NEW VIDEO: Is Organic Really Better? Healthy Food or Trendy Scam?

Organic food is a huge trend: it promises a healthier and better life. But can Organic food really live up to the expectations or is it just baloney?

Regarding the effect on humans, the WHO subdivison IARC did a study on the effects of Glyphosate on humans https://monographs.iarc.fr/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/mono112-10.pdf Which does not contradict the claim from you Debbie, I would agree there is no conclusive evidence that residue on food can cause cancer in humans (to quote you "safe for people in the quantities we consume it") but the IARC has found evidence that farm workers that are exposed to it in larger doses have developed cancers and that cancer development was linked to Glyphosate.

Timonsku

Well then lets start with some studies: https://www.pnas.org/content/115/41/10305

So maybe local organic in season is the best?

jessica feinleib

this is so intestin I am writing a book abot space !

Ollie Callan

How does GMO fit into the picture? Does it offer any significant advantages/disadvantages over conventional or organic agriculture?

Programmable Spacecraft

Well put! Land use is a very important consideration.

Programmable Spacecraft

Neonicotinoids are used in Australia and they do not have a problem with colony collapse disorder. Neonics can harm bees, as can many insecticides. The application methods for Neonics may actually protect bees. Glyphosate has not been implicated in colony collapse disorder, either. But the worst thing about the bee crisis is that there really isn't a problem with the bees that pollinate our crops. The number of this type of bee is at an all time high. Rather, it is the bees that do not pollinate crops that are in danger - mostly due to loss of habitat to homes and farmland. Organic production uses more farmland for the same output and so it is more harmful this way.

Debbie Mansperger

Organic farms, at least in the US, are allowed to use pesticides - some of which are more harmful to people and the environment than man-made pesticides.

Debbie Mansperger

The chemicals harming bees are the neonicotenoids, not glyphosate. Aargh! Please get the facts right, unless the real facts are what would impede the advancement of your conspiracy theory (as appears to be the case here).

Mordecai Glicksman

And is more land being used for organic production necessarily a bad practice? The more open space, ( read areas of lesser development, i.e. farmland), available, the more citizens can be out in nature, visiting a farmstand, picking produce at the local CSA, or just seeing open countryside as they pass along the road. Greenhouse gasses aren't the only form of pollution.

Ruth Cole

Unfortunately I find this video misleading. You don't consider the farm workers who are doused with pesticides when working on conventional farms.

Ruth Cole

They already did this video in German months ago

CJ Canton

Love this video, great choice of topic. I'll be buying more local seasonal veg.

Benjamin Rusholme

Agreed. They also have a separate (and thorough) video about the meat industry that covers how the label organic interacts with animal welfare.

TC Safavi

We are already using most of the arable land for farming. Organic massively increases land use. Let's not destroy the Amazon (the jungle, not the company) and wipe out wildlife refuges to indulge this latest fad. When the fad is over the animals are still gone.

Mike Spalding

What bothered me most though was the weak definition of organic and basically putting vastly different methods of agriculture into one bowl even though they have a completely different impact on the planet. Some of the facts mentioned about "organic" farming are plain out false for certain methods that are considered to be "organic". This insanely broad and weak definition is just not applicable across the globe. It goes similar with conventional farming, although the industry is much more aligned in that regard due to a few large corporations that supply the tools and consumables but still, local regulations differ vastly as well for conventional farming.

Timonsku

But even if there is a large scientific stack of unbiased studies on the issue that prove that glyphosate is absolutely harmless to everything besides the specific pests it targets then that should have definitely found its way into the video.

Timonsku

I'm not talking about its safety for humans (though I have yet to see studies that have not received funding from the industry). The biggest concern is with bees where it has been proven that glyphosate has a very negative impact on.

Timonsku

Many good points, but I also suggest watching Food, Inc (on Netflix) for other takes on legal and ecological issues surrounding GMOs, as well as the issues of the over use of antibiotics (which I believe Kurzgesagt covered in another video but would've been good to mention here) in large scale meat packing, not to mention the conditions animals and workers are subjected to at such facilities.

Brandon Barker

I enjoyed this (as I always do). Thanks!

evistre

Because glyphosate has been shown time and time again to be safe for people in the quantities we consume it. Your real concern should be about organophosphates and organochlorides, which are highly toxic, but are making a strong comeback in agriculture around the world (because people have been brainwashed by Big Organic to be frightened of glyphosate).

Mary Severinghaus

I'm quite sad that you left out so many important topics for this video. How can you talk about pesticide use and not mention things like Glyphosat? Then the whole issue of generalizing the word Organic for the whole globe.

Timonsku

As a food scientist, I'm super glad this video was made. Thank you!

Lily Yang

Great job everyone, I'm so glad to be backing this, you guys are all awesome human beings in my book.

Anders Olesen

Thanks!

Miy Eterp

Yea. I'd love that!

Marc Hadel

Whilst legitimate, they did put up a notice saying they were only going to be talking about veggies.

Victor Domen

Need video about the pros and cons of the American MOAB!

Miy Eterp

Would be good to mention the animal welfare argument for organic food

Tim Hewison

Please make the future Mars Colonisation video?!
