Fan Favorites: Episode 7 - Songs from the Daily Doug Master List

I'm pleased to present our Fan Favorites video for the month of August. This month, we focused on songs that have been on the Master List for a while, starting with 25 songs. Seven songs ended up making the video, and I enjoyed the listen.

Note: This was my first attempt at recording with the new camera. I don't have the settings dialed in yet. And, I didn't know it stops recording at the 30 minute mark. So, the first two songs are with the new camera and the rest of the video is with the old camera.

Songs included:

- Year of the Cat (Al Stewart) - first time listen

- Jeremy (Pearl Jam)

- Hessian Peel (Opeth) - first time listen

- White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)

- Biko (Peter Gabriel) - first time listen

- The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys (Traffic) - first time listen

- Do It Again (Steely Dan)

Fan Favorites: Episode 7 - Songs from the Daily Doug Master List

Comments

I love that crunchy, dissonant chord at the end of "Low Spark"!

Monty Ernst

Doug, I didn't see anyone reference this reboot of Biko in the comments. Equally, if not more powerful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWNEr4eHL18

Greg Magsaysay

Yep, saw him during the So days and Univ of IL, ended with Biko. That slow exit of each musician at the end and the crowd chanting after everyone was gone still gives me goosebumps and makes me tear up 35 years later

Greg Magsaysay

Year of the Cat. Can't believe you'd never heard that before given your liking for singer-songwriters! The last time I heard that was at my dear friend Paula's funeral, where she had it as the curtain music. 3 years on and I cried again.

Chris Ramsbottom

Sad. No F.U.B.B.

Marcelo Rosalen Cucatti

That was fun. I love Grace Slick's vocals. I've great memories of seeing Gabriel sing Biko at an anti-aparthied rally back in the '80s. Year of the cat is just a delicious song. Get Back is one of the greatest opening tracks on a debut album. Pearl Jam were and still are a class act. The other stuff wasn't bad either.

Dave Brockis

That was perhaps the finest set of music I've heard. Well done, Council of Doug!

Paul Halicki

You can see the groove from Low Spark burrowing into Doug's brain. Addictive, innit?

Paul Halicki

I was introduced to Traffic by my uncle who went to Woodstock (the original).

Paul Halicki

Low Spark is just cool as hell.

Paul Halicki

I think White Rabbit is one of the greatest vocal performances of rock and roll.

Paul Halicki

*I* can't believe you've never heard it before either. It was huge for a long time.

Paul Halicki

Year of the Cat = Apex Yacht Rock.

Paul Halicki

They are very progessive as a band. No album sounds the same. I think Pale Communinion is a great starting point and if you like heavier you go back in time. Like more clean go forward.

Arrow2theACL

First time listening to Opeth. Very cool and want to check out more. Did anyone else hear the Atom Heart Mother similarities in the section that starts around 22:45 in the video?

B.K. Pagels

"Listen to THAT sound" in Low Spark is not Winwood's Hammond -- it was Chris Wood's heavily-effected saxophone! If you listen carefully to the cadence you can hear it as a saxophone.

Richard Rathbun

What I find interesting for me, is while I also had no idea behind the meaning of Jeremy until within the last year or so, it is the *only* song in its genre I could appreciate from when I first heard it. I'm not a fan of grunge at all otherwise.

Illume Eltanin

I missed that. Thanks for the info.

R. Douglas Helvering

Sounds like a good masterpiece Friday

R. Douglas Helvering

When "Jeremy" was new I was about 20 years old, didn't understand the words or meaning, didn't care for Eddie's voice. Jeremy's what what what. Thanks for reciting the lyrics and explaining the meaning. Now I have more respect for the song, even if it is still not going to be one of my favorite songs/bands.

BRIAN MILLER

^this^ I was totally surprised by most of Hessian Peel, from what others had told me about Opeth.

Illume Eltanin

I still get chills as Biko reaches it's conclusion; saw them perform this for the first time on that tour - every performance of this has such power.

