The Oney Situation, This week in Spacemans, Payday, Other things.
Added 2019-05-01 12:22:15 +0000 UTCAlright. Here's the situation report o' the Month. It's the First and I really shout get in the habit of writing more here. However, I tend to suck at writing in these places and other than telling you folks "Hey, don't give me money" or "It is rapidly approaching the end of month, please stop giving me money" or "Hey, My health is taking priority and I can't make 50 things a week anymore".
Some people naturally got mad at the above. One person told me the only reason they watched was for daily content and that they hoped I got cancer. Naturally I told them precisely what they could jam up their ass, and how far. I'm truly in wonder why Patreon didn't kick my ass off the platform. Hah. Anyways, lets get to the business at hand. Your monthly update and some things.
1. The "Oney" Situation - over the past many days people have asked me about the Oney Situation. Yes, it appears he wants to make ss13 content on the semi-regular now. Yes, the Oney Tide was, and is, a thing. Yes, this will impact your ss13 experience, and mine. In short, I'm going to give a summation of my many points on why I don't watch Oney Plays and why generally this is probably a worsening trend for ss13. I'll be brief.
For the record, I used to like Oney when he made Cartoons. The Newgrounds era. And yeah, he got totally fucked over by early youtube Algorithm tweaks. All the cartoonists and animators did back then. Shit's rough. Some of his stuff had me on the floor, he had a great sense of humor and I really dug his stuff. However, on ss13 things are different.
If you look in the upper right-hand of the latest ss13 video of his, you'll notice an admin tab.
Yes, he's playing as an admin.
What this means, at least from people I know that have played a round with him is:
1. If you attack or otherwise fuck with him (even as an antag) you are banned.
2. If you steal things he wanted to play with during the round, you are banned
3. If you say things he doesn't like, you are banned
4. If you lock a door he wants in, you are banned.
5. If you inconvenience him, you are banned.
6. If he picks a fight with you, and you win, you are banned.
7. He will give himself antag status and then say "Boy I hope I get antag"
8. He uses Admin-Heal and other tools to return from death/respawn.
I'm sorry if these "revelations" cause you to not enjoy his content re: ss13 but he's more or less running his server as a sandbox and he's the big toddler. I have no idea why, but that's how he has chosen to play. I only bring this up to touch on a second issue - how this affects you and I.
The first time oney played this game, he griefed. Badly. He also was a terrible antag, he more or less got murdered by people throwing garbage at him. The day after that the servers filled up with the OneyTide. Basically this was children running around screaming retardedly about whatever and then smashing whatever they could. They saw the game as an antag simulator. On Oney's Podcast he reiterated how much he loved griefing and this game as a griefing platform. There was a smaller tide after that but, admins have since put on some serious big boy pants and handed out appropriate bans.
So, why mention this? I'm glad you asked.
Space Station 13 is not in a good place right now. As I have long predicted, larger channels are taking an interest in it for various reasons - supersaturation of their markets for one (There are a billion youtube users give or take) and needing new content for two. At the expense of this small, and admittedly crazy community, they are willing to lay sacrifice. Namely, they need this to stay ahead of the sameness infecting every other game channel and well - if that means you can't play for weeks on time because the servers are chock full of screaming children, so be it.
This also has a heavy blowback on smaller youtube channels. Not mine per se, that was doomed from the start due to my incompetence and madness. Also the fucking swearing, that probably really curtailed it many times over. What I do worry about is the future of smaller spaceman content from here on out. A year ago (before all these big boys started to slum it for easy points) the top ten youtube search returns was split between myself and boat-bomber. He taking the top half, myself the bottom. page 2 was a bunch of up and coming people who had interesting points of view, cool ideas, role-play guides, and so on. People who were genuinely trying to cover the game in their own way, or rep their servers in a positive light. Post Sseth and Oney-Tide, the Top Search returns are Oney, Oney, Sseth, streamers reacting to sseth, and so on. Small channels got the shaft, badly. It set the algorithm. They are now non-entities. So, I do feel for them having been a tiny, aspiring nerd channel myself once upon a day.
To somehow address this - Now, we did set a certain amount of money as the cut-off for starting a SS13 project to hopefully curtail some of this horseshit. However, that funding line continues to sink below that threshold, and in addition the very competent coders I do have tend to be very busy with real life meatspace problems. Please understand we'd love to try to offer you guys a way out of the above bullshit, but we are not in a place to do so at this time. We are still at the "idea" phase, and I do NOT want you guys to labor under the assumption that we're hard at work turning out new and innovative ways to fart in space. I do not want you guys deceived on what we're doing, but more update as we're able.
So, that covers my thoughts on the Oney Situation and This Week in Spacemans. Uh, Oh yeah, Payday.
2. Payday. It is my payday. Hooray! Lets talk about that. In the past I've always been more or less upright with you guys. This Patreon was started when I had little money, worked two or three side-jobs to get by, and really struggled to make ends meet. It was a time of hustle, and bustle, and grunt. heh, I like that word. Grunt. So, yeah, this patreon was initially established to give me a chance to stay in the business, namely to pay my exorbitant internet bills. Comcast, where I lived, put a cap on internet and uploading as often as I did - I exceeded the living FUCK out of it. They were charging 150-200 a month for what was a 50 a month bill previously and, well, it was either start a patreon or stop uploading.
I chose patreon because people told me "DO IT FUCKO."
So I did it.
Ever since it has grown and shrank and I've tried to use the money well. Better software for things, better equipment and microphones, computer upgrades, games to play, and all that. Also I have to set a chunk of this stuff aside because all of this comes out of my ass at the end of the year on Taxes. Kinda rough on that end. That being said, I think a lot of the goals I put down on the Patreon were more or less set there from ages ago. I hadn't looked at them until recently when on a stream somebody started saying my patreon goals/etc was total garbage. I took that criticism to light and have decided to overhaul the goals and see what we can do about that, yea?
How's that for honesty.
Hey, at least I don't ask people to pay me 75 bucks a month to get their name in a game, or join a super secret discord where you get a gold-tier-status and then I can ditch your ass and never speak to you. That shit's for chumps.
So yeah, I'm gonna be overhauling that.
Uh, moving forward, I'll keep you guys appraised. I try to post a few times a month here, let you guys know what's going on as soon as I know what's going on in my life. I also love to repost all sorts of fun little things as I find them.
If you think I can do anything better here - updates or what have you, please let me know. I will be watching for answers.

2019-05-01 14:25:26 +0000 UTCwell, AN upside, or at least potential one, is the now realistic possibility of things like unitystation to get a lot of attention (basically being SS13 without the BYOND). given the quantity of people now and soon to be paying attention to the game, there may come more people willing to throw their money away to develop a version that doesn't need the digital cancer of BYOND to run.
