijuana does cause, because (1) it's intellectually dishonest and (2) that also creates problems of public perception when we gets around to actually drafting sensible legislation.

Video is quite misleading - it doesn't have clear solid conclusion. Maybe we need to emphasize that Marijuana should be legal, but responsibility should be on user or that it should be illegal, but then claim that responsiblity on producer/distributor

This was a risky approach for you! As a stoner who is kind of undecided how I feel about my country standing on the brink of marijuana legalization, thank you for this thought provoking video. You exposed new angles that take seriously the possible harms and the unknowns of widespread legal pot use. Thank you!

I liked this video.... “There is no innocuous drug”. This issue involves many other aspects on discussion specially about the level education of the country and economic development. It is looong topic for talk.
Very good, Philip and team! 🙂👍

It was a good video, but I can see why it was demonetized. Advertisers do not want any of their products or services to be associated with any issue that can be seen as controversial. The reality is that YouTube as a service costs a fortune to run. YouTube needs ad revenue to maintain its existence. While this may be damaging to those providing content, YouTube is hoping that content providers will realign to the new reality to keep from being demonetized. We shall see if this pans out for them.

When I first read your statement I saw "demonized" and immediately thought... oh, youTube commenters must really LIKE the idea of marijuana legalization and so they must have torn this video apart. Upon actually watching the video (which, as I suspected, is largely PRO-legalization) and re-reading your comment... you probably meant *demonetized. But that still leaves the original question... WHYYYYY, tho?!

Did you mean to say the video was "demonized" by youTube, as in commenters didn't like it... or that it was demonetized by youTube the company itself?

The idea is to specifically reach people who are against decriminalization and to take them seriously. There is an abundance of pro arguments and content on the internet and while they are correct, they tend to marginalize the negative effects of smocking weed. So we wanted to show that you can be convinced that nobody should smoke and still support a public policy approach that protects more people than keeping it illegal. We knew that we would get a lot of flag for that but that is part of the philosophy of the channel. Sometimes it is annoying to hear things that don't match what we already think. Researching our videos in depth often does the same thing to us. In this case I think it is more important to reach people who would not have watched a video that is obviously pro liberalization.

Great video, even though the title is a little .. risky and misleading. It could have been a little less 'offensive' by saying "Discussing 3 reasons why.." or something like that. But eh.. happens^^
Looks like Youtube has even less mercy than Kötzbröcken. Then again, looking at the Youtube comment section, this sure falls under the category "controversial content" - can't sell a beer ad on that. Though it's quite fascinating to see people clearly comment before watching the video.
[Edit]: Wait what.. Youtube (Germany) actually showed me an ad in front of the video when I loaded it again o_O

Wonderful video. It made me rethink all the stuff about legalisation. Sometimes laws have to be inconsistent with each other for the greater good. About the title, some people say it's a bait and switch mislead. I think it's genius. People who enter the video trying to reassure their antidrug believes will turn their heads with well-presented facts and information. Can confirm, happened to me.

Great video.
What I don't get though is why title is misleading?
It feels like there is some special intent with that title I can't exactly see, but anyway it kinda feels wrong. If you guys are about clarity, truth, understanding, than you should be above these kind of 'games'.

Just curious, does a Youtube channel get Youtube Red revenue even if it's "unsuitable for advertisers"? Or is it demonetized completely? which would feel very unfair if advertisers have that much control over a non-ad-based source of revenue.
