Uranus: The Magician | The Planets (Holst) | Behind the Score Ep. 59

We're continuing on in our exploration of The Planets by Gustav Holst. This time, it's movement 6, Uranus (The Magician). This is a bombastic and harmonically slippery movement with loads of color. I hope you enjoy!

Interesting listening to this I can hear Holst referring back to Berlioz's Symphony Fantastique and then here where Williams gets lots of inspiration from too. :D Cool.

Thanks Bill!

Two words: Air timpani! Thank you, Doug. As always, though my musical knowledge is rudimentary, I came away knowing much more than I did before. You're the best!

Thanks so much!

Magical! I love these BTS episodes about the Planets, and this is a great one. So much detail to see, and so much to reflect upon. I hope you feel better Doug, I think I may have some mind fog and you battled through it! I will not ever hear this piece the same way as I heard it before!

Rodney, if you take one octave (12 notes) then the amount of possible unique combinations is 12^12 ( >8 trillion). And that’s only one octave, just the combinations, no rythm, no duration, no volume changes: the possibilities are endless.

Some People say that there is no true new music because all notes, all chords, all melodies, all Rhythms have all been invented before. I don't believe that at all. With an open mind, Music as a aural language is just getting started as an art form which can communicate ideas across the planet. We've only begun it's journey among us humankind. We have yet to explore. Music Is Not Dead. It's only a baby.
