A Charlie Brown Christmas (Vince Guaraldi) | Behind the Score (Ep. 61)

With our last Behind the Score episode of the year, we're listening to and analyzing three classic original jazz compositions by Vince Guaraldi. Linus & Lucy, Skating, and Christmastime is Here were all included on the soundtrack album to the 1965 television special A Charlie Brown Christmas. And, along with the rest of Vince's arrangements, these songs have become integral to the Christmas experience for most Americans. I hope you enjoy this episode!

Absolutely lovely. Your highlighting of the simple, singable diatonic melodies supported by sophisticated jazzy harmonizations is firing up my musical neurons... well worth extended (pun intended) contemplation. Thanks!

Even if it wasn't associated with Charlie Brown, I'd still love it. It's got a great groove. He's very talented pianist! The only time I'm the pianist is after a lot of beer. ;)

Such a classic. Thank you Doug. I understood about 1/10 of the technical parts πŸ˜‚ but it’s always great to watch these. πŸ’•

This one goes all the way back to my youth, and I've never grown out of it. Vince Guaraldi's score fits the Peanuts films perfectly and brilliantly. Happy Holidays to everyone!

What a lovely Christmas present! This tv special aired for the first time just a few weeks after I was born, so it’s always been a big part of the holidays for me. When I was researching this submission, I discovered that the kids from the choir who participated in the recording each got paid with $5 and an ice cream cone!! πŸ˜„ Thank you, Doug - and Merry Christmas!

This music dominates at Christmastime in my family. It takes me back to memories of watching the Charlie Brown Christmas when I was 4 years old. I always thought in the groups of descending chords in Skating sounded like snow falling. Been waiting for this one, Doug. Thanks and Merry Christmas!
