POLL: Pick the Next Extended Play Lounge
Added 2024-07-04 02:54:50 +0000 UTCIn this poll, I need your help picking one of Peter Gabriel's solo albums to hear for the first time. We've looked at so many 'solo' albums by members of classic progressive rock groups, but I've still never heard any of Peter's albums in their entirety. And, I've had Peter on the brain since our Fan Favorites video at the end of June.
Secret World (Live), 4 (Security), So, and I/O are all from the Master List. I've added in Us to round out our usual five options. I've heard a smattering of the most well-known songs from these albums, and I'm eager to look more into Peter's solo work.
The poll will be active through Monday, July 8. Happy Voting!
Comments
I’ll definitely change my vote to “Car” if the first 3 albums are added.

2024-07-05 16:08:05 +0000 UTCI bought the album Security (in cassette!) when it first came out on the strength of hearing and seeing the video for Shock the Monkey on MTV. I am so glad I did as there are no weak songs on the album!

2024-07-05 04:19:00 +0000 UTCI will be honest with you...pick any Peter Gabriel album and I am listening in intently for Doug's reaction!

2024-07-05 01:56:30 +0000 UTCThis is akin to choosing which is your favorite child. Yikes! Security was my first tour and holds a special place in my soul. Peter surfing the crowd during Lay Your Hands on Me, WOW! Since most of my favorite Us songs are featured in Secret World Live, I have to go with the live version. If you saw this show, you know that it was transformative in live music at the time. I still giggle when I think about Tony being stuffed into a suitcase and popping back up at the end of Secret World for another bow.

2024-07-04 21:55:53 +0000 UTCI voted for 4. Now, it's a question of personal taste, but I like the Dark Side Mix of I/O better. I think it sounds richer, more interesting

2024-07-04 14:50:36 +0000 UTCNever thought I would refuse to vote on a PG album for an EPL. Well, with 1(Car), 2(Scratch) and 3(Melt) not mentioned, I let fate decide...

2024-07-04 14:31:52 +0000 UTCOf course I voted for the underdog, that being Us in my opinion. It will never win.

2024-07-04 13:54:19 +0000 UTCthis is an interesting one. "So" was his most popular album but I'd be inclined to go back further. 4 (security) is one of my ATFs, the one I voted for... I think you'll be interested. it's quite adventurous. 3 (melt) is maybe the most important, the album where for the first time everything came together and made something entirely new. btw, quite the baller move to make your first 4 solo albums untitled. then the subsequent ones two letters. fewest letters used over a solo career. :-)

2024-07-04 11:56:55 +0000 UTCJust a reminder for you all that Peter also released German versions of Melt and Security. Many of the songs have remixed backing tracks. Kate Bush’s backing vocals really kick it on “Spiel ohne Grenzen”.

2024-07-04 11:29:16 +0000 UTCI voted for Security. While So, Us and Secret World Live are great albums, they represent PG's more commercial (and sucessful) period. Great as they are, I think you get more insight into PG as an artist from Security. Perhaps that is also true of I/O, but there is more creative energy and exploration in the earlier work (IMHO).

2024-07-04 10:42:00 +0000 UTCI’d preferred his first solo album (1), but chose Security as a good second 😁👍🏻

2024-07-04 09:08:52 +0000 UTCThe Secret World Live album gets my vote. It’s an album that my whole family thoroughly likes, notwithstanding quite different musical preferences, and it’s filmed too. Great musicianship, emotional, a joy to watch and listen to.

2024-07-04 06:38:56 +0000 UTCPeter Gabriel 3 (Melt) would be my choice, in my view one of a handful of contenders for best abum ever made by anybody. You urgently need to listen to it sooner rather than later.

2024-07-04 06:07:05 +0000 UTCI'd go for 3 as well, but Security has got one or my favourite tracks of all time, San Jacinto.

2024-07-04 06:06:46 +0000 UTCAs "4" is my favourite (have never liked the additional titles), I've gone for that. I still haven't heard all of the new album and could have gone for that, but the oldest of those is by far the most interesting musically and is the least "mainstream".

2024-07-04 05:11:02 +0000 UTCSo is getting more votes than Security? Perverts.

2024-07-04 04:38:10 +0000 UTCSecurity is a MUST!!! Gabe at his best, and that tour was unbelievable!

2024-07-04 03:53:57 +0000 UTCSo will have to do. Of the selected group I think it’s the strongest example of that time period. I just think that one of his first three should have been on the list. Of those first three albums, PG I/Eyes would have been my vote. Secret/Live is great but all of the material is concert-ized. He’s so much more interesting when heard fresh-out-of-the-oven, instead of, “Does my face HAVE to fill half of a football field?” Don’t get me wrong! His concerts ARE amazing. Thought provoking, incredibly-paced, and very responsive to fan reaction to his releases, he does go the extra mile to play up to there expectations (It took, what?, six years before he thought Solsbury Hill’s live arrangement was good enough to present to a live audience-from his debut album, it was his biggest single until Sledgehammer). I think my point is that without the visuals one of his concerts just is not… Just my take on thing.

2024-07-04 03:52:14 +0000 UTCFor an early (i.e. prior to the turn of the century) overview of his career you can't go past the Secret World (Live) set.

2024-07-04 03:51:18 +0000 UTCI saw the I/O tour and it was outstanding!! IMO, So, while a fantastic album, shouldn’t be on this list for everyone knows In Your Eyes, Sledgehammer, Red Rain, etc. Most don’t know a lot of songs (Doug included) on any of the other albums and they all need a listen. Each album brings a very unique flavor of music to the listener…

2024-07-04 03:47:19 +0000 UTCSo, as great a record as it is, is so overexposed. Pretty sure only 2-3 songs will be new to Doug. (Bummer that Melt isn't on the list! The album that made Pete solo a truly unique and exciting thing.)

2024-07-04 03:17:06 +0000 UTCNot on the list but my vote goes to Peter Gabriel III / Melt, my favorite PG album front to back and has some great Robert Fripp guitar work
