Hedwig's Theme (Harry Potter) - John Williams - Behind the Score (Episode 32)

Today's Behind the Score is excerpted from a lecture I gave recently in our Exploring Chromaticism class. In this particular class, we were discussing chromaticism in melodies. There's perhaps no better example of a chromatic yet tonal melody than John Williams' iconic Hedwig's Theme from the Harry Potter movies. I hope you enjoy!

Has to be one of the best BTS' to date! Fantastic reduction of a fantastic piece with fantastic commentary and analysis. Make me think that the Harry Potter films owe a great deal of their glory to the music of John Williams.

A fascinating piece broken down very nicely. I didn't realize that all twelve tones were in a couple of phrases. John Williams is a natural treasure and I enjoy this second look behind the score of one of his pieces. This piece is my ring tone so every time I hear it, I look at my phone... lol. Makes me wish I took the class but reminds me why I didn't. I need to return to the basics first. Thank you for this, Doug.
