In this episode of Behind the Score, I'm taking you through the Overture to Paulus by Felix Mendelssohn. This oratorio tells the story of Saul/Paul the apostle, through his early railing against followers of Jesus, his conversion, and his evangelism in the years after. The Overture makes use of the German Lutheran hymn Wachet Auf.
We start by taking a look at the hymn's usage by Bach in his BWV 140 Cantata. Then, we follow along with the score to Mendelssohn's Overture. Stay turned to toward the end to hear how this piece has some personal significance to me. Enjoy!
