NEW VIDEO: Is Reality Real? The Simulation Argument

Hey everybody! New video and it is also a collab with Vsauce3. Tried a few new things here : ) Now that we had two more speculative videos in a row, next week we'll go super legit serious science again, with one of our favorite topics: Biology. Until then, thank you for your support : )

Also... the 12,018 Calendar will be available soon, Patreons will be the first people able to order it! : )

NEW VIDEO: Is Reality Real? The Simulation Argument

Comments

maybe you guys just don't get American humor...

Andrew iLLadelph267

Hi, I just started to support you, but have to admit that I wouldn't if all your videos had live-action & over-emphasised punch lines, like this video. Just a personal opinion, but I really love the original Kurzgesagt style. On the other hand, I do appreciate links to other science channels. I think that is a good collaboration which allows viewers to choose the presentations they prefer.

I have to agree I find this a step in the wrong direction too - the reason I watch Kurzgesagt videos are 1.) you get to the point quickly 2.) they are beautiful 3.) there are no forced jokes. Take a look at any science youTube vlogger (such as Vsauce3 or Veritasium) and their videos are longer, they take some time until they prove their point, and very likely they often employ unnecessary jokes (I find them very stupid most of the time, but that is a personal preference) like the one with tripping over the cable you had in this video. What I love about you is that you don't employ this kind of narration. You are unique. You get to the point, you stay away from weak jokes (maybe Americanised jokes too as I see them mostly in American vlogger videos), you are more like paragons of science videos - high quality, straight to the point, no clichés. Stay that way!

Was going to comment on this, instead you wrote exactly what i felt. I love the fact you guys collaberated, but seeing a real person in your (kurzgesagt) videos was very distracting (atleast for me).

Really cool video. This is one of those things that are difficult to comprehend and I think you guys did a great job at explaining it. Keep making cool videos.

I love your videos, always so thought provoking. However, I also love your style. I can appreciate yhe novelty of a guest appearance yet something seemed off. Your videos are very engaging and I think part of that is due to the artistic style and personable characters. Having a live action person really threw me for a loop, I think you would have more success animating your guest (or animating their narration) rather than just have them speak at the camera. A small note and really "everyones a critic". You could completely ignore me and your videos would still be great! I just enjoy your style so much that seeing live actions was a tad disappointing.

Mathematically... Everything is possible.

the only way it could be tested would be by coding something in the simulation. XD but if we begin to play with the settings of the simulation we would be treated as failed simulation and most likely be restarted to a sooner point to put us back on track. XD i really have fun thinking about those things like the quantum suicide hypothisis, it's just a brain game for me and i don't understand how someone can get serious about these

People are treating simulation theory like it's their religion. I keep hearing people tell me that it's just math; we're so statistically likely to be in a simulation that we must be. I don't hear enough people saying that this is just a thought experiment and a hypothisis (that can't be tested). These videos are great, but I wish there was more mention of the aforementioned. Sience involves being able to say "I don't know" and you definitely don't know we're living in a simulation. It's highly possible civilizations are always destroyed before they can reach this level of computing power; it's possible that there is some fundimental principal we haven't discovered that proves this wrong. I'm not saying it is wrong, but a lot of you (not all) are treating this like it's an absolute.

I love the topic but I found the mixed style jarring. I couldn’t finish the video just because it felt distracting. If you do collabs, maybe make your guests come in as animations in your style instead.

I can't believe all these negative comments. I love all the Vsauce channels and have been watching them since before Kurz. Jake Roper has a great attitude for making topics like this intriguing to a wider audience than the more studious minded approach taken here. I don't think his inclusion took away from the quality at all. I feel it improved it and provided a splash on the topic with his different personalities and mannerisms. This channel does try to be as objective as possible, so having a guest helps provide that objectivity through differing perspectives. Did you people even watch Jake's video as well? Who cares about the narrative pace? If anything, changing it up brings a further dynamic to the video that allows it to be understood from different angles. The information is what counts. If anything I think it made the video better. Looking forward to more collabs in the future. Maybe you could try to get something going with Veritaseum or Matt over at PBS SpaceTime. tl;dr Loved the collab. Great work. Ignore the hate

Andrew iLLadelph267

I agree as well. If you collaborate with other people, please make sure you maintain your style. Your collaboration with Wait But Why worked much better. This is so bad, I disliked your video. Please don't do it again. Ever!

Jonas Peter

Agree with above, narration felt very weird with the cut ins by Vsauce3. I have nothing against collaborations and can see how it can diversify things but maybe make it could be more separate so that those who don't find it to their taste can... skip it. Fun choice of topic though!

Dominic

I agree that these sort of live video snippets and weird comments do not belong to Kurzgesagt style. It would be great to see Kurzgesagt maintaining its unique style - thought through and clean. I really like V-sauce but he doesn't make a good combo, sorry guys

This was definitely your weakest video. I found the narration didn't guide well through the topic, it was rather confusing. And please do not mix your beautiful animation with some green screened real world footage. All together it felt like this one was produced in a rush and feels somewhat unfinished. I hope the next one will return to the high quality that makes your channel special.

Do you really need to simulate every brain for an adequate simulator? I mean take the Sims for example, the paper boy doesn't really think much because he doesn't need to. Maybe once we talk to him he becomes conscious at the same level as we. In other words for one totally conscious being you couldn't put 10 half conscious people around him and 100 complete filler characters. Every filler character can become half or fill conscious. How could you tell anyway if everyone is fully conscious?

Ezydenias

"Oh no. I think I just unplugged the simulation. But what if that doesn't matter. What if we are in one right now? What if _you_ are simulated?" This made me cringe. Lines like this don't belong in Kurzgesagt videos.

"...the 12,018 Calendar will be available soon..." - Awesome. I've always wanted to go 'back to the future' from 2017 to 12,018. ;-)

Norm

That...was jarring. The sudden appearance of VSauce was almost jump-scary. Please please go back to regular videos without that sort of thing.

Taryn Terjeson

Add another voice against the vsauce inclusion. I watch your videos for their unique take, not the same thing everyone else does. Not a fan of this one, emotive "vloggers" like him and the other vsauce channels are fine for some, but I find their content lacking in information, and aimed at an uneducated or unintelligent audience. You guys should be transparent, at least to your supporters, about any compensation you received or gave for this collaboration.

Richard @ 42Fab

love Kurzgesagt, love VSauce, loved this video!

Cool concept and video, but was not a fan of the change in narrative pace introduced by VSauce, and found it slightly distracting. Fun people explaining science in simple terms are relatively common on youtube, whereas kurzgesagt animations are a bit of a one of a kind.

Pedro Matos

One of my firm beliefs is that this is totally possible. Receive some of my probably simulated thanks for this video again kg !

Topic is great and I like your videos, but I feel that (1) the treatment of the topic was not very elaborate or solid, and (2) the quality of the animation suffered with the choppy/blurred added VSauce guy (3) the pace of narration was weird when the narration switched to VSauce guy. If you folks do more of these collabs, I'd encourage you to not compromise the quality of the production.

I only just realized you guys do 60fps uploads... life changing. Is it possible to upload at high than 60FPS for those of us with high refresh displays?

Ryder

I love this theory! Great video. 😀👍

Marvellous video, one of the best of you I watched so far!

Pyo Heliobros

I understand that partnering with Vsauce or other popular channels helps you grow. I really hope that we don't start seeing talking heads become a regular feature of Kurzgesagt. Great video, keep up the amazing work!
