POLL: Pick the next Extended Play Lounge

For this poll, I went through the Master List and wanted to give another shot for some albums that have been on the list for quite some time. I'm still quite interested in all of these albums. Help me pick the one to listen to first!

This poll will run through Monday June 3. Happy Voting!

Thank you!

Illume Eltanin

I have to be in the right mood for it.

R. Douglas Helvering

No worries. When the time comes, I'll re-confirm everything... :)

R. Douglas Helvering

I too wanted Strawbs as well and also voted for GG as the viable alternative. I've had copies of both albums for nearly 50 years.

BrianTheJeepGuy

Easy choice this time. Strawbs, Hero & Herione. No doubt little known in the USA so won't win. Yet voted into the top 50 (I think it was?) best prog albums of all time.

Trevor Cotterell

It takes time to get GG, but it's rewarding believe me. To me, the were the most talented prog band around in the 70's.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

I still haven’t learned to like Gentle Giant. Sorry. My money’s on Marillion “Brave”. Great song!

Karl Stubsjoen

I was fortunate to attend a three night event of the Qatsi trilogy, accompanied by The Philip Glass Ensemble playing the score for each movie live while the movies were shown on a screen above the stage. Glass was on keyboards. That three day event is still one of my all time favorite theater/concert experiences.

Illume Eltanin

Always fun to hear more Gentle Giant!

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

My problem is... having to choose between Oxygene and Koyaanisqatsi. Oh well, it looks like they're not going to win anyway

Eusebio R-Z

The original Oxygene album stands very well on its own. Personally I find the "continuations" mildly disappointing (I don't mean to say they are bad, just that for me they fail to add enough to the original album)

Eusebio R-Z

Hasn't Doug always said he is not a fan of Reichian ambient style music?

Ralph Darvill

I've gone with Brave, because not only is it one of Marillion's best albums, it is simply one of the most affecting collections of songs ever.

Ralph Darvill

If it’s not on YouTube, which may be why the version I submitted is the full score rather than the original soundtrack recording, you may be able to find it on Spotify. But, as I don’t do Spotify, I’m uncertain.

Illume Eltanin

I have to go with Gentle Giant as it's my favourite GG album by far and I think it is underrated. I've always the Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack, so I was a bit torn. I think the other albums will always reappear and so will be featured sometime. So my argument for The Power and The Glory, is that this is perhaps a one time opportunity to hear Gentle Giant at their best!

Adie

Dr. Doug, please search out the 46 minute version of Koyaanisqatsi when you get to it, if you don’t do the film version. It’s the one I meant to attach when I suggested it. In my opinion, it is a more concise well edited listening experience than the full score and easier to appreciate.

Illume Eltanin

I wanted Strawbs but it looks like it’s going to be a 2 way contest so I went with GG.

Pam Norris

Ah, fudge. Definitely the incorrect one.

Illume Eltanin

I just checked the link on the current master list- it's the 73-minute version.

Tom (the soggy one)

illume is right- the original, Original Soundtrack Album for Koyaanisqaatsi was a 46-minute single album. The same music, just not all of it, some segments shortened, and decided breaks between 'cuts'. Doesn't have the same effect, IMHO, but still excellent Phillip Glass music.

Tom (the soggy one)

It is the most engrossing, immersive experience. The bigger the screen, the better. I saw it in the theater when first released, and was absolutely floored. My opinion hasn't changed in the intervening 41 years.

Tom (the soggy one)

Oh, dear. Two of my recommendations which made it to the Master List, Koyaanisqatsi and Oxygene, are in this poll. How do I choose???

Illume Eltanin

I personally disagree. I think each album, as I believe they were each recorded about a decade apart, need to be listened to individually and absorbed, before moving on to the next. One needs to appreciate that the first album was recorded on all analog synthesizers by a single artist, and I believe they were recorded in his kitchen. The other albums each had more advanced instruments available to Jarre. If Dr. Doug enjoys Oxygene, perhaps the rest of the trilogy can be approached similarly to how he is slowly making his way through the Moody Blues Magnificent Seven albums.

Illume Eltanin

Noted, buddy. Never heard of Koyanisqaatsi, so I'll go look Glass up. Cheers.

