GENESIS: A Trick of the Tail | Extended Play Lounge Ep. 91

I'm pleased to share our latest Extended Play Lounge episode, where we're listening to A Trick of the Tail from Genesis.

It's hard to believe that I had only heard ONE of these studio tracks previously...and this album has quickly become one of my favorites from the band. I hope you enjoy!

My joint 1st favourite album of all time with Close to the Edge Doc

Robbie Blue

Yeah I love this album. So grateful to be handed this by a prog friend. Among my favorite albums, as albums go.

JT Siren

A beautiful album - I loved the first side and Ripples when it came out. Mad Man Moon is now my favourite track - so atmospheric.

Bullseye!

Totally agree that the classic era ends with Steve Hackett.

I'm pleased to see Doug's reaction to the lovely musicality of this album was as I expected. It really is a beautiful record. I love Tony's use of the Mellotron here. I noticed too that it appeared to be a remastered version of the album that Doug was reviewing. I grew up with the original vinyl which is a bit murky by comparison; Phil's voice, Steve's guitar and Mike's bass were all more audible here...which is great. Mike's bass playing is routinely underappreciated by listeners to Genesis, and he only ever appeared to get #3 or#4 placing in the Best Bassist polls in the 70s and 80s.

Ralph Darvill

Yes my Favourite album of all time, really enjoyed your reaction to it.

To hear this afresh is ear-opening. There are references back to the recent Genesis e.g. the synth from Colony of Slippermen appears, and the similarity of Robbery Assault and Battery to Battle of Epping Forest. But the major impact is the sheer positivity that surges through this album pushing to the future even while referencing the past. It's a much better album than I remember - I was still mourning the loss of Peter Gabriel. The stand out track for me was always Entangled - the second part with the synth solo, and I tried to dismiss the Phil vocals. However, I think this album is much better than my prejudices could allow, and much more connected to where the band had recently come from. So now to Trespass? I think that will be unavoidable! 🤣

This is not really relevant to anything, but anyway. In 17 or 18, I saw a Genesis cover band do Seconds Out at a prog festival. Later, I saw the drummer nerd out to Chester Thompson about playing the stuff he did back in the day.

“Any Major Dude” from Steely Dan’s 1974 album “Pretzel Logic” has a brief mention of the Squonk.
