POLL: Pick the Next Extended Play Lounge album

Hi y'all! For the next EPL, I'm looking to dip my toe further into the world of electronic music. So, with the help of the Council of Dougs, I've developed this list of five classic albums in this genre. Pick the one you'd most like to hear with me!

Comments

Just a few more votes for tangerine dream???. I think there’s is the more significant offering on this list for understanding the evolution of electronic music so the one I’d like to hear Doug’s reaction to

Chris Gadsby

Such a close race. Maybe Doug should do an EPL Double Feature of TD and JMJ.

Steve Hall

Yes, with the Council membership.

Illume Eltanin

I disagree for the original 45 minute long soundtrack album. I feel the longer score album which was released later definitely needs the images of the film to go along with it. But the original soundtrack release is concise and edited in a way which is an enjoyable musical listen on its own.

Illume Eltanin

If you saw the movie "Risky Business", you already know parts of the track "Force Majeure"- I distinctly remember it in the scene on the train. TD did the soundtrack and recycled some music they already had.

Tom (the soggy one)

Oh no! Tangerine Dream is falling behind! Did you know that Christopher Franke did the music for Babylon 5?

Sasquatch (Dan Giles)

This is a struggle! Of the 2 artists I would like to listen to, Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, the albums chosen are not the ones I would go for (Phaedra and Bladerunner respectively). This is a difficult category as there are many electronic categories that have virtually nothing to do with each other. I went for Tangerine Dream just because they were the earliest and undoubtedly influenced the other electronic music artists (particularly Kraftwerk). For me, the later artists added commercial appeal more than artistic innovation (Laurie Anderson excluded, although I don't view her as in this genre). If JMJ does win, at least it will get us past this landmark dish that so many are hungry for (not to my particular taste, but I don't claim any higher ground).

Adie

Interesting. Was that a discussion that took place on Discord ?

BRIAN MILLER

It's good that somebody is willing to stan for her. I only know of her through her long term collaboration with Jean Michel Jarre, she is featured on several of his albums.

ben-one-eye

Yes, that room is in the recommendations box on Discord. :)

ben-one-eye

Like asking me to choose which arm is my favorite. I'm not gonna vote for the Tangerine Dream one though, since I already have another one of theirs logged in. And I, too, would have gone with either Trans Europe Express or Autobahn. But as it is I think Oxygene is the best choice for a gateway into the wide world of electronic music. Also, Heaven and Hell is more oriented towards classical music as well as combining it with electronics, so depending on what you're looking for to begin with, it might be a good or a bad choice.

ben-one-eye

Also, the music really needs the pictures.

Robert Pugh

Tough choice. Very different styles across these albums. I went with Vangelis, if only for the Jon Anderson tie in - a beautiful track that pretty much kills me every time.

Les Mable

Interestingly, Anderson replaced Philip Glass’ Koyaanisqatsi in a poll option that originally only contained Glass, JMJ, and Vangelis. TD and Kraftwerk were added to fill out the poll. It was pointed out that Koyaanisqatsi is more symphony instruments and choir with a few electronic elements mixed in, but that it really didn’t fit the electronic category of the poll.

Surprised Kraftwerk isn't doing better, though I would have picked Trans-Europe Express. I still voted for The Man-Machine since I believe Kraftwerk would be the best introduction to this type of music. Oxygene is long overdue for a listen, however.

D

Such a hard choice to make Tangerine Dream my favorite but would have preferred Phaedra , Rubycon or Stratosfear. Vangelis Albedo 0.39, Chariots of Fire soundtrack or Blade Runner soundtrack. Kraftwerk autobahn or Kraftwerk I don't know the first artist so in the end had to go with Jean-Michel Jarre as Oxygene .

Terence colin Shortman

Mine too

Robert Pugh

i feel like big science is a little misplaced with the other options. i voted for it and i would looove an epl of big science but it is a bit weird to compare it to for example force majeur.. i also feel like (from what ive heard of these albums) big science is by far the "weirdest" of them in some sense

idun ronja

Vangelis always sounded more accessible/commercial to me than Tangerine Dream. Force Majeure is a great album but Rubycon would be my #1 choice, if only for the ‘whooshhh’ at the end of side 1. TD got my vote.

