Concerto For Group and Orchestra (mvmt 2) | Jon Lord & Deep Purple (Behind the Score Ep. 62)

My first priority with the Behind the Score series in 2025 is to complete our exploration of Jon Lord's Concerto for Group and Orchestra. This time, we're concentrating on the beautiful second movement. I hope you enjoy!

We shouldn’t forget how ground breaking this would have been in its time. There was virtually no collaboration between the two worlds, and the thought of a long haired rocker having the audacity to write “proper” music would have been beyond the pale for many

Wow. That was quite beautiful. Jon Lord clearly knew what he was doing, and this is very skillfully written and executed. Thanks, Doug!

I second the proposal for the Copland piece, it's a gem. In fact, any piece by Copland is a gem!

This was a lovely piece and a lovely listen. I'm glad the remarks about the cadenza were made, because I was confused - cadenza in the slow movement, not involving the rest of the group, not really making much of the opportunity - huh?! Maybe this was more of a comment about Jon Lord having a moment to himself? Nerdy point - I noticed the solo flute at around 11:15 was actually a bass flute, so maybe the over-blowing to get it an octave up would make it project more than if a normal flute were used?🤓 Not notated as a bass flute, so maybe the conductor or player made the decision. I enjoyed this much more than the first movement, so I'm looking forward to the last movement next month.

That was really quite lovely. Maybe Lord should have done some more writing for orchestral instruments? Thanks for the analysis Doug. Happy New Year!

Ralph Darvill

That was really lovely. It strikes me that maybe Lord should have composed a lot more music for orchestral instrumentation. I've been listening to The Enid; a Prog/Classical band from England based around Robert John Godfrey, who was the orchestral arranger for Barclay James Harvest in the early 70s. I hope you can find time to check out their music. RJG is retiring from live performance this year, but the band continues for now. Apologies for a shameless plug not in the Discord!!! Forgive me.

Ralph Darvill

Thanks Jim!

R. Douglas Helvering

That was great! Thanks Doug!

Rhesus Perplexus

That was wonderful! Thanks, also for the music lesson, I enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to movement 3 😊

Lovely orchestration. The band's blues influenced themes seem out of place to my ear. Almost as if they need to simplify the piece for the band to fit in. The loveliest orchestral sequences remind me of Vaughn Williams. Please consider this for a future BTS, Copland's 1928 Symphony for Organ and Orchestra.