Steve MacArthur

As I think about it, Al Stewart's Year of the Cat album would work as an Extended Play Lounge possibility; I loved this album when it came out (ah, high school years!) and it remains a favorite to this day.

Steve MacArthur

Loved hearing your reaction to "Low Spark". While Steve Winwood is and was a genius, Traffic was more than just "Steve Winwood's old band". Capaldi, Chris Wood, and early on, Dave Mason were as much influences on the band as Steve. Mason left for a solo career. You might want to check out some of Mason's music, both with Traffic, as well as his solo work.

Dave Cohen

Roads to Moscow -- would be a good Al Stewart next up song

Charles Hill

Only Pearl Jam and Opeth that I haven't heard before, I would put the other 5 in my favourites list. So that's a positive start. Funny that Doug should mention misheard lyrics for Pearl Jam, firstly I misheard the name of the Hammond organist as Rick Power Shower, my excuse I do have significant hearing loss. Also the lead singers voice reminded me of Grant Lee Phillips from Grant Lee Buffalo, lots of misheard lyrics from Grant too. But both have very emotive voices. Today might be a GLB day.

FallingLeaf

I've never listened to Opeth before. I was enjoying much of that song, before it got to the metal style ("cookie monster" as I call it) vocal section. Ugh.

BRIAN MILLER

Great selection of songs, Doug! Opeth is one of my favorites, even with the growls 😉 “Awesome! … Where did they go now?!” Yeah, that sums up Opeth 🤣

Toby

Opeth: it is not a different language, it's a backwards lyrics :)

Sebastian Płatek

One of my favorite things about "Low Spark" is the way it's basically in three tempi at once. The bass hangs back at slow speed, imperturbably...and the piano often leads a bit of a double-time feel...but the hand percussion (mostly) sometimes puts us even faster, in quadruple time, accenting alternate 16th notes. The shifts are subtle, overlapping, and exquisite: beautifully played.

Jeff Norman

hope you can figure out the new camera...right now, it looks...not so good.

Jeff Norman

I hadn't listened to anyhting of Watershed for a while and Hessian Peel is great! I'll probably revisit the album now.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

Thanks for doing White Rabbit. I was very young when that came out and JA certainly influenced me as to what kinds of music I would choose to listen to just a little later on.

Brian Pate

Very enjoyable FF video. And I agree, quite an eclectic group. Was surprised you didn’t comment on the drums for Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. They were played by Jim Gordon. He’s played on countless great albums and I’m sure you’ve had him on the channel. He was the drummer for Zappa’s Apostrophe which would be the most recent. Tragic story with him as he had severe mental health issues, did some terrible things, and is incarcerated to this day. Quite a drummer.

Aaron West

Was wondering the some thing. Also Dear Mr. Fantasy.

Aaron West

This was a typical soundtrack of my first apartment ... come on in and spark one up ... thanks Doug!

Stop Propaganda

River is a great song and a lot easier to digest. Let's admit that Hessain Peel was recommended for the sole purpose to throw Doug off his game. No way to get all that in one listen.

Arrow2theACL

Steve Winwood-have you listened to Can't Find My Way Home by Blind Faith yet?

Illume Eltanin

Biko-I'm still hoping you'll do a double shot reaction consisting of Biko as Gabriel's set closer at the 1986 Amnesty International Concert in Giants Stadium and In Your Eyes from Gabriel's Secret World Live tour. His two most powerful live performances, in my opinion.

Illume Eltanin

The subtle drink of water for when the drop happens in the Opeth selection. I caught it Doug. ROFLMAO.

Arrow2theACL

Thanks for the Opeth, Doug! Their layers are far and wide. I know I'm a broken record, hope you get to "River" some day =) But Hessian Peel is hard to top!

Anthony Taylor

I'll probably comment multiple times through the watch, as the mood hits me. For more Al Stewart, check out Roads To Moscow. Stewart tells history like no other.
