I don't think you're reading too much into it, considering Disney released Luca during pride month. Also, holding hands is what a relationship would look like for the characters' age range. I think the love triangle was well-written (for Disney) but I absolutely hated it. It just felt wrong that he met someone who changed his entire perspective on life (and ran away for), only to find someone else to be interested in the following week... maybe the timeline was meant to be longer than that. I don't know. I think it needed to be fleshed out more. Luca wants to "go to school" but he also wants to "escape everything and travel the world with his friend". I think his friend had the right to be upset. He made it very clear that he didn't want to bring anyone else on their travels, and Luca agreed. He got away with doing this whole "school" thing too easy. The only way it would make sense for his friend to give him up would be if he knew Luca never wanted to "travel the world" in the first place. So, the allegory aside, if you tell your boyfriend you want a monogamous relationship, they agree, and then they start flirting with a girl. Luca tells the boyfriend "I choose you", the boyfriend sees he's sad and so tells him to be with her... Is it just me or does that not make sense?
