NEW VIDEO: How Bacteria Rule Over Your Body – The Microbiome
Added 2017-10-05 12:39:34 +0000 UTC
This video was a lot of fun to research and to do. We might explore the world of microbes in much more detail next year!
Also the 12,018 Calendar will be available next week. There will be a special newsletter for it, you can subscribe to it here: http://eepurl.com/cRUQxz
Hi, Duck! I just rewatched this episode, and I’d like to echo Dani’s objection above regarding referring to autism as a “disease”.
I’m autistic myself, and the use of medical deficit-based language is something that’s quite distressing to people in the autism community. Essentially, it’s not fun to be told that we’re broken or defective or lesser - that there’s something wrong with us.
There’s an alternate perspective we call neurodiversity that suggests autism (among other things) is a natural variation on human neurology, and that the whole world benefits from having a rich variety in the kinds of minds in society. It fits in well with the social model of disability too - a hugely interesting topic but probably a bit much for an already lengthy comment!
Anyway, this is something that autism researchers and other circles are still catching onto - it’s no huge surprise that you guys were unaware of the extended implications. You’ve got a passionate fan in me regardless!

I don't want to speak for the creators, but I'm not sure why they would want to?
Seriously, I have a 4k TV (55") hooked up to my gaming rig computer. I used that to watch this video, at no point did I look at the large flat colors and think "Man this needs more detail".
Like the whole point of the video is to be something that can shared and easily watched on a phone. If the video includes some tidbit that needs a 4k screen to see, the video has lost its way.

Are 4K videos something that have been considered?

We will do that, thanks! : )

Thank you for your response, however you didn't refer to it as a disorder (which would have been more appropriate than disease). Regardless, I may not be the best reference as I am not autistic myself. You could contact someone like Amythest Schaber who hosts "Ask an Autistic", or any other autism-positive groups/pages/resources. In the meantime, perhaps something without a negative connotation, such as "condition", might be a better bet. Who knows, perhaps some day you will be making a video about autism and how it might just be the future of human evolution. Other than this faux pas, we have experienced nothing but enjoyment from your videos, keep up the excellent work.

Both of these things are annoying, trying to fix it. Thank you!

I'm sorry, we were not aware that calling autism a disease or disorder was disputed or could hurt feelings of relatives! What do you think should we call it in a context like this? Just in case something like this comes up in the future?

I have to agree with Dani, the rhetoric that autism is somehow a disease in need of correction fundamentally devalues autistic individuals, by implying that they are somehow in need of "fixing." It's just a different way of being, and I don't think that it being "not a desirable condition" is a universal experience.

2 things:
* Isn't insulin resistance the problem for people with diabetes? So wouldn't a transplant from a healthier person lessen the resistance rather than increase it? (Else, why would you want to do it?)
* There is someone commenting on this video on Youtube with the name ".Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell" that is pretending to be you and trying to get people to click on some link, saying it's a bonus. They're flooding responses to people with this. At least one commenter says it's a virus. You may want to block them.

Because it's a neurological difference, and there's nothing wrong with being autistic. I'm sure being an asshole causes problems throughout life and is not a desirable condition, but it's not considered a disease.

It's not a desirable condition and causes problems throughout life. How is that not a disease?

I love your videos, so does my autistic daughter. So you can imagine how I might have felt when you referred to autism as "a serious disease". Next time, please use different language as autism is not a disease, and is not something to be cured.

I think you might not be up to date on the latest research on the sterility of the placenta: https://www.nature.com/news/bacteria-found-in-healthy-placentas-1.15274
Other than that, great video! Thank you <3
