The Art of Homeopathy - Gentle Healing or Reckless Fraud?
Added 2018-02-22 14:14:55 +0000 UTC
Homeopathy is immensely popular, but also very controversial. What is behind this treatment method?
So this means you will move resources (manhours) from the English channel to the German one? :(

I don’t mind videos exclusively narrated in German language. I would just ask to have subtitles in English. Does YouTube provide automatic translation that works with your videos?

Oh dear, memories from watching Don't Hug Me I'm Scared videos just resurfaced at 5:40! Let's agree to never think creatively again...

Cool! Will you guys put english subtitles on it? For me it wouldn't even need an english version if it has the subtitles

I'm curious whether animations are altered for the german video given the differences in the length to say a phrase is different. My guess is that it's easier to alter the script, and probably shorten when necessary. I noticed one bit is different in the german homeopathy - no mention of a black hole created between the earth and sun. (I speak a little german)
When writing, are there considerations made in the script for the german translation?

The german videos are under another channel, and so far anyway are not exclusive to the german channel so there are english versions available.

I had never heard of Homeopathy before. Please make your introduction a bit clearer for something that maybe very popular in one country, but it’s unheard of in another.

My spouse got a NASA job because she had art and animation in her network engineer and computer development background! Art used to be part of STEM, when hand made sketches and representations were considered part of the curriculum.

That indeed explains it. Thank you

How about a video on putting the A in STEM. Many people are pushing for more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) in education while discouraging STEAM (adding Art to the curriculum) because they think Art has nothing to do with the other four fields. Yet many scientists (mostly those who have an artistic hobby or training) say that Art greatly expands and aids science.

Maybe we should have phrased it differently. This has nothing to do with Patreon. The German public broadcast is giving us extra resources to make *more* stuff that we will publish first in German and then in english after a few months. Without their funds we could never afford to do anything in German or any other language because it costs us so much time (and money because we have to pay for new recordings etc)

Just because China claims to have ancient healing arts doesn't make it any more or less bullshit than homeopathy. After all these culture still consume gutter oil and rhino horn.

Once it's established, yes. Right now most of the people I know who do serious "alternative" medicine advocate practices (behaviors, diet, lifestyle modifications) as "alternative" to taking pills. Certainly the benefits of improved diet and exercise are rapidly being incorporated into traditional Western medical practice but too many people still equate "pills" and "medicine" as one and the same.

Well, "alternative" medicine that works is usually called "medicine" :)

Love the video, as always. One question though: Why not provide reliable subtitles?
You guys have so many fans and Patrons that I am sure you could easily get good subtitles by just releasing the video to a closed group of volunteers a few days prior.

Cancer researcher here. A surprising number of real drugs come from "herbal" sources with the best example being Taxol/Paclitaxel. Cytarabine, doxorubicin, daunorubicin are other examples from my field of leukaemia. I still sneer at people who swear blindly by 7 herbs and spices rather than medicines but the plant world can't be ignored as a source for medicines.

I should add that alternative medicine also includes herbal medicine, much of which is derived from Chinese practice. I'm not any sort of expert in that, but talking to people who are they find it extremely frustrating that their practice is confused with homeopathic bullshit.

The biggest problem with this video is you constantly mispronounce "bullshit". The second-biggest is that you confuse charlancy with alternative medicine. The latter involves using non-drug regimens and emphasizes healthy living practices (natural foods, avoiding processed and added-sugar foods), regular exercise, and practice of mental-health techniques like breathing exercises, mindfulness, and meditation to treat ailments. There is good science behind the idea that there are alternatives to ingesting manufactured medicines and that these alternative treatments can even be better for peoples' long-term health. For example, avoiding antibiotics in some situations is more beneficial because the antibiotic destroys the helpful bacteria in our guts along with the invasive targets. THAT is alternative medicine - homeopathy is just bullshit.

The video is great, but what you said in the end: I'm not sure about this, especially the part of German exclusive videos.
I'd suspect that majority of your patrons do not speak German, so this wouldn't be beneficial to most of us. And treating it as a step towards multilingual videos also seems like a stretch. I mean, OK, you're one of the most successful creators on patreon but I don't think even you guys can afford translating all (or most) Kurzgesagt videos to as many as, say, 10 languages?
