POLL: Pick the next EPL

OK y'all. For this EPL, I'm focusing on classic prog musicians and looking to hear and react to a solo album. I've enjoyed this 'mini-series' of solo album reactions from Steve Hackett, Rick Wakeman, & Jon Anderson. And, I want to expand on that. So, here's five choices from our master list. Pick the one you'd most like me to review!

Comments

At some point please listen to Tony Banks' A Curious Feeling as it's arguably his best ever work...and Anthony Phillips TGATG is an amazing album too...I'm convinced you will love it Doug.

Paul Hoyle

I have been pushing for Patrick Moraz for nearly two years, even sending Doug the LP. He had already done Jon Anderson and Chris Squire's solo albums, and I believe "The Story Of I" to be just as worthy!

Bill Coonley

I’ve got what I think is an excellent late Wakeman suggestion for the future - The Red Planet, which came out during lockdown in 2020.

Jack C

To me, the Anthony Phillips album is the best of this list, hands down.

Jean-Michel LaFontaine

I went for the Story of I because it seems to me to be to be the furthest away musically from the original band (probably because PM was in the original band for the shortest period compared to any of the others).

Adie

Curious Feeling is my favourite on this list, but have I missed 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth'? Think you'd enjoy the classical / prog / narration blend.

Richard

I had the David Gilmour album back when it came out. I didn’t even have any Pink Floyd albums back then. I just really was drawn to these tunes. Even though I like the other choices, I’m voting for this one. It’s great.

Pam Norris

I agree somewhat, it's for sure a stupendous mix of styles held together with that "World Music" vibe, but would say it still possesses many of those classic prog rock elements. Unfortunately, not enough people will have ever heard it for it to win a Doug poll.

VW

Not sure why I ever bother to vote in these - I can't remember my pick not being last. it's always the most commercial that wins.... :/

Trevor Cotterell

Opps good catch, that was a typo that I'll correct.

Ron Swirson

Interesting choices there, going for Patrick Moraz, as I believe that is the most "interesting" music...

Ralph Darvill

ELP suggestions? No ELP related on this list.

Guitar Channel

Good choices. I chose Patrick Moraz, but could have chosen any of the others.

Guitar Channel

I only know Face Value from this list so go with what you know.

Duff

The Geese and the Ghost! Please upvote

Jack R.

Come on, these are all good but Doug REALLY needs to hear A Curious Feeling! And my second choice would be The Story of I. Naturally, my two choices don't seem to have a prayer.

Neale Brassell

I own all of these EPL suggestions, and they all offer some good material. But the most consistent album from a song perspective is Face Value. I see Gilmours solo is currently leading. Although it's a good record and I saw him on his "About Face" tour, the album offers very little unexpected material. It's David Gilmour doing what he does, but Phils album showed a variety of unexpected music from him. Thats why I feel Face Value should be the album of choice. I'm pretty certain Doug has only heard In The Air Tonight and none of the others (unless he heard one during his weekend Zoom sessions). I want him to hear Phils jazzed up version of Behind The Lines from Duke and all the other very diverse songs on the album. It's not getting the votes it deserves because many who see it on the list only think of In the Air Tonight, brush it off, and choose something else, which is a shame.

Ron Swirson

I am a huge fan of "The Story of i", and I think it would represent a very different sound from what Doug's been listening to lately. It's more World Music than Prog, but still immensely interesting and never boring.

Eric Warner

Tony Banks is a much overlooked as one of founder of progressive music.

Paul Ehney

FACE VALUE!!!!!

Frankie Cerniglia

Come ooooon Geese & the Ghost! Third time lucky?

Si

Phil poured his heart out in his first solo effort. He was going thru the breakup and I don’t think any other album of his, solo or with Genesis, shows this much emotion in his voice.

David Kingma

I stood in line to buy Face Value when it first was released. I thought it was fantastic. I still do, but that’s also my only Phil Collins album. The follow ups I didn’t much care for, I’m sad to say. Tony Banks album is also really good. Something I first realised years later. I bough that too eventually - on vinyl of course 😉

Karl Stubsjoen

Aaahh! You're killin' me, Doug! Two and a half of these I can't do without; or choose between. Dang it!

Tom (the soggy one)

That Ant Phillips record is great!
