A Calendar for the Year 12,017 – Limited Edition. Secret Patron Version
Added 2016-12-05 21:28:13 +0000 UTC
Dear Patrons. We did something special and since it is limited we want to let you know two days in advance. (We trust you that you don’t post this anywhere on social media until Wednesday.)
So in two days a new video will be out. The topic is „A new history for humanity“. It is about a new year 0 for our history. A new way to think about the collective past of our species.
The fact that we live in the year 2000+ always rubbed me the wrong way. From a historic perspective, 2000 years ago is a weird time to start a counting years. The roman empire already existed for hundreds of years, the pyramids were already thousands of years old. And human development had kicked of much earlier when agriculture started.
Also the whole BC and AD part makes thinking about history unnecessarily hard. And of course it is very western centric.
So based on the holocene calendar we created a new year 0 for humanity. 12,000 years ago. We don’t need to create new months or days for that – we can simply add 10,000 years to our calendar. This makes our current year the year 12,016.
Doesn’t this feel very different and more special? Isn’t our journey as a collective much more impressive? If we start counting 12,000 years ago instead of 2,000 years ago the process we made is much, MUCH more impressive. Living in the year 12,016 is also so much cooler than the year 2016.
I don’t want to spoil the video for you so I won’t talk about the reason we put the year 0 where we put it. It will make a lot of sense once you see it in two days, promise!
ANYWAYS! We did something new:
We produced a calendar for the year 12,017. Fully illustrated, on high quality paper and with some neat facts about human development. Days and months are just like a regular 2017 calendar so you can actually use it too. Illustrations are made in a way that you can cut them out if you so desire.
Producing it was a scary high financial investment so we only did a limited run. When it is gone, it is gone (if contrary to our expectations demand is extremely high we might produce a second run. But for now I think that once this is sold out, this will be it.)
That’s why we are telling you two days in advance because you are our biggest supporters and we want you guys to have one if you want one.
You can order it here at https://store.dftba.com/products/human-era-calendar
It is $25 and it will arrive in time for christmas!
As always, thanks for your support and we sincerely hope this will be a regular thing in the future and we might reframe history a tiny bit : )
-Philipp
Edit: Unfortunately we had to produce the thing in the US (made sense because most of our viewers live in North America) so shipping to Europe is not sadly not exactly cheap.
Love this Calender, but why is it only available in the US. Please give some attention to your German fans aswell, fellows.

Never mind the shipping costs. I got the calendar, shipping costs be damned! :D Best of all: You’re using "European" date format (or weeks), starting the week on monday, which is only proper! :)

I ordered one today. Shiping cost is high ok. But for some regions it will always be high.
I have only one thing I am not happy with:
I'm living in switzerland, so often I have to pay VAT to the customs. I hope, the shiping will go trough without, it is sharp at the amount were it could happen. The problem is not the VAT itself, that is 8%. But the declarence cost could be high. Here I pay around $20.- for that if shipping comes from the "normal" post. In that case it should have shipped with USPS. But privat carriers charge often around $50.-.
I will not complain, I want the calender and ordered with knowledge of that. I hope also, that it gets a bit of income for kurzgesagt. And some regions have always problem with shipping or custom if you are international known.
But I could imaging that the normal post is often cheaper in clearance taxes because it is in many countries under goverment rule. Also it is at least here easier for a privat person who works to collect there sendings if money is involved, because there have more offices.
This should be only thoughs for a next project, not a complain.

The design is still awesome though.

Lets be totally honest and open. Patreon really is about supporting creators. It is like a voluntary subscription with a bonus. Even with „only“ one time rewards we spend multiple days each month producing them, sending them out, answering messages etc. This is not complaining, it is totally worth it for us and has completely changed the way we produce content! For example we were able to do two videos each in November and December. More than ever before. This is what we are able to give back to you guys as supporters: More and better content!
The calendar was a risk for us – we invested a few weeks and a lot of money paying the production up front. We need to sell a third of all the calendars to break even – even if we sell out completely, we won’t make huge amounts of money. We didn’t know about the shipping costs up front to be honest, that kind of escaped us. If you think it is too expensive no problem at all! It is just an extra thing we did because we thought it was cool. If it works out maybe we’ll do it again with better pricing, if not then this is a one time thing.

I bought it. Shipping costs are shipping costs (the joys of living outside US and EU). I won’t even think about printing it myself. What for? I have a B/W printer, using regular A4 paper. Here I get a nice full color large calendar on nice thick glossy paper nicely bound. At least the ducky guys get USD 25, can’t help the fact that the Snail Mail takes another USD 12. NOK 100 is about two beers in a bar, so it’s survivable. :)

I must join some others in saying that, even if I was willing and ready to pay the 25$ for the calendar (which is really awesome), I stopped as soon as I saw that delivery costed 14$. I know it's not up to you and that you must not lose from printing it, but I think that you can see how 40$ for a calendar is a little expensive. Maybe you could make it available in a pdf version for, idk, 5/10$? That would be cool too.
I'm not going anywhere in the meantime ;)

As Patrons, I wish we could have gotten it for free and in a digital version, to print ourselves or something. 25$ + shipping is 39$. I love your content guys but not up to that point, and I feel like us patrons don't get rewarded that much for supporting you

With shipping to Germany it would be $40 (2-6 weeks) or over a hundred dollars for premium delivery. 😶 I like the idea of the calendar very much, but up to over a hundred dollars are a little too expensive.

Looks great, though shipping is a bit steep ($10 to the US) but since it is a limited run, I decided to get it anyways

Do you guys ship worldwide?

Agree with the others... shipping over here (Hong Kong) cost me more than half the calendar's price... I remember that previously there is a poster of earth, is there any chance that the design will restock? Buying 2 items do help saving the shipping cost.

Bought two (one for home, one for kids' school) and saved some on shipping. This one will be a collector's item since so many are passing up on expensive shipping. Maybe next year they'll sell through a company that has bundled shipping (Amazon) or free-to-store shipping for online orders.

Shipping cost too high for germany. I want 2 and it would be 25$ for shipping, so 75 in total? No sorry that is way too much :/. sad.
2016-12-05 23:37:17 +0000 UTC
Shipping to munich, germany is 14$ for one 25$ for two, 28 for three 42$ for four 44$ for five.
Someone in munich wanna share shipping costs? I'll order.

Sadly, the shipping fees to DK cost as much as the product itself while they still require between 2 to 6 weeks to deliver..

Shipping with UPS is WAY to expensive... Wanted to order the calender and shirt... But $16.50 for slow shipping? Nope, sorry... You should ship locally from Europe to European customers...
