酒場のカウンターに立っていた千夜は、ヴァルトの一言に思わず言葉を失った。
Chiyo, standing at the tavern counter, was left speechless by Wald’s sudden words.

「え、……討伐依頼！？」
“Wha—A monster hunting request!?”

「おう。とはいえ、いきなり危険なとこ行けってんじゃねぇ。街道沿いの林にゴブリンがちょいと出没しててな。こいつを退治する依頼がギルドに回ってきてる」
“Yeah. But I ain’t sending you anywhere dangerous right off the bat. Seems some goblins have been lurking near the forest along the road. The guild's passed us a request to take care of ’em.”

ヴァルトはカウンター越しに依頼書をひょいと差し出す。
Wald casually slid the request form across the counter.

そこには『軽度：ゴブリン数体、街道妨害の恐れあり。調査及び討伐』とある。
It read: “Low risk – several goblins sighted. Possible disruption to the road. Investigate and eliminate.”

「もちろん、千夜だけで行かせたりしねぇよ。ミレイも一緒に行ってくれる。なあ？」
“Don’t worry, I ain’t sending you alone. Mirei’s going with you. Right?”

「うんっ♪」
“Yup♪”

テーブルを拭いていたミレイがにこっと笑って、千夜の横にぴょんと立つ。
Mirei, who had been wiping down a table, smiled brightly and hopped over to Chiyo’s side.

「この前の訓練、ちょっとだけやったでしょ？ あれ思い出せば大丈夫！千夜ちゃんは無理せず、私の後ろに隠れててもいいよ～♪」
“Remember that little bit of training we did before? You’ll be fine if you just recall that! You can hide behind me the whole time if you want, Chiyo-chan~♪”

「そ、そんな気軽に言われても……！」
“I—I don’t think this is something to say so casually…!”

千夜はおそるおそる依頼書を手に取り、小さくため息をついた。
Chiyo hesitantly picked up the request form and let out a quiet sigh.

（ゴブリンって……ゲームや漫画では見たことあるけど、実物なんて……いや、実物って何……？）
(Goblins… I’ve seen them in games and manga, but the real thing...? Wait, what even is the “real” thing?)

そんな不安を察してか、ヴァルトが口を開く。
Perhaps sensing her unease, Wald spoke up again.

「こっちの世界で生きてくなら、戦えるようになっておいて損はねぇ。今のうちに小さな依頼から慣れていくんだな。ま、信頼してるから頼むんだ」
“If you’re gonna live in this world, it won’t hurt to learn how to fight. Better to get used to it with something small like this. I’m counting on you ‘cause I trust you.”

千夜はその言葉に一瞬目を見開き、そして小さくうなずいた。
Chiyo’s eyes widened slightly at his words, then she gave a small nod.

「……わかりました。いちおう、行ってみます。怖くなったらすぐ帰ってきますから！」
“…Okay. I’ll give it a try. If it gets too scary, I’m turning right back though!”

「それでいい。それで十分だ」
“That’s fine. That’s more than enough.”

ヴァルトが満足げにうなずき、千夜はミレイと共に討伐用の支度を始めた――
Wald nodded in satisfaction, and Chiyo began preparing for the hunt with Mirei.

森の入り口は街道からそう遠くなかった。朝の日差しを受けて、草木はキラキラと揺れている。
The forest entrance wasn’t far from the road. Morning sunlight filtered through the trees, making the leaves shimmer.

「ゴブリンはね、昼間はあまり活発じゃないけど、警戒は必要だよ〜。すばしこいし、集団で来るとちょっと厄介」
“Goblins aren’t very active during the day, but we still need to be careful. They’re quick—and a bit of a problem when they attack in groups.”

軽やかに前を歩くミレイのしっぽが、時折ふわりと揺れる。千夜は彼女の背中を見ながら、なんとか歩を進めていた。
Mirei walked lightly ahead, her fluffy tail swaying from time to time. Chiyo followed behind, doing her best to keep up.

「ミレイちゃんってほんとすごいよね……。私なんて、道に迷わないように後ろくっついてるだけで精一杯……」
“You’re amazing, Mirei… I’m just trying not to get lost sticking to your back.”

「ふふっ、それでもちゃんと来てくれてるんだから十分だよ♪」
“Hehe, but you're here with me. That’s more than enough♪”

そう言ってミレイが振り返った、その瞬間。
Mirei turned to look at her just then—

――ガサッ。
—Rustle.

「……っ！？　あっちに何か動いた音！」
“…!? I heard something move over there!”

ミレイはすぐに身を低くし、草むらに目を凝らす。
Mirei crouched instantly, narrowing her eyes at the brush.

「……ゴブリンかも。ちょっと確認してくるね」
“…Could be goblins. I’ll go check it out.”

「え、えっ、私も――」
“W-Wait, I’ll come—”

「ダメ。今は動かないで。すぐ戻るから！」
“No. Stay here. I’ll be right back!”

ぴょん、と音もなく跳ねるように、ミレイの姿は木立の奥へと消えていった。
With a soft bound, Mirei disappeared silently into the thicket.

（やばい……ほんとに一人にされた……）
(Oh no… I’m actually alone right now…)

心臓がどくどくとうるさい。木々のざわめきが不安を煽る。
Her heart pounded in her ears. The rustling trees only heightened her anxiety.

（でも、言われたとおり動かないで……ここで待ってれば――）
(But she said to stay put… If I just wait here—)

――どこかで、何かが折れる音。
—Snap. Something broke nearby.

びくっと肩をすくめ、思わず後ずさる。その足元、踏み外した一歩が。
She flinched and stepped back instinctively—then lost her footing.

「きゃっ――！？」
“Kyaah—!?”

ずるり、と足元の土が崩れた。斜面を滑り落ちるようにして、千夜は下へ転がっていく。
The earth gave way beneath her. Chiyo tumbled down a slope, unable to stop herself.

「うっ……いたた……どこ……？」
“Oww… where… am I…?”

鼻をつく、泥と獣臭の混ざったようなにおい。壁際には骨のようなものが散らばっている。
A pungent stench—mud mixed with beast odor—hit her nose. Bones were scattered along the walls.

（これ……まさか……ゴブリンの――）
(Wait… no way… is this a goblin—)

ごぽっ……と奥から何かが動く音。
Splorp… Something stirred deeper within.

そして、複数の小さな目が闇の中で光った。
And then—several small eyes gleamed in the darkness.

「――やばいっ！」
“—This is bad!”
