Fan Favorites - Episode 1: Relationship Songs

For our very first Fan Favorites video, we're exploring the Relationship Songs that move us. We cultivated these selections from you, the Daily Doug community, and it's a great list of songs!

There's music by Gentle Giant, Queen, Yes, Billy Joel, The Who, Dream Theater, ELP, Peter Gabriel, Mike + The Mechanics, Marc Cohn, and Genesis. I hope you enjoy! I know I did.

If you love this beautiful song by Dream Theater, The Best of Times, you need to hear the song Far From Heaven, Doug. Seriously, that is an amazing song.

DAVID SCHWARTZ

It's my favorite Genesis Album, musically miles ahead of any other album, your review though did give me a slightly different take on the meaning of the story, thank you

Steve Campbell

from Gentle Giant you should pick Spooky Boogie

Thomas Kirschner

I know I might be real late here, but there is a Daily Doug Directory on Doug's main channel on YT. It has a list of reactions with links to everything Doug has reacted to.

Arrow2theACL

Don't Give Up is probably now my fave song - so true and relevant (and never noticed the solar eclipse thing going on in the background in the video b4 - great metaphor)

Geoff Budd

This popped up when I was searching for something else on Doug's excellent channel - and I'm so glad it did! Almost two hours of excellent music and reaction. I must admit quite a few songs had me in tears - in a good way. Thanks Doug!

Geoff Budd

It took a while to figure out and find, but this is why I came! Someone mentioned in a YT comment said you had reacted to Best of Times somewhere on your Patreon and I have found it! My favorite DT song of all time, the intro is literally my wake up alarm(eases you in then gets crazy fast if you still sleeping through it XD) Thank you so much for this!

Dani

Tommy by the Who. The whole thing. Mind-blowing masterpiece.

Kathy Ratino

This was such a great idea. You played a few I hadn't heard and will be adding to my Amazon Music playlist.

Kathy Ratino

I second that. One of my favorite ELP songs.

Kathy Ratino

Trilogy is about the end of a relationship. Definitely a relationship song. "We tried to lie, but you and I know better than to let each other lie."

Kathy Ratino

Thank you very very much for opening this for the "old" EPL Tier!!!

Eusebio R-Z

The Fan Favorites bar is officially set. Great listen.

Arrow2theACL

Doug, you do realize that if you ever need another break in producing some Daily Dougs, you can excerpt Trilogy from here over into its own episode on YT in a few weeks/months...

Great Scott

Trilogy - three people playing, three people on the front of the album. Not convinced this was ever a relationship song.

Andrew Wingham

You mentioned the drumming on the Dream Theatre track - John Bonhamesque.

Andrew Wingham

Thanks for this wonderful selection of music. I'm now a Dream Theatre fan. 10cc, You don't know 10cc.... Doug, you have get to do the album "The Original Soundtrack" the third studio album by the English art rock band 10cc in 1974.

Jools Lee-Webb

Of course it's always a delicate balance of giving us analysis and reflection, which has to be done by talking WHILE listening, without disturbing the listening experience. And, for me personally, this time The Doug stood for his major exam: in case he didn't get silenced by this prolonged instrumental final of finals, then I would have to leave the so appreciated Doug for a while for me to recover. Thank God I worried for nothing.

Thijs Bollen

You are correct. I was thinking of the Three Sides Live medley. Thanks for setting me straight. πŸ™‚

Scott Stone

Thank You so much for including Love Reign O’er Me. This is my absolute favorite album of all time. I submitted it for EPL a week or two ago. You really need to invest the time for a deep dive. Knew as soon as you heard it you would be intrigued and move it up the list.

Richard Plante

Scott Stone

I enjoyed that, thanks Doug.

Owen Edmonds

Long story short - I had submitted ELP's Trilogy, but there was an issue with the way I submitted it, so someone else resubmitted it for me.

Scott Stone

Quadrophenia is in my opinion just Pete and the band at their best, and for me in their most interesting period. One of the best rock albums I,ve ever heard! Seconds out is also a Genesis favorite. The bands last period with Steve, in fact he left the band during the mixing of the album. He developed from being a newboy guitarist, to a songwriter and was frustrated that the band often rejected his contributions. He also wanted to work with other people. Bruford uses this track in his lectures, wonderful interplay between him and Phil!

Ole Martinsen

So glad you did "Love Reign O'er Me". Quadrophenia is really amazing. It has four different musical themes (one for each Who member/each personality of Jimmy,) and the way Pete integrates the whole thing is truly fascinating.

Russell L. Craft

Seconds Out is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded, the fidelity is just jawdropping. Bruford and Collins together is just awesome. Thanks for bringing this to us, Doug.

Anthony Taylor

This is a great list. But, I would say, Milke & the Mechanics, Peter Gabriel and Genesis are horses from the one stable.
