POLL: Pick the next Extended Play Lounge album
Added 2025-01-05 04:05:23 +0000 UTCHey y'all!
Happy new year! To start off 2025, I'm really in the mood to hear a Marillion album. I have just been gifted the new Deluxe Edition of This Strange Engine. And, we already have Marbles, Brave, and With Friends from the Orchestra on the master list. So, this time, help me select from one of these four albums from this deserving band.

2025-01-08 03:28:07 +0000 UTCI am more familiar with Marbles. Not much on Brave. Voted for Marbles but if Brave wins (looks like it will) it'll give me a chance to listen. At some point you need to cover the majestic Ocean Cloud at least.

2025-01-07 19:02:42 +0000 UTCI love prog, although I can't stand Marillion. Tried to get into the band a few times, unsuccessfully.

2025-01-06 23:22:11 +0000 UTCI'm thinking the original mix for a first listen.

2025-01-06 14:57:20 +0000 UTCVery glad this is being done. However, I am completely unfamiliar with all these albums, and knowing the fans of Marilion to be the best collection of fans there are, I'm happy to let the cognoscenti decide. π

2025-01-05 22:11:49 +0000 UTCHi, Ralph. A Happy New Year to you too. Thanks for the temptations . I will have a meander through the bandβs music as you paint them in such positive colours. (Although I have to confess to a general antipathy towards bands joining forces with an orchestra, even amongst my own favourites; it too often seems an inharmonious marriage. If I had to name a successful meeting it might be The Five Bridges album by The Nice.)

2025-01-05 17:45:32 +0000 UTCSince we're not doing the Fish era this time, I'm not gonna say what I was gonna say. But I do still think that there's one album that jumped at me by its absence: Afraid of Sunlight.

2025-01-05 15:37:33 +0000 UTCBrave shocked a lot of us when it came out. A complete 180 from anything else. A dark masterpiece.

2025-01-05 15:25:15 +0000 UTCMuch love for This Strange Engine - but Brave is this band's EPIC. While I find all of the band's output to be upper echelon, the string of Brave | Afraid of Sunlight | This Strange Engine ranks among the great three album runs of all time. With Brave, Marillion firmly establishes themselves as seeking something bigger, artistically speaking. Eschewing any commercial-by-design formats and some would say, condemning themselves to the cult following sidelines. What would spell doom for most acts propelled Marillion to creative masterpieces both recorded, and business-wise to survive. They became pioneers of crowd funding; They created legendary Marillion Weekends - leveraging the power of the fanbase with a sort of micro-marketing - and they survived and thrived. FWIW - IMHO Marillion's strongest album, track for track, may well be Afraid Of Sunlight.

2025-01-05 15:09:21 +0000 UTCMuch as I would love to see your reaction to the epic title track of 'This Strange Engine' there can only really be one winner here - 'Brave', one of the greatest, most underrated Prog albums of all time, by anyone.

2025-01-05 13:36:42 +0000 UTCStrange to me that Marbles isn't ahead - I've always regarded it as their masterpiece. If Brave wins, there's a decision for Doug to make: original mix or Steven Wilson remix?

2025-01-05 13:29:47 +0000 UTCHi George, Happy New Year. There's a whole bunch of different "styles" within Marillion's music...there might be something that does take your fancy? Especially the live album with orchestra.

2025-01-05 10:55:28 +0000 UTCAs I have managed to familiarise myself well with the Hogarth-era albums over the past few years I'm keen to fill one major hole from it by hearing "Marbles".