Frits van Voorst

This is a difficult one. To choose between master Vangelis and Tangerine Dream.... Hm!

Salvador Montoro Goethe

Voted Laurie Anderson, because I really feel that she should be more widely heard/appreciated. That said, I think the album Strange Angels is her best work. But I am also very happy that JMJ is leading right now.

Andrew Elliott

In my view, the first and the last options are "sui generis" - not really electronic music, more performance art/musique concrete (Laurie Anderson) or operatic prog (Vangelis). So that leaves the other 3, all of which should be listened to by Doug. What to do... I'll go with my heart, which says JMJ because that album went to university with me when I left home and I wore it out!

Chris Ramsbottom

I’m also a big fan of TD. My streaming collection counts more than 30 TD albums, incl Force Majeure. Tangerine Dream was founded by Edgar Froese in 1967, Tangerine Dream were formative in the genre of electronic music, with long instrumental tracks based on synthesizer and sequencer sounds, later known as 'Berlin School' and 'Kosmische Musik'. Force Majeure is the ninth studio album by the German group Tangerine Dream, released in 1979. The album developed Tangerine Dream's further evolution toward the more melodic sound they would adopt in the 1980s, with a heavier presence of guitars, drums and distinct musical suites in the tradition of progressive rock, rather than the band's 1970s output of Berlin School.

Karl Stubsjoen

I’m afraid you misspelled Tangerine Dream @Doug (Tangarine) 😉 My vote is for Jean Michelle Jarre. I’ve listened to his music for many years. It all started with “Oxygen”. Looking forward to the vote results 😁👏🏻

Karl Stubsjoen

My favorite by Vangelis is also Albedo 0.39.

Illume Eltanin

It is a very difficult choice between Oxygène and Force Majeure, but I'll give my vote to Tangerine Dream, so you can get to know them better with their very best album. Heaven and Hell is good, but it is not my favorite record from Vangelis. I would prefer China, Charriots of Fire, Spiral, or my favorite, Albedo 0.39. I hope you get to those soon!

Estefanía Sucre

Holy hell... we gotta pick BETWEEN those...??

rodso64

I'm going to go with Tangerine Dream (slightly misspelled, but it's too late to restart the poll). The Vangelis is also good, but I think I'd like to hear the TD just a bit more. And I second the Nomination for Larry Fast, the original synthesist and keyboardist for the first several Peter Gabriel albums, while simultaneously doing several solo albums under his "band name" of Synergy, as well as touring with Nektar and Tony Levin, among others. FYI, Larry got his start when he consulted with Rick Wakeman when Yes was creating Tales from Topographic Oceans.

Great Scott

These are some really great ones, although I'm not familiar with Laurie Anderson - I have heard some great things about her. I voted for Vangelis Heaven & Hell, but TG's Force Majeure is a close second for me, and I would be happy if that won instead.

Ford H. Cotton III

I agree that XTC (especially "Skylarking" or "Oranges and Lemons") is fantastic. However, here Doug has a theme: electronic music.

Allen

Great though it is I'm not absolutely sure "Big Science" qualifies. More performance art/experimental. Oxygene is one I listen to most out of these but I'm not sure there's enough in it to actually talk about, it's fairly repetitive and kind of all on one level so I went with "Heaven and Hell. There's some real "wow" moments in that.

Robert Pugh

C’mon Oxygène! The rest are great, but I think for someone new to the genre, Oxygène is the most accessible. 💖

Illume Eltanin

Interesting, eclectic list. Obviously, my choice is currently bringing up the rear!

Christopher Arters (relative timeworx - Mr.A)

😭 I want an option for "All 5 albums in a row" (just kidding, I don't want to underestimate the amount of work required for an EPL, but each one of these albums is amazing in its own different way, )

Eusebio R-Z

I voted for Laurie Anderson since that is the one I own on CD and am most familiar with.

BRIAN MILLER

Doug, somewhere there has to be room for XTC - English Settlement, there are so many albums that remain un-played but are worthy.

Stop Propaganda

Some very good albums here, but I would add Larry Fast's Synergy "Electronic Realizations For Rock Orchestra Music" to the list.

Bill Coonley

Wow, all of these choices are fantastic. I've been a fan of Vangelis since seeing Chariots of Fire in the theater, and my mother buying the soundtrack.