Adrian Goodrich

The soundtrack version of Koyaanisqatsi (black album cover with red letters), is what I linked in my suggestion. That version is only 46 minutes long and, in my opinion, is a more enjoyable listening experience. The original score, which was released later, is a different album. Dr. Doug, if the link I attached is over 46 minutes, it's the incorrect version. Please search out the 46 minute recording.

Illume Eltanin

Not the soundtrack version (black album cover with red letters), which is what I linked in my suggestion.

The Strawberry Hill Boys, founded in 1964 in Strawberry Hill, London. One hell of a musical evolution.

Adrian Goodrich

There IS, Kellie. And music - and especially prog, IMO - reinforces that hope. Music BRINGS hope. John Miles nailed it: To live without my music Would be impossible to do In this world of troubles My music pulls me through

Adrian Goodrich

Agree with all of that. I bring life, and I can take you where You can see, and feel, and breathe, and touch the air. I bring life and I can take you there.

Adrian Goodrich

Like all acquired tastes, once appreciated, it is the most enduring. Marillion's Brave takes a few listens to completely immerse yourself in its magnificence. It is challenging in its melancholy. But it packs an emotional punch that is uniquely its own. The Great Escape medley, as a standalone is impressive... in the context of the entire album, it reaches into your soul and pulls out your heart. There has never been a musical work in the rock pantheon that is more demonstrative of the saying, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" than Brave - which is why it is perfect as an extended play choice. Top 10 all time album for me easily. Top Marillion album? Many will argue Fish-era selections - which have their own charm, or Afraid of Sunlight, which is also fabulous, but because of "the whole", it is always Brave for me.

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

Well I’m a treasoner yankee but there is always hope! lol

KellieE69

There's blood in the dust Where the city's heart beats The children play games That they take from the streets How can you teach when you've so much to learn May you turn In your grave New world There is hate in your eyes I have seen it before Planning destruction Behind the locked door Were you the coward who fired the last shot May you rot In your grave New world There is death in the air With the lights growing dim As those who survive Sing a desperate hymn Pray that god grants you one final request May you rest In your grave New world

Adrian Goodrich

Some GREAT stuff. And a certain Mr Wakeman was involved too, earlier days. Grave New World (superb!) and Hero & Heroine IMO their best, but most of their output is SO listenable if you are a Brit and love folk rock! Fools must pretend to be wise, we've a faith that we use as a heavy disguise...

Adrian Goodrich

Mine too but couldn

Dennis Rees

Hero and Heroine was the pinnacle of prog for Strawbs. But their early English pastoral albums were also great. Here's a suggestion for Doug: Maybe do an extended play lounge that takes a couple of songs from various albums from a single artist and show how they have evolved/changed/grown over time. Strawbs would be a great example, but also Genesis, Marillion, even Manfred Mann come to mind.

Old Rocker

If you do Glass, you HAVE to do the film version.

Bruce E Bowling

I know - and love - four of them. SO tempted to go for The Strawbs (Had it been Grave New World, no contest) but my vote goes - just - for the wonderful Marillion.

Adrian Goodrich

I've heard some from them...really cool band.

R. Douglas Helvering

If we are going to do Oxygene, we need to do the full album trilogy, parts 1-20. Can’t just do the first 6.

Ryan B Harvey

I’m voting for The Strawbs because I’ve never heard them.

KellieE69

It is time for Oxygene!

Si

It's worth it! Although I like Powaqqatsi better (also a great movie)

Jack R.

When it comes time, maybe I will do the whole movie...I've never seen it.

R. Douglas Helvering

Here's the thing- as much as I LOVE Koyaanisqatsi, It's just not right without the movie visuals. It's also an hour and 20 minutes with no real breaks in the music. Still, I know Doug would be enthralled and entranced by the piece!

Tom (the soggy one)

Voting for Glass (as a keen follower for nearly forty years) even though unlikely to win here, but I would have chosen a more modern piece I think, possibly either of the other two scores in the Qatsi trilogy, or perhaps one of the orchestral works - perhaps the Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra.

Les Mable

Some great choices... I challenge 93 percent of those voting to give Koyanisqaatsi a listen! Another all-time favorite of mine on the list Oxygene. Someday. If and when you do these - I suggest the surround sound version of Koy... and the "in the living room" edition of Oxygene which includes video (but might run into copyright issues).

TreeN6TR

Hero and Heroine is one of my all time favorites!

Ian Swank

Great choices!
